"What does it matter now how they died? I'm more interested in why they chose cats like these to replace them! For StarClan's sake! They might as well have chosen kits!"

Chapter description[]

Sunbeam reflects how unusual it is to be at the island without the full moon casting light into the dark night. She ponders about Berryheart's beliefs about the changes to the warrior code and how Sunbeam can no longer confide with her friends Lightleap and Blazefire. She spots Nightheart approaching her and is pleased that she at least has him as her friend. Nightheart comforts Sunbeam over Rowankit's death though their conversation is cut short by Leafstar, Harestar, and Tigerstar angrily snarling at Owlnose on the Great Oak. The other Clan leaders demand to know where Mistystar is, though Mothwing steps forward with news of Mistystar's and Reedwhisker's deaths. She doesn't provide any details but announces that Owlstar and Splashtail are their leader and deputy now.
The energy at the Gathering heightens as news of Mistystar's and Reedwhisker's unexpected deaths sends a stir through the crowd of cats. Amid the numerous questions, Mothwing insists Owlstar will explain everything. Owlstar explains that Mistystar died a moon ago of greencough. Tigerstar questions why RiverClan didn't participate in the patrol to find catmint if they had greencough in their camp while Harestar ridicules Owlstar's and Splashtail's inexperience. Owlstar goes on to explain that Reedwhisker—Reedstar, he later clarifies—was granted nine lives before dying of greencough a quarter-moon ago, though the other Clan leaders quickly catch on to Owlstar's lack of confidence to answer their questions. When Mothwing attempts to stand up for Owlstar, she mistakenly calls him Owlnose, something Leafstar notices and she questions if Reedwhisker or Owlnose were ever granted nine lives. Tigerstar suddenly recalls how RiverClan sent a patrol to ShadowClan asking if they had seen Reedwhisker, and Harestar, Leafstar, and Squirrelflight agree.
Tigerstar calls out on the numerous lies and Owlstar finally concedes, admitting he wasn't given nine lives and neither did Reedwhisker. Tigerstar argues that RiverClan is weak and a weak Clan threatens all five Clans, citing how the impostor's schemes in ThunderClan impacted every Clan. He offers to help advise RiverClan since they are without leadership, though his offer is shot down when the other Clans remind him of the first Tigerstar and Darktail. Tigerstar insists he's not like them and has no intention on taking over RiverClan. To settle the debate, Leafstar offers to send Fidgetflake to RiverClan in hopes an experienced medicine cat with a connection to StarClan will help Owlnose receive his nine lives and Mothwing agrees. Harestar prompts Tigerstar to discuss the catmint shortage that led him to call the emergency Gathering, though Tigerstar insists they have bigger issues to solve with RiverClan's lack of leadership. The Clans disperse, and Nightheart and Sunbeam bid each other farewell. As ShadowClan heads home, Tigerstar and Berryheart argue about whether ShadowClan should aid RiverClan. Sunbeam worries about how outspoken her mother is becoming and wonders if she'll have to make a choice to stand against her mother.
