Chapter description

Leafstar wakes up on the end of the woods. She notices some of her Clannmates frantically huddling around a shape lying on the ground. Their voices were muffled, so she continues to head toward the warriors. She finds her own body below her paws. Spottedleaf approaches the leader, and she tells her that she is losing her first life. Leafstar glances around and finds Cloudstar reassuring her as well. The two cats remind Leafstar that Sharpclaw is a dedicated warrior and deputy, and that she should no longer doubt him. Leafstar is anxious to accept their consolation, but Spottedleaf tells the leader to use the life she had given her. The pale-and-cream she-cat opens her eyes in her own body, and asks Cherrytail if her kits are alright. She meets the eyes of all her Clanmates and tells them to help win the battle.

Red and Harley appear from scrap bramble in horror and asks what is happening. Red catches Stick and Dodge tearing each other apart, and she stands on top of her father while the two cats wrestle. Stick tells his daughter that he is freeing him from Dodge's tyranny. Red admits that she only joined Dodge's group because of her love for Harvey. Stick lunges for the tom, but Red jumps in front of her father. Stick's claws slash Red's throat and her body falls limp. Leafstar quickly calls for cobwebs and Shrewtooth offers goosegrass from the ditch. The she-cat is covered in blood from the wounds, and Harvey begins to grieve what their future was going to be like.

Stick threatens Harvey and Dodge, but Sharpclaw jumps on the vengeful tom and calls off the battle. Leafstar agrees and asks if Stick's group has learned nothing from the warrior code. She notices some of Stick's friends agreeing, but Dodge is reluctant to call the battle over. Leafstar asks Dodge if Stick can suffer more than losing his daughter. As the Clan cats walk back to their territory, Cora kindly thanks them for their help and kindness. Leafstar wishes she would stay with SkyClan.

The cats slowly make their way back to camp. SkyClan suffers major casualties after the battle. They make camp under trees and the leader hunts for her Clan. In the morning, each cat is helping eachother with their wounds, or with hunting and friendships grow stronger. The group of cats begin their march again, and Leafstar notices Sharpclaw right next to her. Leafstar tells the deputy that her place is leader of SkyClan and if he can't accept it, he must leave. Sharpclaw agrees that she is perfect for the job to Leafstar's dismay. The two begin to understand each other's frustration. They talk about the future of SkyClan and its destiny apart from the forest territories. Leafstar modifies the warrior code to SkyClan's needs. As she watches her Clanmates continue to move, she finds Billystorm. She believes she has the power to forge her own destiny, and asks the tom if they could chat.
