- As the battle begins, Sunbeam is in disbelief about fighting RiverClan, recalling how Tigerstar had previously insisted he wasn't going to take RiverClan by force. However, as Shimmerpelt attacks Sunbeam's brother Spireclaw, Sunbeam launches herself into the fray to help him. As Sunbeam battles Shimmerpelt, Mallownose strikes at Spireclaw and Sunbeam loses sight of her brother. After kicking Shimmerpelt away, Sunbeam attempts to help her mother Berryheart fight Owlnose, though Gorseclaw confronts her. Gorseclaw strikes at her forehead and Sunbeam lashes out at his cheek. Gorseclaw is momentarily caught off guard by his wound and Sunbeam briefly reflects how many of RiverClan's young warriors are experiencing battle for the first time. Tigerstar calls for his warriors to push the RiverClan cats through the reeds that surround their camp. Sunbeam spots Tawnypelt fighting against Breezeheart and Graypaw, and she moves to help her Clanmate when Gorseclaw recovers from his stupor and attacks her again. Spireclaw takes over the fight with Gorseclaw, and Sunbeam rushes to help Tawnypelt. The two she-cats are joined by their Clanmates as they create a line of warriors forcing the RiverClan cats towards the reeds.
- Frostpaw wails for the battle to stop but RiverClan's warriors continue to fight viciously. Icewing and Mistpaw attempt to break ShadowClan's line but Tawnypelt and Sunbeam shove them back. Mallownose leaps over the line and bites Stonewing's tail. Sunbeam and Stonewing fight Mallownose until he staggers through the reed barrier and falls into the river beyond. Several other RiverClan cats flee through the reeds into the river. The fighting draws to end as Tigerstar has Duskfur pinned down by her throat. He demands her to give up but Duskfur refuses, insisting she'd rather die to save RiverClan. The two tabbies argue about Tigerstar's true intentions to help RiverClan by bloodshed. As Duskfur continues to resist, Splashtail convinces the old warrior to surrender. Tigerstar lets her go and compliments her skills in the fight. With the battle over, Tigerstar orders for wounds to be treated and patrols to hunt. As Splashtail continues to glare defiantly at Tigerstar, Tigerstar asks for Splashtail to trust him. Sunbeam wonders if the new RiverClan leader really thinks his new Clan will ever trust him.
