In the A Vision of Shadows arc[]

River of Fire[]

Shadowkit is one of Dovewing's and Tigerheart's kits, and he first appears, although unnamed, by Violetshine when she sees Dovewing in the group of ShadowClan cats. Dovewing reveals his name, along with his sisters to Alderheart.
When discussing Tigerheart's death, Shadowkit speaks up, saying that his father is not dead. Violetshine thinks to herself that the gray tom was too young to understand, but he continues, saying that he had a dream where he was playing with Tigerheart, and he knew that it was a true dream. Dovewing strokes her tail down her son's side, and Violetshine notices he has dark stripes, just like his father. Violetshine asks why he thinks that, and Shadowkit replies that he just does. Shadowkit goes on to say that he had a dream of being in the former ShadowClan camp, and he was playing moss-ball with Lightkit, Pouncekit, and Tigerheart. Berryheart speaks up, saying that the kit had never been the former camp, causing Violetshine to wonder if Shadowkit had received a vision.
He appears, although unnamed, when his father returns as Tigerstar. Shadowkit goes with his mother to ThunderClan on her last visit there. Then Dovewing returns to ThunderClan, and he is introduced to his grandparents, Whitewing and Birchfall. Soon after, he meets his aunt, Ivypool and her kits. He later is seen going back to ShadowClan with his mother, and the cats who are ordered to accompany them, his grandparents and Fernsong.

The Raging Storm[]

Alderheart stays with ShadowClan for a short time to treat Puddleshine's infection. During his time there, Yarrowleaf bursts into the medicine den, saying Alderheart needs to see Shadowkit. Alderheart races into the nursery, and finds Shadowkit in his nest, having a seizure. The medicine cat, Tigerstar, and Dovewing hold him still until it passes. Alderheart asks if he's been ill, and Tigerstar tells him he's had these fits before. Dovewing explains that on their way back to the lake, Shadowkit had visions that came with seizures like this, and they had thought it was getting better, but if anything they're worse. Once his spasms pass, Alderheart gives Dovewing some thyme for Shadowkit when he wakes.
Shadowkit pushes himself up weakly and announces he's had another vision. Tigerstar tries sending Alderheart away so Shadowkit can tell his parents the vision alone, but the kit wants him to stay, thinking that since he's a medicine cat, he might know what it means. Shadowkit explains it was raining on RiverClan's land, and it kept getting heavier and worse until he could feel water pressing all around him, and he couldn't breathe. He pauses, and Dovewing wraps her tail around him with a sob as he says everything went black. Finished, Shadowkit looks at Alderheart, wondering what is means. Alderheart shifts his paws uneasily, thinking the vision means Shadowkit is going to drown, but suggests it might just have been a nightmare.
Alderheart leaves the den to fetch poppy seeds and is confronted by Tigerstar, asking if Shadowkit's going to drown like Flametail. Alderheart says he can't predict the future, but he did see something dark, something that needs to be avoided.
Shadowkit begins helping Alderheart with medicine cat duties, and often makes the nests neat, fetches herbs, and chases spiders out of the den without being told to. His sisters plead for him to come out and play, but Shadowkit declines, stating he's having fun in the medicine den and he still has a lot to learn, planning on becoming a medicine cat one day. As the two kits leave, Alderheart asks him if he's sure he doesn't want to go out and play, and Shadowkit firmly mews he wants to stay in the medicine den. Alderheart then tells him to fetch marigold for Grassheart's wound. He appears a moment later with the herb and takes the stems to Grassheart, and excitedly exclaims she's waking up. Afterwords, he sends Shadowkit to gather water for Puddleshine and Grassheart.
Shadowkit reappears with water-soaked moss, and asks excitedly if he can go with Alderheart to the Moonpool. Alderheart shakes his head, saying it's only for medicine cats, they're going to share with StarClan. Shadowkit lifts his muzzle, stating he can share too, he has visions. Tigerstar's eyes darken with worry and he tells Shadowkit he needs to stay in camp to look after the sick cats while Alderheart is away. Shadowkit's ears prick, clearly excited to be in charge of the whole den, and promises Alderheart their patients will get the best care while he's gone.
Puddleshine's infection heals and Alderheart is ready to return to ThunderClan. Shadowkit hurries from the nursery, and is disappointed to see Alderheart is leaving. The medicine cat tells him that he can help Puddleshine. Shadowkit looks crestfallen, saying he liked helping him. Dovewing scoops her son close, saying Alderheart's Clan needs him. Shadowkit wonders what will happen if he has another vision, and as Alderheart heads for the entrance, he warns Shadowkit to be careful and stay in camp; visions are sent to guide them.
Later, Alderheart comes back to ShadowClan to talk with Tigerstar, just as another of Shadowkit's seizures have passed. He stirs and weakly tries to purr as he sees Dovewing. Shadowkit calls out to Alderheart, happy to see him, and states it was the same vision as before. Tigerstar tries telling him it was just a dream, but Shadowkit argues. Alderheart changes the subject, asking if he's been helping Puddleshine. Shadowkit lifts his chin, telling him all the things he's done to help. He says Cloverfoot has been helping a lot, but Juniperclaw hasn't come back. Alderheart asks if Juniperclaw helped before, and Shadowkit tells him he came into the den once when he wasn't around, digging around the area Alderheart had been putting the deathberry seeds, and when questioned, Juniperclaw claimed he was getting rid of the seeds so no one would get hurt.
Alderheart and Bramblestar arrive at ShadowClan to confront Tigerstar about Juniperclaw. While there, Alderheart asks how Shadowkit is doing, and Tigerstar says he's still having the same vision. During the demotion of Juniperclaw, Shadowkit goes missing, and his sisters say he said he was playing a game, pretending to go on a secret mission. His parents are frantic that the vision will come true and Shadowkit will drown. The cats begin searching for him, spreading word to WindClan and RiverClan.
Violetshine is swept into the river by RiverClan's territory, and is clinging to the root of a tree. She is surprised as she spots Shadowkit's head bobbing on the surface of the water. She is about to let go of the root to go after him, but Juniperclaw leaps into the water and rescues him before she can. He struggles over to the root and pushes Shadowkit onto it. Finleap reaches down and pulls the kit up onto the bank.
After Violetshine makes it onto the bank, Shadowkit fluffs out his pelt, triumphantly yowling he did what his vision told him to do and brought the Clans together. Violetshine asks what his vision told him to do, and his eyes shine excitedly as he says he had to drown to make the Clans help each other. Violetshine wonders if he has bees in his brain for throwing himself in on purpose, and Shadowkit looks proudly around the cats, pointing out it worked. Violetshine believes the kit has been touched by StarClan and pulls him close, looking up to the sky.

