- Alderheart crouches by the Thunderpath alongside Sparkpelt, Ivypool, and Lionblaze, preparing to help smuggle out Oakfur and Ratscar. He tells Ivypool that he trusts Violetpaw's capabilities to know when patrols go out, and relieved, they then spot Violetpaw and the elders. The two toms sigh in relief, and Alderheart briefly checks their wounds. Ivypool gives them some prey, and he is disgusted at how poorly Darktail treated the elders. As they prepare to leave, Alderheart praises Violetpaw, and the two elders thank her. They set off, and as they walk, they see Cloverfoot and Nettle hunting; Lionblaze predicts that the two cats will be there for a long time, so they decide to go deeper into the forest. Farther along, however, Sparkpelt sees two rogues patrolling; Lionblaze tells them to hide in the ferns, but Ratscar coughs, revealing their presence. Lionblaze tells Alderheart to take Oakfur and Ratscar to ThunderClan while he, Ivypool, and Sparkpelt discuss with the rogues. Alderheart panics, but Ivypool firmly tells him to go, and the three cats quickly cross the ThunderClan border. Cats exuberantly greet them when they reach the camp, but Alderheart leads the elders to the medicine den to treat their wounds. He tells Bramblestar that Lionblaze, Ivypool, and Sparkpelt are fighting off some rogues, and the three cats enter the camp at that moment. They only have light scratches, as the rogues were easy to chase off. Alderheart is joyful, but then thinks about how WindClan is still absent.
- A few days later, Alderheart treats Ratscar's leg noticing how the elder is stronger; Ratscar thanks him—Darktail treated the elders poorly, and he now regrets ever leaving ShadowClan. Alderheart reflects on how well their plans have been working, but there is still tension between cats, and he then hears Mistystar and Rowanstar arguing about attacking the rogues. Bramblestar also hears this and calls a Clan meeting; he announces that although the ShadowClan cats are welcome, they must also think about the future. Mistystar firmly objects to an attack, and through the argument, Lionblaze states that they need to rescue the prisoners, but Darktail will know something is up if they are smuggled out. The cats discuss how they would get all the prisoners out, and Snowbird proposes to incapacitate Darktail, but they would also have to fight. Many cats chime in with suggestions that become more and more far-fetched. Alderheart announces that he has a plan.
- Later, Alderheart and Mothwing are near the Thunderpath, and they spot Violetpaw as it grows dark. She apologizes for not bringing more cats, and Alderheart quickly explains how they must rescue all the prisoners at once by incapacitating Darktail. He shows her the poppy seeds, and Violetpaw solemnly agrees despite the dangers. Alderheart thinks about how Violetpaw has become so much grimmer and more serious in such a short time; he then pushes aside his regrets, knowing that they have not won yet. Mothwing murmurs that Violetpaw is brave, and Alderheart recalls the day that he first met Violetpaw and promised to make sure she had a good and happy life; he wonders how they ever got to where they are now.
