Chapter description[]

After the other medicine cats leave the Moonpool, Frostpaw prepares to communicate with StarClan. Her vision is blurry, but she soon makes out Curlfeather, her mother. Frostpaw is delighted to see her mother's spirit unscathed from the dogs and apologizes for failing to save her. Curlfeather insists it's not her daughter's fault and asks Frostpaw to focus on her Clan instead of grieving. Frostpaw asks who RiverClan's next leader should be, but her mother explains the Clan must decide for itself. She encourages Frostpaw to pick RiverClan's next leader who is beyond the obvious choice. The gray she-cat prods if that means Duskfur or Shimmerpelt shouldn't be leader, but Curlfeather ignores her question and instead replies how proud she is of her daughter. Frostpaw is confused by her mother's contradictory advice since Curlfeather had previously insisted to trust no one, but Frostpaw abruptly wakes up. She passes along Curlfeather's message to Mothwing, who trusts her apprentice to pick the right cat. As they head back to camp, the gray she-cat ponders about the weight of her decision.
