Frostpaw is wracked with guilt and regret over her failings to RiverClan, having made not one big mistake, but two mistakes.
She laments that because of RiverClan's weakness, Tigerstar had attacked and taken over, believing his leadership could fix RiverClan.
Frostpaw suffers from flashbacks, remembering her mother, Curlfeather, and how she was attacked and killed by dogs.
Frostpaw believes that her mother would have been a good leader for RiverClan.
Mallownose believes that Owlnose should have been giving orders, and that they should not be listening to another Clan issue orders.
Tigerstar wants to organize hunting patrols, but not many cats are respecting his words.
Splashtail jumps to his paws and wants to know why RiverClan needs to listen to ShadowClan, and why Owlnose is not the cat issuing commands.
He reinforces the idea that Owlnose was chosen by RiverClan, so it should be him in charge, and many RiverClan cats agree.
Tigerstar demands to know why Owlnose is not Owlstar, and asks with an edge to his voice.
Havenpelt and Podlight both question Owlnose, wanting to know where his nine lives are.
Owlnose admits that he did not become leader and did not gain his lives because he does not want to be RiverClan's leader.
He knows that he would be a poor leader, and he has refused the call of StarClan.
Splashtail and Lizardtail are shocked, and want to know why Owlnose never said anything.
Tigerstar implies that they expected Owlnose to lie to RiverClan, just like RiverClan lied at the Gathering.
He mews that RiverClan's dishonest and lack of organization is exactly why he is here.
Many RiverClan cats approach Tigerstar, but are stopped by Harelight, who says they should make themselves useful and hunt, or see Mothwing if they are ill.
Duskfur confronts Owlnose, blaming him and saying that if he had done his duty, they would have a leader and Tigerstar would not be there.
Icewing jumps into the fray, saying that Owlnose did not want to lead and they should not have a leader who knows in his heart that it is the wrong choice.
Icewing says that they should go along with Tigerstar for now, as there may be another chance to fight again and win.
Mothwing tries to distract Frostpaw by giving her tasks to do, saying that Shimmerpelt has a shoulder wound.
Mothwing whispers to Frostpaw that she knows she is hurt by what happened, but the elder medicine cat needs help and Frostpaw is able to provide that.
Cloverfoot is assigned to stay in RiverClan to help, per Tigerstar's orders, and RiverClan is not happy with that.
Icewing says they should have seen this coming, and that Tigerstar was always going to want some of his own cats in RiverClan.
Icewing and Cloverfoot are tasked with sharing Clan leadership duties for the time being.
When Splashtail's role as deputy is questioned, Tigerstar mews that Icewing is older and has more experience.
Icewing approaches Frostpaw and whispers that they need to talk once Tigerstar has left RiverClan's camp.
Sunbeam returns to ShadowClan after the occupation of RiverClan is complete.
She wishes it had not come to a battle, and wanted RiverClan to see they were only there to help.
Berryheart snorts when her daughter expresses concerns for RiverClan's energy after the fight, saying it was their own fault.
Berryheart is also concerned why Tigerstar is involving himself in RiverClan's problems and that he will not have time for ShadowClan.
As they return to camp, Sunbeam is approached by Blazefire, who congratulates her.
Sunbeam is confused and has no idea what Blazefire is talking about, then sees Nightheart standing in the middle of ShadowClan's camp.
She is even more confused, as they had only briefly talked.
Sunbeam thinks that she knew Nightheart liked her, but they had never talked about changing Clans or becoming mates.
Sunbeam wishes Nightheart would have told her before telling all of her Clanmates, noting Gullswoop as a cat who found out before she did.
Sunbeam and Nightheart attempt to have a moment alone, but are interrupted by her Clanmates and by Tigerstar, who says that he needs to follow the duties set forth by ShadowClan.
He not only needs to prove himself to Sunbeam, but to ShadowClan as well, and Nightheart agrees to this.
Sunbeam leads Nightheart out of camp to talk.
Sunbeam agrees to forgive Nightheart, but in exchange, he needs to give Sunbeam the time and space to think about what she wants.
As they return to camp, Berryheart approaches and wants to talk to Sunbeam alone.
Tawnypelt appears as well, saying she wishes to talk to Nightheart, as they are kin as Tawnypelt is Bramblestar's sister and littermate.
Berryheart is worried that the Clans would become like Darktail's Kin again if they allowed outsiders.
Berryheart is angry with Sunbeam as well, and demands to know why her daughter wants to be with a traitor.
Sunbeam defends Nightheart, saying he is not a traitor or an outsider.
She adds that she is not concerned about her own happiness or Spireclaw's, as she is rude to Fringewhisker as well.
Sunbeam mews that Nightheart deserves a fair chance to follow the code and become a ShadowClan cat.
Sunbeam stalks away from her mother, very angry and hurt by having to argue with her.
The brown she-cat is certain that Berryheart is wrong.
Tigerstar is offended and says he is not the first Tigerstar and would not take over.
Leafstar refuses to listen and says that she believes ShadowClan has invaded and taken over RiverClan.
Tigerstar claims they were in chaos and needed help.
Tigerstar explains that Owlnose was chosen as leader, but he did not become leader, and he refused the offer.
Many cats are shocked at this, with an outcry of disbelief echoing throughout the island.
Tigerstar says that he went to RiverClan to help, and they attacked his warriors.
ShadowClan defeated them, and that proves they needed help.
Leafstar looks to Bramblestar for his opinion, and he is thoughtful.