In The Broken Code[]

Lost Stars[]

"There is no cat like you in all the five Clans, Shadowpaw. Now great events are coming, and the Clans will experience far-reaching changes. And you, young apprentice—you will have an important part to play."
―Unidentified StarClan spirit Lost Stars, page 2
An unidentified StarClan warrior watches Puddleshine and Shadowpaw travel to the Moonpool in the thick snow. The warrior reflects out loud how Shadowpaw will have an important upcoming role to play and his name would be remembered for seasons to come.
Before his trip to the Moonpool, Shadowpaw grumbles how his parents still fret over him like a kit despite his age. At the half-moon meeting, the Moonpool is covered with a thin sheet of ice and the medicine cats are unable to communicate with StarClan. The next day, Shadowpaw wonders if his unorthodox visions were to blame. He notes how he receives his visions in an unusual method and believes StarClan must be angry with him. Puddleshine believes the ice is to blame, and Shadowpaw feels somewhat reassured. While playing with Lightleap and Pouncestep, Shadowpaw receives another vision. He sees his father and Bramblestar fighting among the flames.
During the next half-moon meeting, the medicine cats are still unable to reach StarClan. Mothwing believes they shouldn't panic, though the rest are inclined to disagree. The meeting draws short, and Shadowpaw continues to believe it's his fault. That night, a strange voice echoes in his head and urges him to go to the Moonpool alone. There, he is struck by lightning and is warned about a darkness in the Clans that must be driven out. Believing his message to be their only sign from StarClan, Tigerstar announces Shadowpaw's message at the Gathering. The other Clans are doubtful why StarClan would communicate with a ShadowClan apprentice. Shadowpaw is disheveled, and detects something off about Bramblestar.
At the next half-moon meeting, the medicine cats decide that StarClan's silence is caused by something more than the ice. While the others are arguing, Shadowpaw detects something trying to reach them, and Jayfeather snaps why StarClan would communicate with ShadowClan. Shadowpaw sees images of Twigbranch, Lionblaze, Crowfeather, Squirrelflight, Mothwing, Jayfeather, Tree, and Dovewing as a voice warns him the codebreakers must be punished. Shadowpaw confronts his father about his vision and his mother, and Tigerstar reveals Dovewing left ThunderClan to join ShadowClan so they could all be together. His father makes him promise to not tell any cat about his vision.
Shadowpaw decides to visit the Moonpool by himself. While traveling along SkyClan territory, he runs into Rootpaw. He admits to the SkyClan apprentice his worries, and Rootpaw is relieved to find someone else who struggles to fit in. Rootpaw escorts Shadowpaw along SkyClan territory, and after Shadowpaw successfully treats Rootpaw's injured paw, notes how he'll become a great medicine cat.
At the Moonpool, Shadowpaw is confronted by a mysterious male voice. The voice is determined the codebreakers should be punished, but Shadowpaw insists they are good cats. The voice forewarns Bramblestar falling ill and explains to Shadowpaw what he must do to cure him. Shadowpaw is frightened by the unconventional method, and confides his father. Tigerstar and Shadowpaw visit ThunderClan with the cure. Shadowpaw relates Bramblestar's sickness to a fire; if he were to cool down, the sickness would be snuffed out. Jayfeather and Squirrelflight adamantly disagree with potentially freezing their leader to death, and upon learning ShadowClan was not included in the Clans' attempts to break the ice because of Shadowpaw, Tigerstar and his son leave ThunderClan furiously.
He receives another vision of the Clans engulfed in viscous flames, and Tigerstar calls an emergency Gathering. With confirmation of Bramblestar's sickness, the other Clans are inclined to listen to Shadowpaw's messages and Squirrelflight asks for Shadowpaw's help to aid Bramblestar. He guides Alderheart and Jayfeather to carry Bramblestar to a secluded place on the moor and warns Bramblestar would get worse before he got better. However, during the night, Bramblestar dies and does not come back. Tigerstar ushers his family away before things got worse.
Shadowpaw frets about accidentally killing Bramblestar and how foolish he was to listen to a strange cat's word. However, Lionblaze and Fernsong visit ShadowClan with the fabulous news that Bramblestar is alive. They thank Shadowpaw for curing him, and Shadowpaw's Clanmates gratuitously celebrate Shadowpaw. Tigerstar warns his son about telling the other Clans about the codebreakers yet. At the emergency Gathering, the Clans half celebrate while the other half continues to question ShadowClan and Shadowpaw. Bramblestar acknowledges Shadowpaw as their sole connection to StarClan and urgently wishes to figure out how to please StarClan, including suggesting punishing those who had broken the warrior code much to Shadowpaw's displeasure.

The Silent Thaw[]

"He'd gone to the Moonpool to find clarity. And he had, but not in the way he'd expected. Certainty sat like a rock in his belly. The voice, which had told him to cure Bramblestar by letting him die and had shown him the codebreakers, belonged to a spirit that knew the Clans. But he knew now, with a sureness that filled him with horror, that the voice had never been the voice of StarClan."
―Shadowsight's thoughts when he learns of the truth The Silent Thaw, page 217
Shadowpaw is prepared to earns his full medicine cat name and worries he hasn't learned enough. His parents and mentor encourage him he has brought faith back to ShadowClan with his visions. The Moonpool has begun to thaw, and the medicine cats are eager to finally share with StarClan. Shadowpaw is named Shadowsight in honor of Spiresight. However, StarClan is silent and Shadowsight fears it might be his fault.
He begins to search for signs from StarClan and asks Tigerstar to share with the Clans his previous vision of the codebreakers, but he refuses to put Dovewing in danger. Snowbird breaks her leg while on patrol and a falling branch injures Dovewing, Stonewing, Scorchfur and Antfur. The severity of his Clanmates' injuries inclines Shadowsight to believe they are warnings from StarClan about his vision. Despite Shadowsight's hesitance, Antfur decides to return to patrols but dies falling from a tree. His Clanmate's death encourages the young medicine cat to share the truth with the others.
Before the medicine cats can share with StarClan, Shadowsight reveals that he thinks he knows why StarClan refuses to speak with them. He explains his vision of the codebreakers, and believes Bramblestar is right that the Clans are suffering because of them. The medicine cats argue, and they agree to inform their leaders. Shadowsight tells his father who snaps at Shadowsight for putting Dovewing in danger. However, Dovewing stands up for their son for telling the truth and agrees to atone.
Bramblestar uses Shadowsight's vision to punish the codebreakers, including banishing Lionblaze for breaking the warrior code. Shadowsight begins to doubt sharing his vision as StarClan still hasn't spoken. Dovewing commends him for telling the truth, and Shadowsight treats Pouncestep's injury from when she fell out of a tree. After, Puddleshine confronts Shadowsight about the origin of his vision. He goes to the Moonpool and, after recognizing StarClan's permanent silence, realizes none of his visions came from StarClan at all.
Several warriors from the other Clans meet in secret to discuss Bramblestar's odd behavior. Frecklewish suggests they should speak to Shadowsight since he's the one with the only connection to StarClan. Cloverfoot wonders if he made a mistake with his visions. Shadowsight returns to camp and discovers Dovewing had left for her atonement. He explains to his father that his visions may not have come from StarClan, and two run off to search for Dovewing. On their journey, Shadowsight chastises himself for being too foolish but his father praises him for admitting his mistakes.
At a Gathering, Frecklewish attempts to speak with Shadowsight, but he brushes them off. Shadowsight mentions that his visions might not come from StarClan, but Bramblestar dismisses him as an inexperienced apprentice. Back in camp, he treats Yarrowleaf's bee sting. He notes it to be another unusual injury, since it was early in the season for bees. He challenges Puddleshine's belief that Shadowsight is meant to be a medicine cat, but Tree and Rootpaw arrive in camp with news. Tigerstar hastily sends them away, but Shadowsight catches up with them.
The father and son inform Shadowsight about Bramblestar's impostor and reveal the real Bramblestar's ghost to him. Shadowsight brings them back to camp were they discover Squirrelflight asking for sanctuary. Tree and Squirrelflight reveal the truth to ShadowClan, and Shadowsight supplements that he is unaware who gave him the visions, including instructions how to save Bramblestar from his illness. Shadowsight believes the impostor tricked him into killing Bramblestar so he could steal his body.
Shadowsight manages to convince his father to inform the other medicine cats about the impostor. Before they leave, Tigerstar, Dovewing and Squirrelflight attempt to convince Shadowsight to stay in camp, citing bad feelings. Shadowsight insists he's not traveling alone. However, while on their way past ThunderClan territory, Shadowsight is separated from the others and attacked.

