"If you break that promise, then I'll teach Darkkit to hate you, and to hate all the Clans. Think about that, Onewhisker!"
— Smoke to Onewhisker in Onestar's Confession, page 178

Smoke is a long-furred[4] gray she-cat with fluffy,[5] soft fur[2] and big,[6] blue eyes.[2]

Smoke was a kittypet who lived in the Twolegplace near the forest territories. As a young kittypet, Smoke befriended Onepaw, a WindClan apprentice, and admired his stories about his heroism and bravery as a warrior. Smoke and Onewhisker shared a close bond and Smoke secretly hoped Onewhisker would decide to live with her in her Twoleg nest so they could be together. However, as WindClan began to starve from poisoned rabbits and Onewhisker became mates with Whitetail, Onewhisker broke ties with Smoke. Smoke soon realized she was expecting kits and after informing Onewhisker, Smoke gave birth alone on the moor to their litter, though only their son Darkkit survived. Smoke requested for their son to join WindClan after the death of her Twoleg, though Onewhisker casted them aside, fearful of his Clan learning the truth. Smoke vowed to teach their son to hate the Clans if Onewhisker didn't return. Smoke and Darkkit found new Twolegs to live with, though Darktail's harsh behavior forced them to live as strays so they wouldn't be separated. Smoke was killed on the Thunderpath by a monster, sending her son on a quest of vengeance against his father for leaving them.

In the A Vision of Shadows arc[]

Shattered Sky[]

After moons of Darktail causing trouble to the Clans, Onestar tells the Clans about his connection to Darktail. As a warrior, Onewhisker would go visit kittypets and brag about his Clan life. Smoke loved Onewhisker's stories about Clan life, and she was really happy being mates with the WindClan warrior. Everything was good until Smoke revealed she was expecting kits. She went to find Onewhisker on the moor near the border of WindClan's territory, nearly ready to give birth; Smoke wanted to join WindClan so her kits could be brought up as warriors. Onestar explains that he would have been in terrible trouble for being mates with Smoke, and the tom knew that if Tallstar did let her stay she would realize that Onestar was just an ordinary warrior, not the hero he told Smoke he was.
Squirrelflight asks Onestar if he sent Smoke home and he confirms he did. Onestar told Smoke to go back to the safety of her Twolegs, declaring their relationship over. Smoke argued for a while but eventually left. However, Smoke came to find Onewhisker one last time with her and Onewhisker's kit. She explained that while she was still on her way home after her last meeting with the warrior, she gave birth and only one of her kits survived. She begged him to at least take their kit while he was young enough to learn the Clan's ways, but Onestar refused. Enraged, Smoke told Onewhisker that she would raise the kit to hate the Clans that had rejected him. Bramblestar realizes that Smoke and Onestar's kit is none other than Darktail, which the WindClan leader confirms as true. Onestar says that he comforted himself by telling himself he was protecting Smoke and their kit, believing whatever she had said in her anger, he was sure she would take Darktail back to become a kittypet and their lives would be better that way.

Onestar's Confession[]

