Chapter description[]

Sunbeam, feeling anxious, decides to check on Puddleshine and see if he is awake, but Tigerstar approaches her with Lightleap. Tigerstar informs her that Puddleshine is staying to care for Rowankit, and that Lightleap is taking his place on the journey, to Sunbeam's annoyance. After warning them against taking risks, Tigerstar leaves them, and Sunbeam feels jealous as she wonders if Lightleap is hoping to impress Blazefire in case he falls ill. The two she-cats head out, and Lightleap pushes Sunbeam out of the way of a hanging branch, causing Sunbeam further agitation. They find the rest of the patrol, and Sunbeam greets Flamepaw, who tells her that his new name is Nightheart.
They reach WindClan territory and Nightheart, noticing Sunbeam's hunger, suggests that they hunt, but Rootspring tells them to wait until they leave WindClan's territory. Once they make it around the Moonpool, Fidgetflake points out the Twolegplace that has catmint. Sunbeam detects rabbit scent and decides to hunt, avoiding Lightleap and letting Nightheart join her, and she and Nightheart manage to catch a large rabbit. As the cats eat, Lightleap tells them about the rockfall that injured Blazefire, and Sunbeam leaves in irritation.
The cats travel a little further before stopping to rest for the night, reassuring Lightleap, who worries for Rowankit. Agitated that the others are comforting Lightleap, Sunbeam leaves them with Nightheart, reaching the Thunderpath. The patrol begins to cross, but a monster bears down on them, and the cats usher Fidgetflake across as he falls behind. Sunbeam is dazed by the monster's lights, and Rootspring shoves her onward until they reach the other side. The patrol continues on until they find an oak to rest beside, and Sunbeam volunteers to take first watch with Nightheart to avoid Lightleap. Fidgetflake suggests that they hunt the following morning, and he worries that Twolegs may have destroyed the catmint.
The patrol discusses the possibility of fighting kittypets, with Lightleap asking if kittypets follow a code. This leads Nightheart to mention that StarClan allows the Clans to change the warrior code. Lightleap discusses Tigerstar's relationship with Dovewing and how it had been against the code, and Rootspring talks about his love for Bristlefrost. Sunbeam asks what the point is of having a code if they change it, and as the cats settle, she wonders about it. She and Nightheart discuss the warrior code, and Nightheart says that warriors can adapt to new Clans. He confides that he is unhappy in ThunderClan, as every cat is hard on him. Sunbeam sympathizes, telling him about Blazefire and Lightleap, and offers some comfort.