Veil of Shadows[]

"I want to stay alive! I'm sorry. I'm grateful to you for guiding me through this, but there's still so much I have to do, and I need to be alive to do it."
―Shadowsight to Spiresight Veil of Shadows, page 93
An unknown tom brutally attacks Shadowsight and throws his unresponsive corpse down a ravine, leaving him for dead. Spiresight, now a ghost, witnesses this in horror, but is unable to stop the attacker. Rootpaw, Tree, and the other medicine cats wait for Puddleshine and Shadowsight to appear at the Moonpool. Puddleshine arrives but is surprised not to see Shadowsight with them. The group decides to look for Shadowsight but loses track of his scent among crushed catmint. In ThunderClan's camp, Bristlefrost spots the impostor and Berrynose arrive into camp, blood soaking the impostor's chest fur.
The next day, the impostor calls a Clan meeting and announces Shadowsight has disappeared. At the emergency Gathering, Tigerstar pleads for any cat to step forward about Shadowsight's disappearance and suspects something terrible had happened to his son. However, the impostor urges Tigerstar to cease looking for Shadowsight; since there was no evidence of an attack, the impostor concludes Shadowsight must have fled the Clans due to his mother, Dovewing, being a codebreaker. The impostor uses Shadowsight's disappearance to convince Mistystar and Harestar to banish Crowfeather and Mothwing. At a secret meeting of the exiled cats and rebels in SkyClan's old camp, Bristlefrost and Rootpaw reveal the truth about Bramblestar, and the former adds that she saw blood on the impostor's fur the night Shadowsight disappeared. Tigerstar and several of the rebels are convinced the impostor murdered Shadowsight, though the group is divided how to proceed.
Shadowsight wakes up in a dreamless haze as a ghost and is greeted by Spiresight, his old friend. Spiresight warns Shadowsight that he is hovering between life and death as his body is gravely injured. Shadowsight attempts to communicate to Tree and Rootpaw at the secret meeting, but Spiresight urges his friend not to leave his body for too long. Shadowsight's body develops an infection, and Spiresight, who is cautious about which cats to trust, leaves to find Rootpaw. Spiresight leads Rootpaw to Shadowsight's body, and Rootpaw is relieved that his friend is still alive. Together with Dewspring, they lift Shadowsight's body out of the ravine and take him to SkyClan's camp.
At the rebels' meeting, Tigerstar happily announces that Shadowsight is alive. However, Shadowsight still remains unconscious and his spirit wanders into ThunderClan's camp to spy on the impostor. Shadowsight is surprised the impostor can see him and he confronts Shadowsight in the leader's den. The impostor confesses he attempted to murder Shadowsight, and his spirit ebbs from Bramblestar's body to reveal himself. Shadowsight demands to know what the impostor did to Bramblestar, whose spirit had vanished. The impostor threatens Shadowsight not to meddle any further or he'll face the same fate as Bramblestar. Shadowsight realizes the menacing spirit was the same voice guiding him all along, before suddenly returning to his body.
Shadowsight regains consciousness and reveals the impostor's confession. Shadowsight believes the impostor did something to Bramblestar's spirit and has Rootspring, who gained his warrior name due to his bravery rescuing Shadowsight, attempt to summon the spirit. Rootspring fails and it only solidifies Shadowsight's theory. Shadowsight returns to ShadowClan's camp, and his Clanmates joyfully welcome him home. Puddleshine apologizes for failing his former apprentice. Tigerstar warns an impending battle against the impostor and believes they must kill him. Shadowsight insists they cannot kill Bramblestar's body until he had discovered the truth about Bramblestar's missing ghost.
At another meeting of the rebels, Shadowsight experiences a vision he had before of flames dividing the Clans. That night, Shadowsight has a dream of Bramblestar's ghost calling for help and realizes the spirit is trapped at the Moonpool. Shadowsight consumes deathberries to bring himself close to death to enter the spirit realm. He enters through the Moonpool and finds himself in the empty Dark Forest. He discovers a thick bramble bush covering a pool full of stars and wonders if it was keeping StarClan away. Shadowsight finds Bramblestar's spirit trapped in a tree and frees him. Before the spirit can explain what happened, Shadowsight returns to his body as Puddleshine forces him to eat yarrow. Despite Tigerstar's and Puddleshine's concerns, Shadowsight reassures them that he as discovered the truth.
Following the devastating battle between the Clans, Tigerstar defeats the impostor in battle but spares him. He orders Shadowsight to take care of the impostor's wounds as Squirrelflight wants him alive. While Shadowsight is able to treat his wounds, he fears the impostor might die. As ThunderClan reorganizes its leadership and the other Clans carry their dead away, Shadowsight wonders if the worst is over. However, the impostor, still weakened, threatens Shadowsight that his plans are only beginning.

