"Then, like a fish suddenly breaking the surface of the river, one name leaped ahead of the others. [Frostpaw] narrowed her eyes, focusing her thoughts on it, waiting for a reason—any reason—to knock it back again so that it could languish among the other discarded names. But no reason came. She stiffened. Could it be? Had she finally thought of a warrior who might be RiverClan's next leader? Hope sparked in her paws. Yes! This was it. The warrior StarClan had meant. At last. She knew who to choose!"

Chapter description[]

Frostpaw despairs over Curlfeather's advice as she mentally debates over who to pick as RiverClan's next leader. She thinks about every warrior, though she seems to systematically come up with a reason why they shouldn't be leader. However, one name suddenly stands out in Frostpaw's mind. When she can't think of a reason otherwise, Frostpaw believes she has found their next leader. The gray she-cat wakes up Mothwing and her mentor calls the Clan together for Frostpaw's announcement. Splashtail sympathizes with his friend's worries about her decision.
With the Clan gathered, Frostpaw declares that their new leader is Owlnose. Owlnose is shocked to be chosen while his Clanmates murmur around him, though some are supportive. The brown tabby tom anxiously accepts his new role, and Frostpaw feels at ease when Duskfur and the other senior warriors approve of Owlnose. Mothwing prompts Owlnose to organize patrols, though he stumbles over ordering the cats around. Frostpaw speculates he's just nervous about his new responsibilities, and Splashtail later compliments her choice.
While Frostpaw sorts through their dilapidated herb storage, Mothwing encourages her apprentice to properly mourn Curlfeather's death now that there's time. However, Owlnose, Splashtail, and Sneezecloud hurriedly bring in Brackenpelt and Podlight, who fell into the river when the riverbank collapsed. While Mothwing and Frostpaw treat Brackenpelt and Podlight, the medicine cat questions why they didn't realize the riverbank was unstable. Owlnose attempts to explain, but Splashtail defends him since the Clan has been busy after Mistystar's and Reedwhisker's deaths. The new Clan leader agrees to send patrols to check all the shorelines, though fumbles over the specifics until Splashtail prompts him.
Frostpaw begins to question her decision when she overhears Duskfur and Gorseclaw gossiping about Owlnose's indecisiveness while sharing prey with Graypaw and Mistpaw. When Frostpaw heads back to the medicine cats' den, Duskfur approaches her to speak in private. She questions StarClan's guidance on their new leader and Curlfeather's exact words. Frostpaw explains her decision process and Duskfur is inclined to agree, though questions Curlfeather's indirectness since she was always direct. The senior warrior apologizes for questioning her kin's choice but hopes Owlnose will start acting like a proper leader soon. Frostpaw resolves that he'll feel better once he's received his nine lives, and she hopes the Clan will feel more at ease.
