Chapter description[]
- Nightheart returns to camp with the dawn hunting patrol, recalling how Cinderheart and Sorrelstripe had praised his ShadowClan hunting techniques. He takes a mouse and settles with Bayshine and Finchlight, and the three listen in on the discussion amongst the senior warriors, who are arguing over Bramblestar's decision to step down. Bramblestar interrupts the argument, reassuring Thornclaw that he will still be present as an elder, and Nightheart sees how well Bramblestar and Squirrelflight are getting on. Bramblestar says that he and Squirrelflight are going to the Moonpool that night to discuss their decision with StarClan. Stormcloud questions if they will attack ShadowClan, but Bramblestar replies that it is up to Squirrelflight, and Nightheart worries about how he could fight Sunbeam in the event of a battle.
- Just as Lionblaze asks Bramblestar how he will address it with the other Clans, Lilyheart rushes into camp to inform Bramblestar that Sunbeam wishes to speak with Nightheart, and Nightheart spots her at the camp entrance. Bramblestar permits him to see her and Nightheart excitedly leads her out of camp to a glade. Sunbeam explains that she loves him and has decided to join ThunderClan to be with him, flooding Nightheart with joy. He believes Bramblestar will accept her, but warns of the potential for war with ShadowClan now that Squirrelflight may be leader. Sunbeam expresses uncertainty that she could face her birth Clan in battle, and Nightheart fears for the future.
