Chapter description

Nightheart feels restless in the ThunderClan camp after his journey and thinks that his Clanmates might respect him more now. Squirrelflight organizes patrols, and as the other cats leave, he wonders when his name will be called while imagining himself finally being treated as a true warrior. Nightheart recalls how Sunbeam seemed to have more confidence in him than his own Clan. However, to his disappointment, the deputy tells him to clean Bramblestar's den; Nightheart is indignant because it is an apprentice task. Bayshine, Fernstripe, and Shellfur are also given tasks around camp, and Squirrelflight warmly watches as the kits hurry out of the nursery carrying leaf scraps. Irritated, Nightheart thinks that the other members of his patrol have probably been treated with respect instead of having to do chores, as ThunderClan seems to not appreciate him because he does not like being Firestar's kin. He enters Bramblestar's den, and the leader blankly stares at the wall.

Bramblestar does not give Nightheart much attention, and the warrior awkwardly makes a joke and immediately regrets it. He cautiously cleans the nest while the leader silently watches him. The older cat then asks Nightheart to settle a dispute about Harestar's statement about conflict over prey at the Gathering. Nightheart remembers how Squirrelflight had gone against orders and taken him and Sparkpelt to the WindClan camp. He tries to act like he does not know anything, and the leader apologizes for keeping him from his task. After a moment, Bramblestar remembers how Squirrelflight mentioned talking to Harestar, but Nightheart corrects that they spoke to Crowfeather, and Harestar probably did not mean anything serious. He wonders if Bramblestar had only suspected that Squirrelflight went to WindClan, and he had confirmed it. Before he leaves, the leader asks if he went with the deputy, and Nightheart admits to it. Bramblestar glares in Squirreflight's direction but then deflates again; Nightheart wonders how the leader became so tired and defeated. Bramblestar says he needs to rest, and the warrior is worried but is told to leave.

As Nightheart leaves, he worries about Bramblestar, and remembering Ashfur's rule, he wonders if Bramblestar will ever return to who he was before. His thoughts spiral as he considers what would happen if Squirrelflight, who does not take him seriously, led the Clan. Nightheart wishes that he could still talk to Sunbeam, and Bayshine's voice makes him look up. He asks the warrior if he feels like he truly belongs in ThunderClan, and Bayshine is confused at why anyone would ever want to leave what he considers the best Clan. Nightheart hastily mews that the warrior is right, and wonders if anyone even understands him except for Sunbeam.
