- Alone in her nest, Frostpaw grieves over the death of her mother Curlfeather by dogs, wondering why StarClan didn't save her when she was chosen to be their next leader. Splashtail, Frostpaw's friend, comes in to check on her and brings her a trout. Splashtail attempts to cheer her up since she hasn't eaten since Curlfeather's vigil days prior. The RiverClan tom explains how Mothwing, Frostpaw's mentor, is organizing the patrols, and Frostpaw is puzzled why the senior warriors aren't stepping up instead. Splashtail speculates every cat is still in shock after Curlfeather's death and others might not want the responsibility of leadership. Mothwing arrives to the medicine cat's den and orders Splashtail to join Owlnose's border patrol.
- Mothwing encourages Frostpaw to eat though her apprentice refuses. She attempts to relate to Frostpaw's pain by explaining how she heavily grieved for Willowshine's death though insists life does eventually move on. Frostpaw snaps at her mentor that nothing is normal since they are without a leader and a deputy again, but Mothwing insists her Clan needs her. Frostpaw asks about asking the other Clans for help, but Mothwing disagrees, believing RiverClan is too vulnerable like how ThunderClan was under the impostor's reign. She reminds Frostpaw that she needs to return to the Moonpool to ask StarClan for their next leader, though Frostpaw wonders why Mothwing can't take charge as she's already organizing patrols. Mothwing prefers being the Clan's medicine cat instead. Knowing how difficult this is for Frostpaw, Mothwing offers to go with her. Frostpaw reminds herself of Curlfeather's final words—trust no cat—but she believes Mothwing is sincere. The gray she-cat is unsure if she can make herself return to the scene of Curlfeather's death though resolves herself to try for her Clan's sake.