Darkness Within[]

Bramblestar's impostor.Template "I won't be thwarted. You saved my life, and because of that, you have ensured my success. Because once I'm back to full health, I'll be able to bend any cat to my will..."

The following content contains major spoilers for the true identity of Bramblestar's impostor. Please proceed at your own discretion.

"All the moons he'd spent thinking he was special...But he wasn't special. He was just young and stupid. Tigerstar and Dovewing had been wrong. Or they'd just been humoring him. He had never been special. He was a mouse-brain who thought he was special. How had he not realize he was being used?"
―Shadowsight's thoughts about Ashfur tricking him Darkness Within, page 93
Following Squirrelflight's revelation that the impostor is Ashfur, Squirrelflight comes up with a plan to trick him into revealing his identity himself. Shadowsight monitor's ShadowClan's camp, where the impostor is being held prisoner, and notices his Clanmates' nervousness in preparation for the plan. He checks in on his parents and overhears them worrying about Squirrelflight's idea. Shadowsight asks about Ashfur's description, and Tigerstar replies he was a gray tom with blue eyes. Shadowsight confirms he saw Ashfur's spirit leave Bramblestar's body while he was a spirit. While sorting through herbs, Cloverfoot's patrol returns with news that the other Clans are attacking. Tigerstar rallies up all of his warriors to battle, leaving the camp nearly deserted. Shadowsight keeps an eye on the impostor while Squirrelflight sneaks in and tricks him into revealing he's Ashfur. Ashfur mocks how he tricked Shadowsight into believing he was special and that letting Bramblestar freeze to death would save him, and Shadowsight fears that Ashfur turned him into a traitor and a murderer. When Ashfur reveals he attempted to kill Shadowsight, Tigerstar leaps from the camp entrance to attack him. After the other leaders and deputies secure Ashfur, they agree to keep him prisoner with each Clan sending two of their strongest warriors to guard him. The Clan leaders argue whether or not to kill Ashfur, but Shadowsight knows he doesn't need a body to exist.
Shadowsight grows frustrated with Mothwing, who is now one of ShadowClan's medicine cats, for overstepping in the den. She chides Shadowsight for not letting the herbs properly dry before storing them, though Shadowsight argues that their territory is dryer so they won't rot in the first place. When Scorchfur injures his paw, Mothwing and Shadowsight disagree with how to treat him, and Cloverfoot orders them to report to Tigerstar's den. To his surprise, Mothwing explains how she believes Shadowsight was appointed a full medicine cat too early and shouldn't be treating patients unsupervised. She questions his position since he was only named a full medicine cat for healing Bramblestar, but that turned out to be a ruse. While Puddleshine partially defends his apprentice and Tigerstar insists he's not being blamed, all three of them agree Shadowsight will be demoted to a medicine cat apprentice for a bit more training. Shadowsight is utterly embarrassed, but is given permission to solely treat Ashfur, though he suspect it's because no one will worry if he accidentally kills him. Ashfur toys with Shadowsight, musing if the others will think they're friends and that they are similar. He compliments that there is something special about Shadowsight, and despite him knowing Ashfur is liar, Shadowsight indulges in Ashfur's praise.
At the emergency Gathering, the Clan leaders discuss what to do with Ashfur. Squirrelflight mentions how Shadowsight had seen Bramblestar's spirit in the Dark Forest, but notices the ShadowClan medicine cat missing from his usual spot with the others. Tigerstar explains that Shadowsight is taking time to progress his training, though Squirrelflight wonders if he's being punished instead. At camp, Shadowsight laments his previous closeness with his mentor. Shadowsight gathers his herbs to treat Ashfur, but notices Mothwing prepared him a bundle instead of letting him into the herb storage unsupervised. Frustrated, Shadowsight leaves to treat Ashfur and ignores his attempts to make conversation. Ashfur taunts what Shadowsight will do once he's gone since his Clanmates don't trust him anymore, and even Sedgewhisker and Breezepelt echo this sentiment.
Feeling lost, Lightleap offers for him to hunt with her, Blazefire, Hollowspring and Gullswoop. He is impressed with Hollowspring and Blazefire's teamwork to catch a rabbit, and Lightleap teaches him how to scent prey. However, while his Clanmates stalk some sparrows, Shadowsight is frightened by a bee. While Gullswoop and Blazefire find it amusing, Hollowspring criticizes Shadowsight, but doesn't say anything else since he's Tigerstar's kin. Shadowsight continues to join in on hunting patrols, though he feel bad for never catching anything. He is concerned when Cherryfall tells him that Ashfur has been sleeping all day, though Ashfur wakes up when Shadowsight arrives to treat his wounds. He questions why Shadowsight pretends to be a warrior and is remorseful that he ruined Shadowsight's reputation. Shadowsight wonders if the only reason he's allowed in ShadowClan is because he's Tigerstar's son and leaves Ashfur's prison.
At the half-moon meeting, Shadowsight is uneasy returning to the place he nearly died at. To no cat's surprise, they still don't hear anything from StarClan. The medicine cats argue if StarClan is truly gone and wonder if Ashfur can restore the connection. Shadowsight shares that he saw a barrier blocking StarClan in the Dark Forest while he was a ghost, including the Moonpool. Kestrelflight and Mothwing believes that sounds like nonsense. Shadowsight tries to explain that he also saw Ashfur's spirit leave Bramblestar's body, but grows frustrated when the others also don't believe that. They move on to share news about their Clans, and Shadowsight is surprised to hear that Stonewing had whitecough, something his mentor did not tell him. Kestrelflight reveals he's been thinking about taking Whistlepaw as his apprentice, though the others wonder if that's a good idea without StarClan's approval. Shadowsight grows wearisome of the constant arguing, and wonders if that will be the future of the Clans without StarClan.
When Shadowsight spots only one ThunderClan warrior, Thriftear, guarding Ashfur's den, he goes to investigate and discovers Lionblaze viciously attacking Ashfur. Ashfur taunts Lionblaze who threatens to kill him, but Shadowsight stops him since they won't be able to get Bramblestar back otherwise and Ashfur might be their only hope for StarClan's return. Ashfur thanks Shadowsight for saving his life, but Shadowsight insisted he saved Bramblestar instead. Tigerstar sharply chastises Lionblaze, who his acting deputy, for his behavior and sends him and Thriftear home. Shadowsight begs his father that he can't take care of Ashfur anymore, but Tigerstar insists he can only trust Shadowsight. He returns to Ashfur's prison to heal his wounds, and Ashfur insists Shadowsight must help him escape or else they'll kill him.
Shadowsight watches over Ashfur as he sleeps when Alderheart, Frecklewish and Hawkwing bring urgent news to Tigerstar. Tigerstar enters the prison and reveals that the Sisters held a ceremony to try to summon Bramblestar's ghost. Instead, the spirits of their fallen Clanmates appeared in agony and scared with Ashfur's spirit watching in satisfaction. Shadowsight notes Ashfur has been asleep for a while, but realizes his body is oddly still. Tigerstar sharply wakes him up and he is interrogated. Ashfur questions the validity of what Rootspring, Tree and the Sisters have seen since they are outsiders, and Hawkwing attacks him. Tigerstar joins in on the brawl, and Ashfur refuses to defend himself, letting Bramblestar's body be battered like prey. Shadowsight puts himself in front of Ashfur, insisting he is a medicine and was instructed to heal Ashfur. Tigerstar relents, and Shadowsight begins treating Ashfur's injuries. He presses that he doesn't need Bramblestar's body to stay alive and only Shadowsight can save Bramblestar now.
While waiting for Puddleshine to fetch him herbs, Yarrowleaf remarks Shadowsight should've let Tigerstar and Hawkwing kill Ashfur since they'd all be safer otherwise, but Shadowsight insists it's his duty as a medicine cat to save Bramblestar's body. While on his way to Ashfur's den, he overhears Squirrelflight asking for Tigerstar's opinion on what they should do next. Tigerstar and Lionblaze wish to kill Ashfur, but Squirrelflight insists the leaders should decide together and they agree to a meeting that night. The leaders decide to kill Ashfur, much to Squirrelflight's dismay, and the Clan leaders agree to kill him in his prison.
At ShadowClan's camp, Ashfur detects they're coming for him and Shadowsight is conflicted about preserving Bramblestar's body. Shadowsight insists Bramblestar must be dead, but Ashfur questions that statement as he morphs Spiresight's spirit into Bramblestar's body. Spiresight urges Shadowsight to listen to Ashfur before Ashfur shoves him out. He warns Shadowsight of his power over spirits and suddenly turns into Bramblestar. Bramblestar explains he's still alive and Ashfur still needs him, but he will die without his body. Shadowsight is confused whether or not to listen to Ashfur's tricks when the Clan leaders and their warriors arrive in camp. Lionblaze enters the prison and demands Shadowsight to leave, but Tigerstar calls him outside. Ashfur asks Shadowsight if he knows what to do and once more threatens that Bramblestar will die if he's killed. Shadowsight leaves the prison and gains every cat's attention. As he struggles for what to say, he notices Ashfur slip away from camp. However, it's too late as Ashfur escapes, and Lionblaze angrily confronts Shadowsight for what he's done.

