- Sunbeam, noticing that Nightheart has seemed unsettled, asks if he is sure about joining ShadowClan, and he reassures her. Berryheart suddenly calls a Clan meeting, and she announces that Tigerstar wants her to handle the tasks for cats joining ShadowClan and that they must complete three tasks rather than one. Spireclaw protests that Fringewhisker should not have to, but she agrees to do two more tasks. Nightheart begins to feel nervous about his tasks, but Sunbeam comforts him and takes him out for a tour of the territory. They briefly discuss Finchlight, with Sunbeam suggesting that she may miss Nightheart, silently reflecting on her own growing feelings for him. Sunbeam shows him a bees' nest, and they decide to try to gather honey for Puddleshine. She starts to teach him how to climb trees, but he reminds her that he came from ThunderClan, and Nightheart successfully gathers the honey. Noticing the time, they hurry back to camp to support Fringewhisker with her task.
- As Nightheart takes the honey to Puddleshine, Berryheart explains Fringewhisker's task: a difficult obstacle course. Spireclaw and Lightleap argue against the complicated task, but Fringewhisker is willing to complete it. They head to Fringewhisker's starting point, and she begins the course. Sunbeam and Nightheart watch, impressed, as she swiftly makes her way, guided by Berryheart, until Sunbeam realizes that she must cross the ravine. Berryheart tells Fringewhisker to cross, and Sunbeam sees that she is trying to mislead Fringewhisker. Nightheart points out a tree that reaches the other side, but Sunbeam says that it is infested with snakes. She goes to warn Fringewhisker, but Nightheart stops her, as Berryheart will consider it cheating. Fringewhisker attempts to cross the tree, only to be attacked by a snake, and she barely keeps her balance. She manages to fend off the snake and reaches the other side, and the Clan congratulates her. Nightheart remarks that he could not have known how to cross safely, and Gullswoop agrees, though Yarrowleaf argues with her. Berryheart warns Nightheart that his first task will be the next day, and though he acts confident, Sunbeam worries about Berryheart's plans.
