Chapter description[]

Nearing the Moonpool, Owlnose asks Frostpaw what will happen at his nine lives ceremony, though Frostpaw is unsure herself but speculates his kin might appear. When they arrive, Owlnose despairs over his insecurities about becoming leader in an unorthodox manner after Mistystar and Reedwhisker died. Frostpaw decides to speak to StarClan first to ease his worries. However, StarClan doesn't appear to Frostpaw, and the medicine cat apprentice resolves that this ceremony must be for Owlnose alone. Owlnose crouches down to touch the Moonpool. After some time, he steps away, concerningly explaining that StarClan did not speak to him. As they return back home, Frostpaw wonders if she made the wrong choice but quickly casts aside those thoughts. When they arrive back in camp, Duskfur is organizing the morning's patrols and the remaining Clan members excitedly greet Owlnose as their new leader.
Frostpaw breaks the news that StarClan didn't grant Owlnose his nine lives. The Clan debates on what that means for their leadership when Splashtail insists that StarClan might be waiting for Owlnose to gain some experience leading before granting him additional lives. Mothwing supports Splashtail, citing that she believes Frostpaw made the right choice and they should stick with it. The Clan agrees to wait until later for Owlnose to receive their ancestors' blessing, and Mothwing prompts Owlnose to pick a deputy in the meantime. He struggles for a moment before deciding on Splashtail. Duskfur, Minnowtail, and Shimmerpelt argue against Splashtail's inexperience and lack of an apprentice, though Owlnose meekly insists he works well with the brown tabby tom. As the Clan argues, Mothwing and Splashtail insist they must lie to the other Clans that Owlnose is now Owlstar and that he has succeeded Mistystar and Reedwhisker to avoid looking weak. However, they are interrupted by Nightsky arriving with Tawnypelt, who brings news of an emergency Gathering that night to discuss the catmint shortage that resulted in Rowankit's death. As the ShadowClan warrior leaves, Frostpaw wonders how RiverClan will maintain their ruse by tonight.
