- Nightheart is cleaning the elders' den, grateful that the elders have gone hunting. He hears the warriors talking and detects SkyClan scent, and he emerges from the den to find Leafstar being escorted into camp. Squirrelflight greets her and makes small talk while they wait for Bramblestar, who takes a long time, and Nightheart thinks about the tension between Bramblestar and his mate after Nightheart had told Bramblestar about the secret WindClan visit. Bramblestar finally appears, unkempt, and Leafstar expresses concern about Tigerstar's plans for RiverClan. Bramblestar defends Tigerstar's idea to lead RiverClan, and Leafstar insists that she believes that Tigerstar intends to do more since he is ambitious. Despite Leafstar and Squirrelflight's concerns, Bramblestar supports Tigerstar and does not believe that Tigerstar will invade RiverClan, and he refuses to take action.
- Squirrelflight supports Bramblestar's decision until Leafstar leaves, at which point she turns on him, and the two mates argue over Tigerstar's intentions. Once Squirrelflight leaves, Bramblestar seems disturbed, and Nightheart eventually decides to leave. As he does so, Bramblestar calls to him and invites him for a walk, and they leave camp. Bramblestar asks Nightheart for his opinion on the Gathering, and Nightheart argues that the Clans are more willing to help each other now than they used to be, arguing in favor of supporting SkyClan. When Bramblestar asks if they cannot find out what Tigerstar is planning, Nightheart suggests that they can ask a ShadowClan warrior questions. Bramblestar asks him to sneak into ShadowClan territory to speak with Sunbeam, and Nightheart agrees, eager to prove himself, though Bramblestar warns him that Squirrelflight should not find out.
