Chapter description[]
- RiverClan gathers for a tense Clan meeting, waiting for Tigerstar to arrive. He arrives late, and he begins the meeting by acknowledging Mistpaw and Graypaw's hard work in training, pleasing them. Tigerstar then announces his intent to switch Frostpaw to warrior training, but RiverClan protests against this, believing that a RiverClan leader should handle their ceremonies. Icewing points out that RiverClan is currently without a leader, and Duskfur remarks that, without a connection to StarClan, they will not find one. Frostpaw tries to hide from the conversation, but Splashtail speaks to her, questioning her decision. She expresses certainty, reminding him of their Clan's doubts in her abilities, but Splashtail insists that she should consider it further.
- Havenpelt breaks in, asking if Tigerstar has influenced her decision. Frostpaw insists that she has no connection to StarClan, and Graypaw reminds her that Curlfeather had wanted her to be a medicine cat, which confuses her. Tigerstar begins her warrior apprentice ceremony, choosing Harelight as her mentor, but Duskfur questions Harelight's loyalty, as he had sheltered with ShadowClan as an exile. Harelight reminds her that he had been driven out because of an impostor, and he encourages Frostpaw.
- A few days later, Frostpaw and Harelight are battle training, and she reflects on how she is growing accustomed to it. As she prepares to attack, she sees Duskfur and Splashtail watching her, and they make comments about her training, implying that she is not meant to be a warrior. Harelight orders them to return to their patrol, and when Frostpaw loses confidence in herself, he reassures her that she is doing well. They return to camp, where Frostpaw begins eating with Mistpaw. She tells Mistpaw about her training, and Mistpaw expresses excitement, but Frostpaw notices that there is something going on with her. After some pressing, Mistpaw brings up Curlfeather again, saying that, if Curlfeather had never truly been destined for leadership, then she had not needed to die. This disturbs Frostpaw, who leaves her sister to ponder Curlfeather's death, wondering if it had been her fault.
