Sharpclaw tells Leafstar that with the addition of new warriors, SkyClan should expand its borders. She agrees, and the pair plans a patrol to observe the nearby territory. The deputy suggests that Stick and Shorty should lead the patrols, but Leafstar disagrees. She mentions the attitude of the original SkyClan warriors when they led previous patrols. The two cats are interrupted by Ebonyclaw. Leafstar meets her deputy's request halfway and sends off the tom. The leader tells the black she-cat that she will speak to Echosong, but the warrior admits that wasn't the problem. She questions Shrewtooth's wellbeing to the leader's surprise. Ebonyclaw mentions the tom feeling left out and suggests she make some time to help him.
Leafstar approaches the tom and invites him on a quick hunt. Shrewtooth nervously agrees and the two head out of the gorge. While walking into the woodlands, Shrewtooth jumps at the sound of a bird. He attempts to catch it but misses his opportunity. Leafstar offers him the chance to catch it together, and the pair quickly catch the animal. The young warrior is no longer afraid but wishes to hunt some more. Leafstar sniffs the ground for more prey, but only finds tracks of dogs in a large clearing. She remembers the area where they rescued Petalnose and her kits. Shrewtooth quivers in fear and accuses the leader of bringing him here on purpose. Leafstar tries to reassure the warrior, but the tom tells her that this place is evil. The two go somewhere else to hunt, but Leafstar notices that he is in no condition to, and they head back to camp.
Leafstar directs the tom to Echosong's den, and the medicine cat asks what happened. Leafstar explains that she doesn't understand his situation and walks out of the den. The she-cat tells Mintpaw to grab Petalnose to check up on Shrewtooth. Petalnose comes quickly and the two try to understand the warrior's fears. They sit next to Shrewtooth and ask him about the events. He explains that he was born on a farm, until his mother died. A Twoleg put the tom in a den where he would experience being fed crow-food and living with a dog. The two cats reassure Shrewtooth as he falls asleep.
Petalnose turns to Leafstar demanding that the Twoleg should be taught a lesson. Sharpclaw joins their conversation and agrees with Petalnose's suggestion. The deputy suggests announcing a Clan meeting and Leafstar entertains the thought for a moment. She agrees and calls for a meeting on the Rockpile. Rumors quickly spread through the Clan and cats were watching Leafstar eagerly. After explaining the situation, the camp erupts into a fury with multiple cats mentioning an attack on the Twoleg. Harveymoon suggests tricking the Twoleg with kittypet tactics, while Bouncefire suggests using SkyClan battletechniques. The gathering is interrupted by Coal who reminds them that a Twoleg is a different kind of enemy. Many cats within the camp disagree with the Twolegplace cats. Stick, however, tells the camp that fear is their best tactic. Sharpclaw agrees and the cats begin planning a new way to seek revenge on the enemy. Leafstar allows Sharpclaw to take charge of the planning and he begins drawing a plan on the earth below.