The Place of No Stars[]

"Ashfur had had plenty of opportunities to kill him already. Whatever the evil cat had in store for Shadowsight, it would be much more complicated than a quick death."
―Shadowsight about entering the Dark Forest The Place of No Stars, page 113
Tigerstar and Dovewing stay close to Shadowsight in the leader's den as his Clanmates a few warriors from the other Clans guard outside. Shadowsight tries to explain again that he let Ashfur leave to save Bramblestar's body, but his parents suggest sending him to the Tribe of Rushing Water before the Clan leaders arrive to question him, fearing harsh retribution. However, Shadowsight is determined to make things right and stay with the Clans, but as Tawnypelt prepares to sneak out of camp, Lionblaze, Mistystar, and Harestar arrive to stop them. To prevent bloodshed, Shadowsight agrees to stay in Ashfur's former prison until Leafstar and SkyClan arrive. When Leafstar and her cats arrive, Lionblaze and Tigerstar are prepared to fight until Rootspring reveals the truth—Ashfur had kidnapped Squirrelflight into the Moonpool. While the Clan cats debate on the validity of Rootspring's claims, Lionblaze questions if Shadowsight has more to answer to now, since Ashfur's escape led to the disappearance of their acting leader. Rootspring and Tigerstar defend Shadowsight, and the leaders agree to meet at the Moonpool with their medicine cats to search for clues.
Shadowsight and the other medicine cats fail to communicate with StarClan, and Mistystar's, Mothwing's, and Willowshine's attempts to swim through the Moonpool also result in nothing. As Frecklewish suggests that only a dead cat can lead a living cat to the Dark Forest, Shadowsight surmises that he must enter the Place of No Stars since he's been there before and knows Ashfur better than any cat. Jayfeather and the other cats firmly disagree, with the older cats warning that the Dark Forest can change a good cat into a bad one. Lionblaze and others disagree since they do not trust Shadowsight, while Cloverfoot and others agree with Shadowsight since he is experienced. However, they decide to send Willowshine instead since she's not related to Squirrelflight, despite Shadowsight's insistence that he should do it. However, Willowshine's spirit is killed in the Dark Forest despite the medicine cats' attempts to revive her. Shadowsight is determined not to let any other cat enter the Dark Forest, but Rootspring convinces him to wait until they come up with a better plan.
In ThunderClan, Lionblaze forces Bristlefrost to reveal that it was Shadowsight's plan to enter the Dark Forest and lets it slip that he planned to kill Shadowsight. In ShadowClan, Shadowsight gathers herbs not far from camp, and his parents are pleased to see him out and about, but their son scornfully replies that he's constantly within Mothwing's and Puddleshine's line of sight. Later, as Shadowsight helps Icewing with a bone stuck between her teeth, Icewing warns him to be careful of the Dark Forest, as her son Beetlewhisker, perished there. That night, Shadowsight manages to briefly dream himself into the Dark Forest by focusing on Ashfur. He quickly informs his parents and his mentors about his discovery, but Tigerstar forbids him from seriously attempting such a dangerous act. However, Shadowsight manages to convince Mothwing to take him to the Moonpool so he can gain more focus. Shadowsight is surprised yet grateful that his harshest critic believes in him, and Mothwing warns him to avoid contact with any spirits.
At the Moonpool, Shadowsight manages to dream into the Dark Forest on his second try, and follows the sounds of a yowling cat. He meets Snowtuft, a Dark Forest cat, who informs Shadowsight of a strange StarClan cat arriving. His arrival also coincided with a mysterious fog arriving at all edges of the Place of No Stars, resulting in the land disappearing and cats vanishing. Snowtuft shows Shadowsight the thick gray fog and asks for Shadowsight's help to save his home. Shadowsight agrees, providing he can find Squirrelflight and Bramblestar. Snowtuft leads Shadowsight to Ashfur and Squirrelflight, the two cats aggressively circling each other and arguing. They follow the pair to a island in the middle of a dark lake, where Ashfur reveals the missing spirits of the fallen Clan cats imprisoned under his mind control, and Shadowsight recognizes Spiresight, Conefoot, Rosepetal, Stemleaf, among others trapped. Ashfur has Bramblestar's possessed spirit attack Squirrelflight. Shadowsight feels the Dark Forest changing his thoughts into anger and hopelessness, but he snaps out of it and attempts to attack Ashfur. The dark warrior catches him, and Squirrelflight manages to escape. Bramblestar attempts to follow after her, now free from Ashfur's possession, but Shadowsight manages to leap on Ashfur's back to distract the dark warrior enough for Bramblestar to slip away. Ashfur pummels Shadowsight in his rage, throwing him into the dark water, biting down on his hind leg and slashing his ear. As Ashfur angrily calls for Bramblestar to return, Shadowsight passes out and wakes up besides the Moonpool with a scream.
Mothwing treats Shadowsight's wounds, and Bristlefrost reveals she went in to try to find Rootspring who had been dragged into the Moonpool earlier. Shadowsight explains how he fought Ashfur and gave Squirrelflight and Bramblestar a chance to escape his clutches, and is determined to go back. He suspects Ashfur is planning to take over StarClan and the living world with his controlled spirits. Tigerstar arrives and wishes for his son to return home, but Shadowsight wishes to stay. As they wait, Bristlefrost speaks to Shadowsight about entering the Dark Forest, but the ShadowClan medicine cat is cautious since he could feel how the dark place was changing him, recalling how the older cats warned the Dark Forest can change a good cat into a bad cat. The Clan cats, except Tigerstar, agree to fetch the Sisters to see if they can find a way to enter the dark realm without any negative effects.
Shadowsight speaks to his father in private, with his father expressing his worries of losing his son. Shadowsight admits he will never understand worrying for his own kit, but he understands his duty as a medicine cat to help others, including the trapped spirits and Rootspring. Tigerstar continues on by saying that he will never understand the destiny his son has, but is proud of him nonetheless. As Snow and the Sisters prepare their ceremony, Bramblestar and Squirrelflight emerge from the Moonpool. After the joyous yowls, they reveal that Rootspring must have been kidnapped as he did not emerge with them. Shadowsight and Bristlefrost are determined to save him, and ask Snow to help them dream into the Dark Forest. The Clan cats rest next to the Moonpool as Snow chants them to sleep, and they awake in the Place of No Stars. Shadowsight and Bristlefrost quickly locate Rootspring in a heated battle against Snowtuft as Ashfur and the possessed spirits cheer on.

