"I'm sorry Rowankit died—but he might still be alive if Tigerstar hadn't agreed to change the warrior code. I knew he shouldn't have gone along with it. Doesn't he know he's meant to keep ShadowClan safe from outsiders? Not invite them in. He should know as well as any cat what happens when strangers join a Clan."

Chapter description[]

The patrol reaches the Clan territories, and the others gradually split up while Sunbeam and Lightleap anxiously head to ShadowClan territory. When they reach camp, Sunbeam sees that Blazefire is healthy, and the others are waiting. Lightleap runs to the medicine den, while Sunbeam sees grief in Cloverfoot's gaze and realizes that Rowankit has passed away. She enters the medicine den, where Rowankit's family is mourning him, and she sees that Oakfur, Cinnamontail, Streamkit, and Bloomkit are ill. As Dovewing comforts Lightleap, Sunbeam, feeling guilty about her coldness toward Lightleap, leaves. Berryheart greets her daughter and offers some comfort, though she seems angry, and when Berryheart looks at Fringewhisker, Sunbeam realizes that she blames Fringewhisker for the greencough infection.
At sunset, Rowankit's family and Clanmates prepare his body for his vigil. Shadowsight questions Sunbeam about WindClan and RiverClan's decision not to send anyone on the mission, telling her that Tigerstar had gone to see Kestrelflight and Mothwing about their catmint, and that Mothwing behaved strangely. Before they can discuss it further, Tigerstar calls the vigil together, and as the cats grieve, Sunbeam resents Blazefire and Lightleap for their closeness. After the Clan finishes the vigil, Berryheart approaches Sunbeam, expressing annoyance over WindClan and RiverClan refusing to send warriors on the journey. She blames the changes to the warrior code for Rowankit's death, and thinks that Dovewing softened Tigerstar.
As Sunbeam wonders if Fringewhisker brought greencough to ShadowClan, Berryheart invites her to a meeting to discuss Clan-swapping. Several ShadowClan cats meet, and they accuse SkyClan of having greencough and Fringewhisker of bringing it to ShadowClan. Sunbeam attempts to reason with them, but they do not listen, and Berryheart says that it was a mistake to allow Clan-swappers into ShadowClan. Snaketooth suggests that Fringewhisker brought greencough deliberately, causing accusations against SkyClan for wanting power and trying to weaken the other Clans. They all agree that the Clans should not mix, making Sunbeam nervous.
