Chapter description[]
- Alderheart walks along the lake with a bundle of herbs in his mouth. Bramblestar leads, followed by Rowanstar and Mistystar, while Alderheart is behind. He hopes that Violetpaw succeeded in adding poppy seeds to the prey meant for Darktail and his group. The ginger tom remembers how Bramblestar had asked him to come because he didn't know how the prisoners would be doing, and that having a medicine cat would help, and that if the rogues fought back, the situation would become more tough, so having a medicine cat would be more easier. Alderheart had agreed, and was informed that they'd leave at sunset.
- As night falls, the cats arrive at a half-bridge and a narrow Thunderpath which divides the ShadowClan and RiverClan territories. They creep into the bushes on the far side, ensuring that the rogues wouldn't pick up their scent. Bramblestar reminds the patrol that their mission is to free the prisoners, and Rowanstar adds in the ShadowClan warriors who regret staying with Darktail. The brown tabby leader goes through the plan, which is to bring the prisoners to the ThunderClan camp, and that Darktail would be dealt with later. Mallownose grumbles that WindClan shouldn't have closed their borders, because their camp was much closer than ThunderClan's. Mistystar dismisses the topic, stating that it was just wasting time, while Bramblestar points out that either way, they'd have to cross a stream. The leader says that the patrol would only fight if the rogues resisted, and that hopefully most of the ShadowClan cats would be on their sides. Cloudtail points out that the chances of that were unlikely, given their situation, and Alderheart agrees.
- Alderheart hopes to see Needletail, and wonders about her well-being. Bramblestar asks if there is any questions, and before any cat can speak, the rogues start to fight. The patrol realizes their plan has failed, and Alderheart realizes Violetpaw was missing, and wonders if her attempt to drug Darktail and his rogues had failed too. He scans the cats, but cannot find her. He worries that he had lost her, but shakes off the fear. Roach and Sleekwhisker join the battle along with the former ShadowClan cats, who are fighting on the prisoner's side. The ginger tom spots Darktail, who's pelt is wet and bloody. The clan cats immediately pounce on top of the black and white cat. Darktail is unable to fight them because of being outnumbered, and orders his group to retreat.
