Chapter description[]
- In a dream, Sunbeam is at a Gathering when ThunderClan arrives, led by Squirrelflight. Nightheart passes by Sunbeam and does not respond to her calling his name, and to Sunbeam's horror, he is accompanied by a pretty tabby she-cat, who is seemingly close to him. Sunbeam attempts to attack her, but wakes up in her scrambled nest, watched by Pouncestep. Some time later, she leaves the warriors' den in a daze, remembering the nightmares she had been having of Nightheart. Ignoring her Clanmates' whispers, Sunbeam settles to eat a sparrow, only for Berryheart to join her. Berryheart suggests that Sunbeam can find a ShadowClan mate now that Nightheart has gone, but Sunbeam snaps back that she does not want one, reflecting on how their relationship has declined again.
- Their conversation is disrupted by Lightleap, who invites Sunbeam to eat with her and Blazefire, which she gladly accepts. Unnerved by their silence, she prompts them to speak with her, though she rejects Blazefire's attempt to address her feelings. Instead, Lightleap tells a story about getting back at Blazefire for disrupting hers and others' sleep with his snoring, which helps Sunbeam's mood. Tigerstar then calls a Clan meeting and informs his Clan that RiverClan cats are plotting against them, which Sunbeam believes to be Splashtail's group. Tigerstar reveals his intentions to send more warriors to live with RiverClan, which worries both Sunbeam and Berryheart. Sunbeam, Flaxfoot, Whorlpelt, and Lightleap are chosen to go, to Sunbeam's disappointment, and she worries about what is to come.
