Chapter description[]

Sunbeam and Nightheart prepare for Nightheart's first trial by analyzing Fringewhisker's trials. Tigerstar calls a Clan meeting, and Nightheart tries to hide his anxiety from Berryheart. Berryheart tells Nightheart to collect enough prey to feed the entire Clan, and, thinking it will be easy, he starts to leave. Berryheart, however, adds that he can only hunt frogs, which he has never done before. Sunbeam starts to help him, but Berryheart interrupts, saying that she will fail him. Nightheart heads for the spot at the lake that Sunbeam had shown him, where he is able to find frogs. Nightheart struggles, however, as his usual hunting techniques do not work, with one frog leaping onto his face before returning to the water when he tries to kill it.
Time has passed, and Nightheart realizes that he needs to be smarter. He settles down to observe the frogs and soon discovers their love for flies, giving him the idea to kill voles to attract flies. He takes the dead voles to a burrow and sets up a trap, leaving a vole at the edge of the concealed burrow. Flies begin to gather, and soon, the frogs start following the trail, until one frog finds the vole Nightheart left at the edge and falls in. Nightheart repeats this process until he gathers enough, and he rushes back to camp to retrieve Tigerstar and Berryheart. He leads them and Sunbeam to his prey, and Tigerstar, amused, points out that the frogs are alive. Nightheart replies that he had been required to catch the frogs, not kill them, and Tigerstar concedes. Berryheart, angered, tells him that she will make sure that his next task is harder.