"We don't have to have different lives. You can't want to live out on that nasty moor forever! My housefolk would welcome you. Haven't you had enough of adventures? Wouldn't you rather live a comfortable life? Look at Bailey and Melody! They came back."
―Smoke to Onewhisker about their future Onestar's Confession, page 112
While exploring the Twolegplace with Brushpaw, Tansypaw, and Morningpaw, Onepaw spots Smoke through a gap in the fence playing with a toy. While the apprentices are later scolded for venturing in the Twolegplace, Onepaw hopes he can meet the pretty gray she-cat again. Two moons later, Onepaw and the other apprentices frequently venture into the Twolegplace and befriend the local kittypets, including Smoke. Smoke asks Onepaw to hear another one of his stories and Onepaw dives into a tale of how he and Brushpaw helped their mentors chase off a ferocious ShadowClan patrol. Though the story is mainly fictious, Onepaw enjoys Smoke's admiration of his bravery. Smoke asks for another story, but Onepaw and Brushpaw have to leave to return to their Clan.
After Brushpaw's death, Onewhisker walks Bailey back to her Twoleg den. Smoke waits for them outside and she comforts Onewhisker when he brings news of their friend's death. Onewhisker is grateful for her understanding. Several moons later, Onewhisker decides to search the Twolegplace after Crowpaw disappeared. Onewhisker finds Smoke with Melody, Dudley, Nutmeg, and some other kittypets and they request another story from him. Onewhisker tells them a story how he fought off a fox, though omits how the fox was old and sick. Smoke and the others promise to keep an eye out for Crowpaw. After sharing some cat treats with Dudley and the others, Smoke walks Onewhisker back to his territory.
After Onewhisker and Whitetail fall in love, he decides to visit Smoke and break ties with her, knowing he must dedicate himself to his Clan since they are struggling with poisoned prey killing so many cats. Smoke argues that he should live with her housefolk, away from the harsh life of a warrior, and that they are in love. Onewhisker relents that he did have feelings for her, but his Clan needs him. Smoke angrily hisses for him to leave and never return. However, Smoke soon learns she is expecting Onewhisker's kits and attempts to visit WindClan's camp to find Onewhisker but is repeatedly chased off by WindClan's patrols. Two days later, Tornear informs Onewhisker in private how Smoke asked to speak with him, though he cautions Onewhisker to figure out his own problems. Tornear covers for Onewhisker so he can sneak out of camp to speak with Smoke.
Onewhisker finds Smoke near a Thunderpath and Smoke reveals she is expecting his kits. Onewhisker is pleased for her and promises to do what he can for her. Smoke asks for their kits to join WindClan out of fear her housefolk might take their kits away but Onewhisker firmly insists WindClan is currently starving. However, he omits how he worries how his current mate Whitetail will react if she found out. After Onewhisker leaves, Smoke attempts to follow him but she soon gives birth alone in the moor. Only one kit survives the birth. Smoke takes her son back to her housefolk and they dote over the tiny kit. Onewhisker visits a few days later and discovers Smoke nursing their son in her yard. Smoke explains what happened on the moor and once again asks for their son to join WindClan, but Onewhisker again dismisses her request due to Twolegs destroying their camp and encroaching on their land.
The night before the the Clans are forced to leave the forest on the Great Journey, Smoke and their son visit Onewhisker on the moor, both thin and slightly sickly. Smoke explains how her housefolk died so she and her son ran away to avoid being separated by animal control. Smoke once again asks to join WindClan for a better life for her and their son, adding that she named their son Darkkit so he would fit into the Clan. Onewhisker again refuses, citing how Brushpaw died despite his training, how the Clans are preparing to leave, how the coming journey will be dangerous, though omits his worries about Whitetail and his Clanmates learning the truth. As Darkkit angrily glares at his father, Onewhisker leaves briefly to fetch dock to treat Darkkit's injured paw. When he returns, he spots Smoke glaring at Whitetail down in their temporary camp. In disbelief that Onewhisker is abandoning her and their son to be with Whitetail and his Clan, Smoke threatens to wake up the entire Clan, but Onewhisker shoves her aside, accidentally sending her crashing into Darkkit. As Onewhisker panickily apologizes, he promises that he'll come back after the Clans settle in their new camp. Smoke doesn't believe him and forces him to keep his promise, explaining how she'll teach their son to hate the Clans if he doesn't come back. Onewhisker insists he will, though knows that he probably will never come back.
At the Clans' new home, Ashfoot reveals to Onewhisker how she met Smoke before the Clans left. Ashfoot explains how Smoke had said she's had a kit with Onewhisker. Onewhisker implores his deputy to not tell Whitetail, and while Ashfoot promises to keep his secret, she knows this secret will leave the new leader vulnerable. At some point, Smoke and Darkkit lived with a new Twoleg, and Darkkit renamed himself Darktail. However, Darktail grew up to be cruel and harsh and lashed out at their Twoleg's kit. Smoke, realizing the trouble her son was in, took him away from their housefolk and lived as strays. Smoke and Darktail struggled for food, though Darktail frequently picked fights with the friendly kittypets who shared their food. While crossing a Thunderpath, Smoke was struck and killed by a monster. Darktail disappeared not long after from the Twolegplace.
Seasons later, after the battle against the stoats, Onestar decides to check in on Smoke and Darkkit, feeling guilty how he abandoned them. He finds two kittypets and while Snowflake isn't familiar with Smoke, she recognizes Darkkit as the mean cat who killed Dudley. She takes him to Melody, who elaborates on Smoke and Darktail's story after Onestar left the forest. Onestar grieves for Smoke's death and how he missed her admiration. Melody goes on to explain how Smoke's Twoleg found her body and buried her in her garden. Onestar follows Melody to Smoke's grave underneath a tree with bright red leaves. Onestar apologizes at Smoke's grave for abandoning her though ponders where their son is.
Darktail eventually leads his Kin to destroy the Clans. When Onestar prompts what Darktail wants, he asks for his mother to come back, blaming his father for her death. Onestar's guilt about Smoke's death and Darktail's destruction over the Clans manifests into a nightmare. Onestar dreams of Smoke back at her former Twoleg nest and he apologizes for everything he's done to her. Smoke insists he has to help, though her words fade off before she can reveal who. After Darktail raids WindClan's camp, Onestar finally reveals to the other Clans the truth about Darktail and Smoke.