A Light in the Mist[]

"We've lost cats very precious to us. But if we stop now, we're going to lose them forever. We might be able to keep them close if we try. We have to save something more important than any of our lives. Something that means no cat can ever truly die. StarClan."
―Shadowsight to the Clan leaders A Light in the Mist, page 92
While Bristlefrost rushes forward to save Rootspring from Ashfur's spirits, and Shadowsight distracts Ashfur by exclaiming that Squirrelflight never loved him. Ashfur flings Shadowsight away, and Snowtuft distracts Ashfur long enough for Shadowsight, Bristlefrost, and Rootspring to escape. Spiresight and Stemleaf catch up with them, and Shadowsight is delighted to see his old friend. Shadowsight leads them to the path to StarClan, though the group has trouble navigating the changing terrain, especially as thick fog shrinks the afterlife's borders and dangerous dark water begins to rise. Rootsprings warns his friends to avoid it as he narrowly escaped death when he fell in it. Willowshine arrives with news of Snowtuft's death, and leads the group to the entrance to StarClan. They discover a thick wall of brambles blocking the passage created by Ashfur, though they learn that hope can weaken it. Their combined hope allows Leafpool to speak through a gap and inform them that StarClan is also shrinking: both the Dark Forest and StarClan are connected and cannot live without the other. The group splits up to distract Ashfur with Shadowsight tasked with returning to the living world to fetch help.
Shadowsight's wound in his leg begins to hurt after his scuffle with Ashfur, though he tries to ignore it as he heads towards the Moonpool. He eventually finds the path to the Moonpool near the top of some trees. Shadowsight struggles to climb the trees with his injured leg and falls once, but he manages to slip through the water and reunites with his body near the Moonpool. He wakes up excited to be back home, and realizes the crowd next to the Moonpool hasn't noticed him. Several cats confront Bramblestar to verify he's not the impostor, and Shadowsight steps up to defend them. His parents excitedly embrace their son, and quickly elaborates what happened. He also brings joyful news of StarClan's return, though they are trapped behind a thick bramble wall that threatens both afterlives' existence. He urges the Clan leaders to send cats to help break the barrier, though the leaders question the dangers: if a cat dies in the Dark Forest, their spirit ceases to exist. Shadowsight insists that saving StarClan is worth that risk, though cats like Mothwing question whether or not the Clans need StarClan's guidance when they've lived without it. Despite this, the Clan leaders agree to fight for StarClan, and the Sisters agree to help send them to the Dark Forest.
Each cat selects a volunteer to enter the Dark Forest, and back at ShadowClan's camp, the Clan debates who should go with numerous cats volunteering. Lightleap volunteers with several of her Clanmates vouching for her. At dawn on the next day, Shadowsight accompanies his sister to the Moonpool to meet the other volunteers: Crowfeather, Mistystar, Graystripe, and Violetshine. However, Lightleap is unable to make the journey due to fear crowding her mind. Shadowsight volunteers in her place, and the Sisters sing the Clan cats to the Dark Forest. When they enter the Dark Forest, they are greeted by Firestar, Onestar, Larksong, Needletail, Silverstream, Feathertail, and Redtail from StarClan, along with Rootspring, Bristlefrost, and the Dark Forest cats Maggottail, Sparrowfeather, and Silverhawk who agreed to help save their home, and the spirits of Willowshine, Berrynose, and Stemleaf. The groups joyfully reunite with one another, and Shadowsight greets his friends and is in awe of meeting the former ThunderClan leader Firestar.
Shadowsight attempts to use his connection to Ashfur to try and find him. He finds Ashfur only to see his own face on the dark warrior's. Shadowsight collapses and after he wakes up, he explains what he saw and that he failed to learn of Ashfur's location. Firestar commends his bravery for trying, and instead leads the group to higher ground with the dark water quickly rising. After traversing a wide stretch of dark water, the group finds Ashfur alone in a clearing. Instead, he is pleased to see them and Darktail and several rogue spirits arrive. A battle ensures and Rootspring encourages Shadowsight to hide in a tree since he can't fight. After it seems the rogues flee and the Clan cats have Ashfur cornered, the rogues return in a fury. Shadowsight yowls from his perch in warning, though he falls from the tree. Shadowsight struggles to get to his paws, and a tabby rogue notices him and prepares to push him into the nearby dark water. Bristlefrost saves him and yells for Shadowsight to run. Shadowsight struggles to scramble away, and Ashfur stops him, confronting the younger tom in his mind. Ashfur persuades Shadowsight to kill Bristlefrost as it would end the battle and lead to peace. When he refuses, Ashfur taunts Shadowsight for being a liability to his friends, but Shadowsight stands firm that he knows where he belongs.
Ashfur places Shadowsight in a dark dream while he drags his body towards the dark water, intending on killing him. Bristlefrost notices this and charges towards them, flinging herself at the dark warrior and sending them both into the dark water. They both drown, though Bristlefrost's spirit is lost forever. Shadowsight emerges from his trance in disbelief, wondering what happened. He notices Rootspring crouching where the dark water had receded, and realizes in horror that Bristlefrost is gone. He believes that he killed Bristlefrost, as Ashfur had intended. As the cats head towards the StarClan barrier, Shadowsight catches up with Juniperclaw and thanks him for saving his life when he was a kit. Shadowsight wallows in despair that he cannot go home; it was Shadowsight who let Ashfur take over Bramblestar's body which led to so many deaths, including Bristlefrost. He believes he deserves to stay in the Dark Forest, but Juniperclaw firmly insists that that is the Dark Forest talking and he deserves to go home. Shadowsight wonders if the hole he feels inside of him where Ashfur used to be would ever go away, and Leafpool insists it would. However, she reveals that Shadowsight never had a connection with StarClan; his connection was with the shadow. She insists now that he's seen into the shadows, as Spiresight predicted, he is free now, and Shadowsight feels the darkness that clung to him fade away.
The living cats briefly visit StarClan, and StarClan agrees that changes should be made to the warrior code and gives the Clans three moons to decide those changes. Shadowsight and the others return through the Moonpool and they reunite with their bodies. Mistystar breaks the news of Bristlefrost's death as their family members hurriedly greet them. Shadowsight pushes away his grief for Bristlefrost by helping find cobwebs with Mothwing for Graystripe's serious wounds. The bleeding is serious, and Graystripe admits that he's dying. He asks the medicine cats to let go, and Shadowsight and Mothwing stop and Graystripe passes. The medicine cats meet at the Moonpool the next night, and Shadowsight still feels hallow inside from Ashfur's absence. The medicine cats are eager to finally share with StarClan after so long, but Shadowsight wonders if he still belongs with them since he can't communicate with StarClan. Shadowsight still touches his nose to the Moonpool, but his thoughts remain empty. When the others wake up, they bring news of speaking with their ancestors. Shadowsight confesses that his connection was only to Ashfur and not with StarClan, and he never could communicate with their ancestors. However, the other medicine cats insist he's still a talented medicine cat and apologize if they ever made him feel otherwise. For the first time, Shadowsight feels welcomed and the emptiness in his heart is filled with joy.
A half-moon later at the Gathering, the Clans welcome Bramblestar back. He thanks everyone for helping him return to his body, and he names those who entered the Dark Forest as Lights in the Mist.

