Leafstar drops a piece of prey into the fresh-kill pile. Petalnose invites the leader to join her for a bite, but the leader snaps at her and walks the other way. Leafstar walks towards a trail and hears Billystorm and Snookpaw training and awkwardly walks away from the tom. She enters her den with some relief. She remembers her conversation with Echosong, and how the medicine cat told her that becoming Billystorm's mate would be wrong. She falls into an unnerving sleep and finds herself surrounded by mist. She calls out for any cat but there is no response.
Leafstar is awoken by Billystorm asking if she is alright. He continues to ask her if she would join him on stalking Sharpclaw and Stick, as well as escape the Clan for a moment. Leafstar harshly denies, claiming that her Clanmates need her in camp. The leader tries to drive the tom home and berates him on his decision to challenge the deputy. After her hurtful words, Billystorm asks if she sees him as a kittypet and accuses her of being no different from Sharpclaw and Sparrowpelt. Leafstar snaps at the ginger-and-white cat, and he leaves the leader's den. Leafstar regrets speaking to Billystorm and falls back asleep.
Leafstar is covered by mist, but now she hears other cats nearby. She walks closer to the sound and finds a crowd, along with Cloudstar on top of the Rockpile. She overhears the ancient SkyClan cats arguing over their position in the forest territories. Cloudstar reminds his Clanmates that the other Clans wanted them out of the forest in the first place. A gray she-cat tells the Clan that she needs food or her kits will die. Fawnstep joins Cloudstar on the Rockpile and says that StarClan is always with them, even in the gorge. Their voices fade and she remembers the the prophecy the medicine cat had told her earlier. Leafstar also recalls Spottedleaf telling her to seize her moment.
Leafstar manages to avoid the tom for the next couple of days, only spotting him in the training grounds with his apprentice. Leafstar finds Sharpclaw organizing patrols and hears Billystorm asking to go near the Twolegplace to recruit some new warriors. Sharpclaw refuses and sets him up with a training patrol instead. The deputy asks Leafstar if she'd like to join. The leader quickly comes up with an excuse not to and she takes Egg, Harveymoon, and Macgyver on a hunting trip instead. While the patrol walks past the gorge, Echosong calls for her to look out for herbs on her trail. Echosong whispers in her ear about her decision with Billystorm and the leader tenses. She snaps at her medicine cat and the two cats part ways.
Leafstar notices the daylight-warriors' lack of hunting skills but commemorates Egg on his successful hunt. The patrol makes their way back to camp and realizes her Clanmates are sitting out in the clearing ominously. Fallowfern tells her that her kits heard a strange noise, and now every cat can hear it. Cherrytail admits Sharpclaw's patrol isn't back yet, and the Clan begins suspecting what the noise could be. Leafstar tries to listen for the sound and Sharpclaw enters demanding what is going on. The deputy suspects that a Twoleg could be making noises, and Leafstar organizes her Clan to inspect the sound.
The group of cats find an injured Twoleg kit that has fallen off a nearby cliff. Echosong argues that they must help the Twoleg kit and find her family to the dismay of the rest of the cats. Leafstar wants to help the poor kit but understands that this wasn't the responsibility of the Clan. She remembers Spottedleaf's words once again and agrees that the Clan will help the injured Twoleg kit.
