"Look at me. You mustn't tell any cat about this. We'll figure something out. But for now, no cat should know that you can't reach StarClan. It's happened to medicine cats before. It doesn't meant you don't have a connection to them, only that you can't reach them right now. I'm sorry I can't help you with this. I'm your mentor. I should be able to teach you. But you have to master this skill alone. That means it'll be harder for you than for an ordinary medicine-cat apprentice. But you're smart, and you're quick, and your heart is in the right place. You can do this. I know you can. You just need to keep trying."

Chapter description[]

Owlnose leaves to return to camp and Frostpaw blames herself for misinterpreting StarClan's message. Fidgetflake leaves to call an emergency medicine cat meeting, though Mothwing laments about informing the other Clans about their weakness. When he leaves, Mothwing prompts Frostpaw to communicate with StarClan, though her apprentice is beginning to question her connection with their ancestors. She touches the Moonpool though only sees a blur of fur, and Frostpaw panickily steps away from the Moonpool in exasperation. She wails that she can't speak with StarClan since her visions always felt off and her revelation about the clarity of Fidgetflake's visions makes her doubt her own connection. Mothwing comforts her apprentice, saying that they must keep this a secret from the others, and she laments about not being able to properly help her. Feeling slightly better, Frostpaw tries again. However, her thoughts are scattered with some cat supposedly causing Curlfeather's death, Frostpaw's future if she can't be a medicine cat, and her feelings for Splashtail. Still not hearing anything, the gray she-cat resolves that she doesn't have a special connection with StarClan, and she and Mothwing head back home. However, as they arrive to RiverClan's camp, they notice Tigerstar and his warriors standing in the clearing.
