Chapter Summary

Dovewing's PoV

Dovewing, Foxleap, Splash, Swoop and Crag are on a border patrol. Dovewing falls, and Crag catches her on their way. Crag says the could still look at prey, but Foxleap whispers to Dovewing that only the skeleton of a squirrel would be in the tree. Dovewing could hear wings beating above her head, but of course no one could hear it. They see the eagle attacking the cats that had always been intruding the Tribe's territory, but none of the Tribe cats want to help them. They decide they will though, with Foxleap's and Dovewing's persuasion. Swoop, Splash and Crag tell Dovewing and Foxleap to stay out of they way because they are not trained for it. Foxleap goes in and attacks the eagle, but when Crag tells him to let go, he discovers his claws are stuck. Swoop jumps up onto the eagle's other wing, kicking at Foxleap until he falls off, but when Swoop goes to jump off, the eagle turns and lodges it's talon's into her back. The eagle carries Swoop off. Dovewing listens for awhile, until Swoop's cries could be heard no longer, and quietly pronounces her dead.

Foxleap faces the Tribe cats to say sorry. Splash is fuming and tells him it was all his fault. When they get back to the cave, Squirrelflight, Talon and Bird ask them what happened and Splash snarls that Swoop was taken by an eagle because of Foxleap, and Dovewing defends him. Crag goes to tell Stoneteller. Stoneteller tells the Clan cats they shouldn't have come. Jayfeather tells him it was his fault. He was the one who said they had to come, and he would do what he had to do, than they would go back to their home.
