Sunbeam and Gullswoop hunt early in the morning. Sunbeam is irritated at Gullswoop.
Sunbeam wants to be alone, but Gullswoop mentions Cloverfoot told them to stick together.
Assuming that Gullswoop wants gossip about Blazefire's rejection of her, she runs away from her Clanmate.
Gullswoop compliments how fast and graceful Sunbeam is, and Sunbeam snaps at Gullswoop, demanding she forget that she had ever liked Blazefire.
Gullswoop promises that she will get over him eventually, as Blazefire is not even a real ShadowClan cat, as he was not born in the Clan.
Sunbeam defends Blazefire, and Gullswoop assures her that there are more ShadowClan toms.
Even though she knows she can still be friends with him, she feels slight resentment towards Lightleap, who he is now close to.
Later, the two return to the camp, seeing only Fringewhisker and Cloverfoot in the clearing. It is raining.
Sunbeam wonders if Fringewhisker, a former SkyClan cat, is trying to prove that the weather does not bother her, noting how she seems determined to show her new Clan that she is just as good as everyone else.
Cloverfoot mentions that the nursery needed fresh bedding, and Fringewhisker happily offers to gather some. She and Yarrowleaf depart.
The deputy orders Gullswoop to take the starling to the medicine den for Blazefire, and for Sunbeam to take the mouse to the nursery.
Sunbeam angrily insists on taking the starling to Blazefire.
She becomes self-conscious once she finds herself in the den alone with Blazefire and tells him that Cloverfoot told her to bring him prey.
Sunbeam asks how his sprain is, and he responds it only hurts slightly.
Blazefire accuses her of keeping herself busy when she tells him of her early morning hunting patrol with Gullswoop.
Rowankit is very sick, and his parents are worried if his whitecough has turned to greencough.
Puddleshine enters and becomes worried after inspecting the kit. Shadowsight remarks about how little catmint they have, and Puddleshine says that the only patch on ShadowClan territory has died.
Puddleshine decides to go to SkyClan to ask Frecklewish for some catmint.
Sunbeam exits the medicine den, finding Lightleap in the clearing. She is anxious at her younger brother's condition.
Sunbeam thinks of reassuring her, but she decides against it.
He shows slight resentment to his clan for comparing him to Firestar.
Lionblaze snaps him to attention, reveling that the group had been talking with each other. Lionblaze scolds him for not paying attention.
Nightheart is paired with Lionblaze to hunt individually.
Nightheart resolves to catch a squirrel in the ancient oak after it was mentioned by Finleap and Plumstone, who agree to follow Nightheart and Lionblaze as far as the tree to the SkyClan border.
Nightheart spots a squirrel, when he suggests it, Lionblaze shoots down the idea, much to Nightheart's resentment. He reluctantly agrees.
Lionblaze and Nightheart continue past the ancient oak.
Nightheart finds another squirrel in a clearing, Lionblaze orders him to hunt only on the ground, Nightheart retorts that Lilyheart had taught him how to hunt in trees.
Lionblaze states he doesn't want to risk injury for one squirrel so close to leaf-bare. Nightheart doesn't listen.
Despite Nightheart displaying good technique, a bird shakes the branches of a tree above, startling the squirrel and making it run towards a tree. Nightheart follows.
Nightheart manages to catch the squirrel, but not without falling out of the tree.
The squirrel manages to escape while Nightheart saves himself by hanging onto a branch. He manages to land without injury.
Lionblaze is angered by his tree escapade. He and Nightheart argue over this for a moment. He calls to Finleap to come and help Nightheart back to camp to have a wound on his leg treated.
They worry that Brightheart's whitecough has developed into greencough. As well as mentioning they do not have much catmint.
Alderheart suggests sending another patrol out to the abandoned twoleg den to check the catmint plant. Jayfeather retorts that the last patrol had Blossomfall and Birchfall on it, and they could recognize catmint if they saw it.
It is revealed something ate the catmint bushes leaves, and that the bushes wouldn't recover before leaf-bare. They resolve to save the catmint for elders and kits.
Later that evening, Nightheart is in the clearing, assuming Lionblaze had told the whole clan about his squirrel drama. Resolving that he cannot let himself be seen as weak in front of the clan.
Nightheart finds a mouse on the fresh-kill pile, he looks towards Sparkpelt and Finchlight to eat with, but he is rejected by the two. Nightheart is shocked by this, but he sparks an argument with his mother and sister.
Sparkpelt retorts he rejected his family when he rejected his name. When told this was disrespectful, Nightheart asks to whom, to which he is told it is disrespectful to Firestar.
Sparkpelt and Nightheart argue over this, so much tot he point the rest of the camp overhears the argument.
Finchlight tells him he needs to find somewhere else to eat. Telling him he will give Sparkpelt indigestion if he stays much longer.
