"The longer this quest takes, the more time I’ll have to set myself straight...and try to figure out how to move on in a world without Bristlefrost."

"Oh, we couldn't do that! I mean, thanks and all that, but we can't be tied down."
— Slate turning down Ivypool's offer in Ivypool's Heart, page 85

Slate is a wiry black-and-white tom[2] with a bushy tail.[3]

Ivypool's Heart[]

Dovewing, Icewing, Ivypool, Rootspring, and Whistlepaw see a rabbit and chase after it. However, two cats appear out of nowhere, also trying to catch the rabbit. Ivypool barrels into one of them, letting the rabbit get away. After she gets a better look at them, she guesses by their similar frames that they are littermates, and probably not kittypets. Slate apologizes and hopes that they did not hurt her, which she assures him that they have not. When Rootspring says they are just passing through and do not want to bother them, Slate says they are not a bother, and love meeting friends. He introduces himself and his brother, Beach, and Icewing introduces herself and the rest of the patrol.
Dovewing asks if they are associated with the kittypets that the patrol met earlier, but Slate responds that they do not hang around anyone else, living their best life connecting with the earth. Beach adds that they also hunt and chat with she-cats, before eyeing the gray she-cat. Ivypool thinks they are too young to be flirting with she-cats, and asks how old they are if their mother knows where they are. Beach responds that they are old enough to be out on their own, and in fact their mother says it was time. Slate adds that the group of cats they grew up with were she-cats that connected to the spirit world, and Rootspring recognizes that they are from the Sisters, which the black-and-white tom confirms.
After Rootspring explains his father's backstory and their quest, Dovewing interjects that the weather is holding them back and that they cannot figure out the direction they should be traveling. Slate sympathizes and his brother offers help and shelter at their camp. They also offer food, and Icewing apologizes for the rabbit. However, Slate says there will be others, and offers to connect to the earth for them. At their den, there is rotting crow-food, stale bedding, and debris all over. While Ivypool is put off by this, she also remarks that they are at an age where this is normal.
Slate and Beach run off to hunt, and Dovewing expresses doubt that they will be able to help, but Rootspring disagrees. The brother return with a rabbit, with Slate saying hunting is not hard when you know where to look. Ivypool then asks what they do with leftover prey, and they say they do not do anything. Dovewing then tells them they need to take it out of camp and bury it, or else they will get rats and crows. Upon hearing this, Slate says they saw a rat the other day, and Beach says they ate it. Ivypool tells them not to do that, as rats carry disease. She and her sister instruct them on what to do with prey and bedding.
They suggest cleaning up the crow-food, and Slate asks if they have to. The gray-and-white she-cat says they do not have to do anything they say, but it is better to clean it up and get into the habit of cleaning. Dovewing adds an incentive: she-cats they bring back will be more comfortable. She asks them what is attractive in a mate, and Slate responds with a bushy tail, twitching his own bushy tail. However, she says that what is attractive is someone that can clean up after himself. Thus, Beach and Slate begin cleaning up their den. After they are done, Whistlepaw asks about Beach's wound, and he explains that they went too near the Twopaws' place and got into a fight with a dog. Slate proudly says they chased it off though. Although Beach tries to shrug off his wound, Whistlepaw says it needs to be treated, which she can do because she is a medicine cat. When Slate asks what that is, she explains.
Whistlepaw finishes treating the tabby tom's wound, and both brothers try their paw at flirting with her. This is to no avail, as she informs them that she is a medicine cat and thus cannot take mates. She still gives them advice on flirting, as do the other she-cats in the patrol. Ivypool then invites them to come back with them once they finish their quest and join a Clan, with Rootspring offering an incentive by way of she-cats, but Slate declines, saying they do not want to be tied down. She still gives them the opportunity nonetheless.
Icewing then asks them to connect to the earth. Beach tries first, but fails. Slate does not give up hope and says that if he climbs in a bush, he can tap into the roots and connect that way. He then dashes for a bush, wrapping his paws around a branch and closing his eyes, but he also fails. The tom climbs out of the bush with a thorn in his paw, which Whistlepaw pulls out. She asks what to do next, and he says put horsetail on it, which she gives him to do himself. Though Beach suggests summoning spirits like the Sisters, Ivypool knows they need more help, and asks the brothers if there is anyone else that could help them. Slate says they can take them to the Sisters, who would be happy to help.
The next morning, the two toms, begin leading them to the Sisters, but are interrupted by the two dogs that attacked the Clan patrol earlier, who start chasing them. The big brindled one catches Slate by the scruff and shakes him vigorously, and he cannot reach it with his claws. Ivypool launches herself at the dog, sending Slate flying into the air. After the dogs are gone, Whistlepaw and Beach check on the tom. He says he’s fine but he is shivering and his eyes are wide with shock. The medicine cat comments that he has nasty wounds on his neck and needs treatment. While Slate tries to convince them he is fine, no one is buying it. Rootspring suggests they get going in case the dogs and kittypets come back. He asks Slate if he can continue and the tom assures him he can. Whistlepaw notes that it is good because the Sisters can treat his wounds.
They continue traveling, with Whistlepaw and Dovewing flanking Slate in case he falls. On the way, the gray tabby finds thyme and gives it to Slate for his shock. He eats it, and Ivypool notes that he is impressed by the she-cat for her expertise. They finally reach the Sisters, and both Slate and Beach joyously greet them, with Slate announcing they have caught mice. Snow thanks them for the mice and suggests taking them to their mother in the nursery. When they are surprised, she says Flurry has given birth to three new kits, two she-cats and a tom. The brothers race off to see her. Whistlepaw then tells Snow that Slate is wounded and should not be running around like that, but Snow assures her that they will take care of him.
When Snow announces the ceremony to honor Bristlefrost's and Graystripe's spirits, the brothers join them. During the ceremony, Ivypool becomes distraught and leaves. As she does, she thinks to herself how stupid it was of her to suggest that the toms return with her, as if she is trying to replace Bristlefrost with them. She knows that they are not hers and can never be replacements for her lost kit.
When Rootspring is arguing with Snow, he mentions that they abandon their toms when they are too young to fend for themselves, using Slate and Beach as an example.

Quotes[]

"We don't hang around with anyone else. We're littermates, and we live alone. You know, two toms living our best life. Connecting with the earth."
―Slate commenting on his and his brother's lifestyle Ivypool's Heart, page 74

Slate: "You see, the group of cats we grew up with, they're all she-cats. They connect to the spirit world, and the toms, they connect—"
Rootspring: "Great StarClan! Are you from the Sisters?"
Slate: "Yes."
—Slate explaining where he and his brother came from Ivypool's Heart, page 75

Beach: "You know, Whistlepaw, you have beautiful fur. It's very . . . tabby."
Slate: "Great tail, too."
—The brothers failing at flirting with Whistlepaw Ivypool's Heart, page 84

Appearances[]

Notes[]

  1. Beach and Slate are both stated to be around the age of Clan apprentices when they first appear.[2] This would make them at least six moons old. However, they cannot be over six moons old, as six moons prior to Ivypool's Heart are the final books of The Broken Code. They do not appear in any of the three books that all feature the Sisters, including their mother, Flurry. This means they would then have to have been born very shortly after, placing their births in greenleaf.