He reminds Tigerstar yet again that the first Tigerstar is kin to both of them and that him taking over RiverClan in the old forest was wrong.
Squirrelflight disagrees with Bramblestar and the others and believes that Tigerstar is going too far.
Harestar is unsure at the moment how to agree or disagree, but stresses that Tigerstar cannot stay in RiverClan for very long.
Leafstar asks RiverClan how they feel about it, and Icewing says while it was not welcome, they have been more comfortable and well-fed.
Icewing admits that RiverClan has not always told the truth, saying that Mistystar died of old age and Reedwhisker was killed.
Squirrelflight insists that another medicine cat needs to help RiverClan, but Tigerstar mews that Puddleshine and Shadowsight will assist if necessary.
The Clans cannot agree on RiverClan, so will not commit to driving ShadowClan out, but they all appear to agree that Tigerstar is not to stay in RiverClan for very long.
Tigerstar is in agreement with this, as he has technically taken on the role of leader for two Clans.
Tigerstar announces that Nightheart has decided to join ShadowClan, in an attempt to distract the other Clans from the problem with RiverClan.
Berryheart speaks up, saying that she finds it too easy to switch Clans.
Many cats agree with her, including Nightheart's littermate, Finchlight, who suggests that it should be three tasks instead of one to join another Clan.
The leaders agree that three tasks sounds reasonable.
Nightheart catches up to Finchlight after the Gathering, wanting to know if she wants Nightheart to come back to ThunderClan.
She says that she does, and Sparkpelt wants him to return as well.
Nightheart does not want to hear any of Finchlight's excuses, and storms off to return to ShadowClan territory.
Frostpaw is stopped by her littermates, Mistpaw and Graypaw, who want to tell her all about their battle training.
Despite Frostpaw's attempts to avoid Icewing, she is unsuccessful, as the white she-cat is with Mistpaw and Graypaw.
Icewing sends Graypaw and Mistpaw to clean up, and she attempts to corner Frostpaw in an attempt to talk to her.
Frostpaw manages to divert Icewing's attempts for the time being, saying she needed to get herbs back to camp.
Icewing is not happy with Frostpaw's excuses, but accepts them for the time being.
Mistpaw later invites Frostpaw to eat with her and Graypaw, saying that Mothwing would not mind.
Graypaw thinks it is weird that RiverClan does not have a leader right now, and that ShadowClan is in their camp.
Mistpaw agrees, and asks Frostpaw if she believes that she had made the wrong choice.
Frostpaw admits that Owlnose was not the right cat, and says that StarClan told her to look beyond the obvious choices.
Frostpaw tries to distract her littermates by asking about their training.
Mistpaw and Graypaw are enthusiastic about battle training and hunting, but not helping take care of the elders.
Frostpaw mews that Curlfeather, their mother, would have been proud of them, and Mistpaw agrees, adding that Curlfeather would have been proud of Frostpaw too.
Graypaw and Mistpaw make an attempt to show Frostpaw a battle move they learned, and encourage Frostpaw to join in.
Frostpaw accidentally messes up the training, but Graypaw assures her that she is doing great for a first try.
Frostpaw soon makes her way to the medicine den, and meets up with Mallownose, who has a wound on his ear.
She assures him that he should not need any more herbs, but tells him to come to her tomorrow if the wound does not feel better.
Frostpaw thinks about Mothwing's lack of a connection with StarClan, and worries that they need StarClan to find a leader for RiverClan.
Frostpaw looks up to see Splashtail limping towards her, one of his wounds opening up and oozing blood.
She frets over him, saying that he is not fine and that he cannot solve all of RiverClan's issues by himself.
Splashtail tries to assure Frostpaw that things will be okay and StarClan will come through, giving her credit for picking an unlikely cat in Owlnose.
Shadowsight, the ShadowClan medicine cat, shows up to talk to Frostpaw.
He asks how things are in RiverClan, and tells Frostpaw this could all be over if she was able to find RiverClan's new leader.
Frostpaw asks Shadowsight how it felt to know the signs from StarClan were not real, referencing Ashfur and how he manipulated Shadowsight.
While a bit stung by her question, he explains that it was painful and he still feels guilty for following Ashfur's words.
Shadowsight does not miss being able to communicate with StarClan, and is not worried about missing his friends or family since he knows he will see them again.
Frostpaw confides in Shadowsight, saying that her Clanmates expect her to contact StarClan whenever she needs to, and that it is not that easy.
Shadowsight says that Frostpaw is more than able to come to him with any other questions, but also adds that Icewing was still looking for her.
Icewing is at the elders' den, helping to reinforce it.
Icewing and Frostpaw go for a walk to talk about everything that has been happening.
Frostpaw admits to Icewing that she might not have real visions from StarClan and that she is not sure she ever did.
She compares her visions to Puddleshine's, saying that he saw StarClan's hunting grounds, whereas she did not.
Icewing believes she and Frostpaw should discuss things with Mothwing.
Mothwing is not happy that Frostpaw talked to Icewing.
She worries what Tigerstar would do once he finds out RiverClan has no connection to StarClan.
They all agree to sleep on it, but know they will need to talk to Tigerstar soon enough.
The following day, they talk to Tigerstar, who is very unhappy that RiverClan has lied to him again.
Tigerstar suggests training Frostpaw as a warrior apprentice until another cat has a real vision from StarClan, and Frostpaw is relieved that she does not have to worry about RiverClan's leadership problems.
