- ShadowClan is heading back to their own territory, and Sunbeam confides in Berryheart about her concern that RiverClan will continue to fight. Berryheart, however, is worried about how it will affect ShadowClan. When she returns to camp, Sunbeam sees Blazefire speaking with Tigerstar, and the leader seems confused. Blazefire congratulates Sunbeam, and as they enter camp, she realizes that Nightheart is there. Nightheart brags to Gullswoop about his love for Sunbeam and wanting to join ShadowClan, and Sunbeam is upset that Nightheart did not speak with her first. She tries to take him aside to speak with him, but is interrupted by Spireclaw and Fringewhisker, who congratulate them.
- Tigerstar approaches the pair and tells Nightheart that he has a right to prove himself to ShadowClan, but will have no rank until then. Once Sunbeam has a moment with him, she confronts Nightheart for failing to address his feelings with her before coming to ShadowClan. He persists for a chance to prove himself, hopeful that they can be friends if she does not take him as a mate, and she agrees. When they go back to camp, Berryheart demands to speak with Sunbeam, while Tawnypelt bonds with Nightheart. Berryheart is furious with Sunbeam, accusing her of betrayal and questioning Nightheart's loyalty, comparing the situation to Berryheart's own betrayal in joining Darktail's Kin. She claims to care about Sunbeam's happiness, but Sunbeam defends Nightheart before leaving her mother, feeling hurt.
