"Frecklewish is an honorable medicine cat. She wouldn't lie about her herb supply. Fidgetflake took me into the woods and showed me where the catmint grows. There was nothing but a few bare stems. Some harvests are just poor, and there's nothing we can do about it." |

Chapter description[]
- Sunbeam carries some bracken, thinking about how she wants to keep busy to not think about Lightleap or Blazefire, and Rowankit has greencough. Puddleshine is away to get catmint from SkyClan, but when he returns, he grimly states that SkyClan could not spare any. Tigerstar is anxious, and when Puddleshine says that Frecklewish already refused to let ThunderClan forage, the leader angrily growls that she is hoarding the herb. Puddleshine corrects that she does not have enough, and although Tigerstar is still angry, the medicine cat insists that Frecklewish would not lie. Sunbeam grows worried at the thought of Rowankit possibly dying, and Blazefire also caught it from the kit. The leader growls that they must ask the other Clans, and when Cloverfoot says that it could make them look weak, he orders for them organize three patrols as he values Rowankit more than ShadowClan's pride. Puddleshine tells him that they already know ThunderClan has no catmint, but Tigerstar states to send the patrols immediately. Sunbeam offers to go, not for the sake of Rowankit but instead for Blazefire.
- On the way to RiverClan's camp, Sunbeam asks if they should have waited by the border, but Scorchfur and Snaketooth state that a kit is sick. She recalls how last time they met RiverClan warriors, they were not hostile but behaved strangely. As they walk, Mallownose and Splashtail aggressively halt them, and Scorchfur explains that Rowankit is ill. Although the warriors calm down, they are oddly defensive and tell them to wait. Snaketooth asks if there is a problem in their camp, and the RiverClan cats quickly reassure them; Mallownose irritably lets them follow him. Sunbeam is uneasy as they enter the camp, and she notices how the cats look healthy, but the camp is oddly unkempt. Mallownose calls for Frostpaw, and Sunbeam notices how exhausted the apprentice looks. Snaketooth says that they need catmint, and Frostpaw hesitates. Mothwing then enters and asks what they are doing, and when they explain Rowankit's illness, she grows concerned but mews that they do not have any either. The medicine cat sharply stops them from searching their territory, and Sunbeam wonders if she is hiding something. The patrol is quickly shooed away from the camp, and she senses how RiverClan not only does not want them there, but also seems to have troubles they are hiding.
- As they reach ShadowClan's camp empty-handed, Sunbeam apologetically looks at Puddleshine. Tigerstar frowns, and they tell him how RiverClan was eager to escort them away and behaved even more strangely. Just then, Flaxfoot and Whorlpelt race into camp, and to Puddleshine's relief, they have catmint. However, there is very little of it, and Berryheart and Yarrowleaf look at Fringewhisker as they say that they usually do not get whitecough this early. Tigerstar tells Puddleshine to call an emergency medicine cat meeting, and Berryheart confronts Fringewhisker. She says that if the whitecough outbreak in SkyClan from before Fringewhisker left had turned to greencough, it would explain why SkyClan could not spare catmint. Sunbeam realizes that more movement between Clans also transmits illness, and Berryheart and Yarrowleaf accuse Fringewhisker of bringing whitecough. Spireclaw tells his mate to go hunting with him, and Sunbeam's mother watches them angrily. Sunbeam wonders if it is fair to blame the former SkyClan cat, as the Clans have always interacted. Looking at the medicine den, she worries about Blazefire and the thought of him dying.