Myrtlebloom tries to tell him that they have a reason to be upset, reasoning that it was shocking to everyone, including his mother.
Nightheart does not see the point, Myrtlebloom points out how many warriors would give anything to be related to Firestar. And though Nightheart may not feel it is special, it would mean the world to another cat, and that he should take pride in the honor.
She also points out how he rejected the pride in front of the whole clan, causing the shock from his kin. She very politely calls him spoiled for this action. Nightheart is extremely shocked by this.
Nightheart retorts he was never spoiled, Myrtlebloom reminds him of his relation to Bramblestar and Squirrelflight. And how it can affect the way he is treated.
Nightheart confides that he does appreciate his kin, and says he does believe Firestar was a great leader, Myrtlebloom cuts him off and suggests he take the name Flameheart back, but Nightheart refuses, saying Nightheart is his real name.
Nightheart says no cat gets to decide who he is, only he can. When Myrtlebloom asks what kind of cat he wants to be, Nightheart doesn't know how to respond.
She remembers the dog attack that killed her, describing in detail the dogs and her mothers screeches. She feels guilt and terror over this.
She remembers Curlfeather's final words "Trust no cat".
Splashtail enters the medicine den, he gives a trout to Frostpaw, urging her to eat. Frostpaw denies it.
Splashtail insists, so does Frostpaw.
Frostpaw wishes him to go away. Splashtail mentions Mothwing's leadership position in the wake of Curlfeather's death.
Frostpaw accuses Splashtail of trying to make her feel guilty. Splashtail tells her she needs to get up, and be with her clan.
Splashtail promises to keep bringing her prey till she feels hungry again, Frostpaw feels almost grateful for him.
Mothwing is organizing patrols because no other cat wants to, even Duskfur, according to Frostpaw's confusion.
Frostpaw asks if Shimmerpelt or Icewing are taking charge, assuming they would want to. Splashtail agrees, mentioning Mallownose sounded like he may volunteer as well after Mistystar and Reedwhisker's deaths, but none ended up doing so.
Splashtail assumes maybe they are in shock after so many deaths at once.
Frostpaw muses that someone must have had the courage to take charge, Splashtail reminds her they lost not just a leader and deputy, meaning anyone who takes over has to handle all decisions, it would be a lot to take on at once.
Splashtail explains perhaps the obvious choice isn't always the right choice, Frostpaw ends the conversation when Mothwing enters the den.
Mothwing sends Splashtail away, telling him to go join Owlnose's patrol, explaining they need to keep the borders marked to keep the other clans none the wiser to the situation.
Mothwing tells Frostpaw she needs to eat, and get back into training, Frostpaw does not want to listen.
When asking if helping the clan would be more respectful than grieving her mother in the eyes of Curlfeather, Frostpaw doesn't answer.
Mothwing tells her she knows how she fells.
She explains Willowshine's death and how her death had destroyed her. Frostpaw does not agree that it is the same situation, a friend being lost compared to a mother being lost.
Mothwing explains at some point, life needs to return to normal.
Frostpaw snaps at Mothwing, telling her there is no normal in RiverClan anymore.
Frostpaw asks Mothwing why they should even try to return to a normal that doesn't exist anymore, Mothwing tells her because the clan is relying on them.
Mothwing says if she gives up, everything she, everything Curlfeather worked for would be wasted. Frostpaw doesn't see anything with these words.
Frostpaw asks Mothwing about the other clans, Mothwing denies her claims of asking for help. She cites when Bramblestar's body was taken by Ashfur, explaining how some cats turned on each other and hurt each other over it. Without proper leadership, RiverClan may fail.
She says they missed their chance to ask for help.
Frostpaw doubts the clan can fix itself. Mothwing insists they have to, they have no choice.
Mothwing urges Frostpaw to ask StarClan to see who the next leader should be, she is intense about this.
Frostpaw resolves she has no choice but to help. Mothwing feels apologetic for interrupting her grieving, but she needs to step up from now on.
She explains that Gorseclaw and Havenpelt almost started to fight over who was going to hunt in the water meadow, Mothwing says the clan is desperate for leadership or it will fall.
Frostpaw asks why Mothwing can't take charge, Mothwing states she cannot, she would rather heal than lead.
Mothwing tells Frostpaw she needs to go to the Moonpool. Frostpaw is dreaded by this.
Mothwing shows sympathy for Curlfeathers death, but she cites she has to go to see StarClan.
Frostpaw agrees, knowing she cannot refuse. But she remembers her mothers last words. She finds no cunning in Mothwing's eyes to retort that she had ill intent.
Frostpaw shows fear, but Mothwing tells her this cannot wait.
Mothwing leaves, leaving Frostpaw to her own thoughts.