River[]

"That's big talk from you. You're the cat who allowed Ashfur into the Clans and then set him free!"
―Lightleap to Shadowsight River, page 73
At Frostpaw's first medicine cat meeting, Mothwing remarks that Shadowsight is "seriously weird" though Frostpaw notes that he's just scarred and maybe she'll get to know him better. She notices that he doesn't join the others to touch the Moonpool. Later, Shadowsight treats Sunbeam's injuries, though presses her to tell the truth. He disapproves of Lightleap's reckless behavior since she was not chosen to enter the Dark Forest. Shadowsight informs their parents who scold Lightleap for her behavior, and Lightleap yells at Sunbeam, thinking she broke her promise and told her parents. Shadowsight steps in and corrects Lightleap that it actually he who told their parents. He encourages Lightleap that she doesn't need to prove anything and they're all worried about her. Instead, Lightleap snaps at Shadowsight that he has no right since he was the one who let Ashfur into the Clans. Shadowsight is hurt by her words.
When Lightleap rushes into camp with news that Blazefire is trapped and hurt, Shadowsight rushes over with Sunbeam and Snaketooth. Shadowsight scolds Lightleap for daring Blazefire into a tunnel when it collapsed on him. Blazefire is pinned underneath two large rocks, though Shadowsight remarks he's just unconscious. They work together to remove the rocks, and Shadowsight notices that his leg is broken. Snaketooth, Sunbeam, and Lightleap carry his body back to camp to the medicine cats' den, and Shadowsight and Puddleshine continue treating Blazefire. Later, Snowbird sends Sunbeam to the medicine cats' den after she crawled through a bramble thicket to retrieve a pigeon, and Shadowsight scolds her reckless behavior.

Tigerheart's Shadow[]

