Chapter description[]

Nightheart is excited about his mission to speak with ShadowClan warriors about Tigerstar's plans, though Bayshine has seemed unenthusiastic. He takes prey to Spotfur and her kits, and when Bayshine wakes, Nightheart asks if he is ready to go. Bayshine wants to do patrols first, and, annoyed, Nightheart pulls him aside and confronts him. Bayshine is skeptical about the mission, as Bramblestar does not have permission to enter ShadowClan territory, and he does not believe that Sunbeam will betray ShadowClan. Nightheart frustratedly tries to argue, but Bayshine points out Bramblestar's new impulsiveness and disconnection. Angry at Bayshine for his doubt in Bramblestar, Nightheart enforces their plans, and Bayshine gives in.
When Nightheart returns from patrol, he finds Squirrelflight waiting for him with Bayshine, and he realizes that Bayshine has reported him. Squirrelflight confronts him and Bramblestar, and Nightheart argues that they have to know Tigerstar's plans. Bramblestar tries to make light of it, but Squirrelflight refuses to let the mission happen, and the two mates argue, ignoring Nightheart's desperate interjections. Squirrelflight tells Nightheart that the mission is not happening, and she and Bramblestar leave. Bayshine makes sure that the frustrated Nightheart will not run off anyway, but Nightheart simply eats angrily, feeling betrayed by Bayshine and Bramblestar. Remembering the catmint mission, Nightheart decides to go to see Sunbeam and ask her to be his mate so that he might join ShadowClan.
As he sets off to ShadowClan, Nightheart thinks that he may still be able to get information about Tigerstar to prove Squirrelflight wrong. He reaches ShadowClan territory and, distracted by his thoughts, gets caught by Blazefire. Blazefire is unexpectedly happy that he has come to see Sunbeam and goes to retrieve her, and Nightheart nervously waits. Sunbeam arrives and greets him kindly, which encourages Nightheart to confide in her about ThunderClan, saying that she is the only cat who treats him well. She tells him about Lightleap and Blazefire's betrayal, as well as Berryheart's issues with cats switching Clans. Nightheart asks her questions about this, and to his relief, Sunbeam supports inter-Clan relationships. He prods her for information about Tigerstar, and she uncertainly tells him that Tigerstar will likely wait on RiverClan. She asks if she is foolish to feel upset about Lightleap and Blazefire, and Nightheart reassures her, leading her to express fondness for him. They hear a ShadowClan patrol nearby just then, and Nightheart flees, convinced that he belongs with Sunbeam.
