"Trust no cat. If Curlfeather had been killed on purpose, the warning made sense. She realizes, with a sickening sense of dread, that there was a connection that linked every death in RiverClan over the past moon. Why hadn't she noticed it before? It seemed so obvious. Every cat who'd died was a leader or was about to become one." |

Chapter description[]
- Fidgetflake sorts through Mothwing and Frostpaw's dilapidated herb storage and scolds Frostpaw for failing to upkeep it with leaf-bare so close, but Frostpaw insists they haven't had any time with Mothwing organizing patrols. Fidgetflake briefly sympathizes with Frostpaw for the difficult times but wishes they had asked for help sooner. He questions when exactly Mistystar and Reedwhisker had died since they were absent from the Gathering nearly a moon ago. Unsure which lies were told, Frostpaw just insists that they both died a while ago, long enough for their herb storage to dwindle. She joins Fidgetflake in observing Owlnose and Splashtail organize the afternoon's patrols. Owlnose orders Gorseclaw, Nightsky, and Havenpelt to hunt in the water meadow instead of the river, though Shimmerpelt points out her patrol already hunted there that morning. Splashtail insists Gorseclaw's patrol should hunt in the gorge. Owlnose stresses about the harsh current in the gorge and asks Mothwing for her input. She agrees to send Gorseclaw's patrol to hunt in the gorge and sends out two border patrols. Shimmerpelt grumbles why Mothwing is letting Owlnose and Splashtail organize the patrols if she's just going to step in anyway.
- Frostpaw notices Fidgetflake's displeasure at watching them dysfunctionally organize the patrols. Splashtail notices Frostpaw's worried expression and checks in on her. He insists that he and Owlnose are still getting used to their responsibilities and comforts her. Frostpaw is heartwarmed by his kind words and briefly wonders if she had feelings for him. However, Fidgetflake interrupts them by demanding where Mothwing is. The RiverClan medicine cat quickly arrives and Fidgetflake points to a shriveled bundle of herbs he had found wedged in their storage: catmint. He demands to know why they had catmint when their leader, deputy, and Rowankit had perished of greencough. Mothwing insists they had forgotten they had any catmint and that Fidgetflake is only here to help Owlnose receive his nine lives. Offended, Fidgetflake asks for them to do it now so he can return to SkyClan.
- On their way to the Moonpool, Frostpaw asks for Fidgetflake to explain to Owlnose how a leadership ceremony works to ease his concerns. While he wasn't present, Fidgetflake explains how Leafstar had met Cloudstar and her mother. He also mentions how the whole of StarClan will be present, which prompts Frostpaw to ask the SkyClan medicine cat if he's even seen all of StarClan before. He replies that he has, which causes Frostpaw to recall how her visions have always been vague and unclear. They pass by the place where Curlfeather died by dogs. While Fidgetflake is sympathetic, he asks why Mothwing didn't inform Harestar about the dogs since they were on WindClan territory especially since his patrols have found prey bones nearby. Upon Frostpaw's prompting, Fidgetflake wonders if the bones were left there to lure the dogs, though Mothwing dismisses his speculations. With horror, Frostpaw realizes that every cat who has recently died was in a position of leadership. When they reach the Moonpool, Owlnose abruptly announces he's stepping down.