Warning: Rippletail's appearances in Tigerheart's Shadow are a mistake as confirmed by Kate Cary and further installments in the canon. Slatefur was meant to be in the patrol traveling with Tigerheart.
"Yes. That's why I had the dream. I knew it while I was dreaming. It was to show you the way home."
―Shadowkit Tigerheart's Shadow, page 379
Shadowkit and his littermates, Pouncekit and Lightkit, were born one moon early in the abandoned Twoleg den of the guardian cats. The only son of Dovewing and Tigerheart, the gray tom-kit was named after his father's Clan and Spire's claim that he would "see into the shadows."
Later, Tigerheart brings a thrush to Dovewing and the kits and the gray she-cat gently laps Shadowkit so he wakes up. The tom-kit suspiciously asks if there were any scraps before slowly sinking into the bird. He looks thoughtful as he chews.
He is seen chasing his littermates around as Lightkit asks why there is more nests in the den. When Tigerheart starts to explain what a medicine cat is, Shadowkit skids to a halt along with Pouncekit. As his father starts to explain the lake territories, the dark gray tom-kit shivers, saying that it's dark in the forest.
Dovewing comes back from a hunting party and Shadowkit races to meet her along with his littermates to see if she has any food. Later, the kits are outside with their father and Shadowkit asks for a "bodger" ride, to which Tigerheart responds it's a badger ride. While giving them the badger ride, Tigerheart tells them how he fought a badger with his Clanmates once. Shadowkit slides off of his back and hurries to Dovewing, asking if they're ever have to fight badgers.
Shadowkit and his sisters are taken out of the Twoleg nest to watch the guardian cats battle train. While Lightkit and Pouncekit bounce around on the grass, Shadowkit stays on the stone slab, watching anxiously. When Pouncekit is caught in a Twoleg trap, Shadowkit scrabbles at the outside with his paws, and cries that it's eaten her and she's trapped forever.
Later, Shadowkit and his littermates sneak out of the nest to watch the Twolegs from a tree. As Pouncekit is talking, Shadowkit's eyes widen with alarm as a Twoleg kit breaks away from the group and runs toward them. After it is dragged away by an adult, their parents order them to climb down. When Shadowkit doesn't come down immediately, Tigerheart climbs up and carries him down. Shadowkit complains he didn't need help, he was only planning his route so he wouldn't look as clumsy as his sisters.
The next day, Tigerheart and Dovewing decide it's time to return to the lake and they leave the Twoleg nest, along with Spire, Ant, Cinnamon, and Blaze. While leaving the den, Lightkit and Pouncekit help Shadowkit climb to the entrance. Tigerheart carries Shadowkit as Dash leads them through the Thundersnake tunnel. When rats dart around the tunnel, Shadowkit freezes and wonders what they are. A Thundersnake passes, and Tigerheart grabs Shadowkit and tucks him under his chest. After it has gone, Shadowkit says he thought the tunnel had fallen in. Once they are out of the tunnel and city, Shadowkit wonders where all the big Twoleg dens are. He exclaims there are more stars in the sky here, then asks if those are their ancestors.
Shadowkit plays a game where he and his sisters guess the names of plants and animals. He finds a plant and asks if it's called thorn thistle, and Tigerheart tells him it's actually called sweetbriar. When some former ShadowClan joins the group, Shadowkit tells his parents Rippletail wants to know if they were going to ShadowClan or ThunderClan, going on the ask if they can choose, because he thinks he'll pick ShadowClan. Tigerheart wonders why, and Shadowkit says he feels like ShadowClan needs him.
He rides on Ant's back as they reach a river. They cross a Thunderpath going over the bridge, but it begins to split and rise in the center. Shadowkit and Lightkit squeal in panic, falling down past Tigerheart; Cinnamon catches Shadowkit.
Dovewing and Shadowkit leave their temporary camp to discuss a dream he had. Shadowkit tells his parents he knows how to get to the lake, explaining he dreamed of a Twolegplace Spiresight had mentioned was at the end of the Thunderpath, and beyond it, the moorland of WindClan, and says he'll lead the way there. He is unhappy with the cats decision to leave in a quarter moon, believing they must leave before then.
Later, Tigerheart asks him why he doesn't go play with the other kits, but Shadowkit ignores the question, saying they need to leave tonight, explaining he has a feeling they shouldn't be here. An owl injures Tigerheart, and Shadowkit and his sisters sit beside Dovewing, their eyes filled with fear as they gaze at their father. Dovewing nudges Shadowkit forward, asking if he can treat him. The kit looks panicked, whimpering he doesn't know. Cinnamon gives Dovewing a stern look, while wrapping her tail around Shadowkit. Desperate, Dovewing glares at her son, asking how far it is to the lake. Shadowkit flinches, saying there's a Twolegplace, water, and the moor. Pouncekit darts to her brother, telling her mother not to scare him, and Dovewing apologizes. After continuing their desperate journey back to the lake, Tigerheart is slipping away, and Shadowkit buries his nose into his father's pelt with his sisters. After he dies, Tigerheart sees his body being carried, and Shadowkit follows, staring down at his paws. Tigerheart is resurrected as Tigerstar, the new leader of ShadowClan. Shadowkit's eyes are as wide as moons as he touches noses with his father. He tells him Spiresight says this is right, and breaks out into a purr when Tigerstar tells him Spiresight is in StarClan.

Tawnypelt's Clan[]

Stoneteller: "Shadowkit and I had a long discussion with our ancestors. I think we've read their signs correctly, and they should help Shadowkit."
Tawnypelt: "Which ancestors? StarClan or the Tribe of Endless Hunting?"
Stoneteller: "Both. Shadowkit is very unusual. His powers stretch beyond borders, beyond the world that one cat can see."
—Stoneteller and Tawnypelt discussing Shadowkit's powers Tawnypelt's Clan, 193
Shadowkit and his sisters are sharply scolded by Juniperclaw for playing too loudly, and Tigerstar admonishes them all. The kits talk with Tawnypelt, who is concerned about their initial upbringing but loves them all dearly. Tawnypelt is frustrated with Dovewing for mothering her kits too much despite them almost apprentice-aged. Shadowkit begins to seize and Dovewing cries out in help. Dovewing stays with him in the nursery and Tawnypelt later takes over. Shadowkit begins to mutter about something falling and that he must stop it or cats might die.
Tawnypelt dismisses his mumbles as a bad dream, but Dovewing and Tigerstar believe it was a vision. Shadowkit experiences another violent vision and repeatedly screams, "It's falling!" When asked about who was in trouble, Shadowkit gets frustrated because he cannot remember. Puddleshine gives Shadowkit thyme to help him relax, but the medicine cat is unsure how to treat him. Shadowkit wakes up, suddenly remembering his vision, and explains he saw a big tree fall off a river and hurt cats behind a waterfall. Tawnypelt believes he's referring to the Tribe of Rushing Water.
Leafpool is also unsure how to treat Shadowkit, and Dovewing and Tawnypelt try to convince Tigerstar to let Shadowkit journey there. Tigerstar silences them with a sharp order. Tawnypelt tries to sneak Shadowkit out of the camp herself, but is caught my Dovewing's cry. After Tigerstar snaps at her, Dovewing stands up to Tigerstar and agrees to journey with Tawnypelt and Shadowkit to the mountains. Shadowkit helps Dovewing catch a vole for Tawnypelt and insists on wanting to become a medicine cat instead of a warrior. After another violent vision, Dovewing confesses her worries to Tawnypelt, but she insists she's a good mother to him, always patient and caring.
In the mountains, Snow questions why Dovewing and Tawnypelt would bring a kit to the mountains, but lead them back to the cave. Dovewing introduces Shadowkit to Stoneteller and explains Shadowkit's seizures. Stoneteller leads them to the Cave of Pointed Stones and Shadowkit explains his vision. Stoneteller asks to speak in private with Shadowkit to learn more. Shadowkit hurriedly greets Tawnypelt and Dovewing afterwards, and Stoneteller invites them to sleep in the Cave of Pointed Stones.
That night, Shadowkit screams that something is going to fall and urges for the cats to evacuate the cave. Once outside, Shadowkit orders them to climb to the riverbank. He commands everyone to push rocks into the river to stop the tree from falling and yells at them to hurry. Their barrier stops the tree from falling over the waterfall, and Shadowkit passes out. The tree suddenly lurches, but Stoneteller insists they weren't in any danger because Shadowkit was asleep. Lightning destroys the tree, and Shadowkit wakes up.
Stoneteller speaks with Shadowkit once more, and Shadowkit reassures his mother. Shadowkit greets Tawnypelt afterwards, and Stoneteller explains that Shadowkit's power extends beyond StarClan and the Tribe of Endless Hunting. The three return home, and while crossing ThunderClan territory, Rosepetal questions if Shadowkit was still a kit. He replies he wants to be a medicine cat apprentice. Back at camp, Shadowkit excitedly charges at his father and explains their adventure. He plays with his littermates and the other kits.