Quotes[]

Smoke: "It's so good to see you! I've so much to tell you! [...] I caught a mouse in the Twoleg den today. I can't show you, because one of my housefolk took it away before I'd finished with it. But I felt so fierce and capable—just like a warrior! I've saved you some food, and I can't wait to hear about your latest adventures."
Onewhisker: "Smoke, listen. I've loved being your friend. Our time together has been really special for me. But it has to end. It had to end now."
Smoke: "Onewhisker? You—you can't mean that!"
Onewhisker: "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. But yes, I do mean it."
Smoke: "But it wasn't just friendship! We're in love!"
Onewhisker: "Yes, I did have...feelings for you. But you have to see that our lives just don't mix. We can't be together, it's not fair to either of us."
Smoke: "We don't have to have different lives. You can't want to live out on that nasty moor forever! My housefolk would welcome you. Haven't you had enough of adventures? Wouldn't you rather live a comfortable life? Look at Bailey and Melody! They came back."
Onewhisker: "I'm sorry, Smoke. Truly sorry. But this is good-bye then."
Smoke: "Good-bye, then! But if you change your mind, don't even think about sneaking back!"
—Onewhisker breaking ties from Smoke Onestar's Confession, pages 111-113

"He's the only one of my litter who survived. After we last spoke, I chased after you and got disorientated on the moor. I started having terrible pains and lay down in the grass, and I gave birth right there. I had no one to help me, even my housefolk. So [Darkkit's] everything to me. I hate the feeling of Twolegs taking him from me."
―Smoke about Darkkit's birth Onestar's Confession, page 130

Smoke: "So this is it. You're leaving with the Clans—with her—and you'll never see me or your kit again? Well, I won't let that happen. I'll wake the whole Clan and tell them the secret you've been hiding all this time!"
Onewhisker: "[...] I'm sorry! This is just how it has to be, but once we find our new camp, I'll come back. I'll find you in the Twolegplace."
Smoke: "I'll believe that when I see it. Onewhisker, you have to promise me that you won't forget us. Your kit needs you."
Onewhisker: "I promise."
Smoke: "If you break that promise, then I'll teach Darkkit to hate you, and to hate all the Clans. Think about that, Onewhisker!"
Onewhisker: "I've said I promise."
—Onewhisker turning his back on Smoke and Darkkit with a false promise Onestar's Confession, pages 177-178

«She'll never know that I kept my promise, because I'm too late. She said she'd believed I'd come back when she saw it, and now she never will.»
—Onestar about Smoke's death Onestar's Confession, page 301

Onestar: "There was this one kittypet...a young cat she-cat called Smoke. She had such soft, gray fur, and such brilliant blue eyes...it was like I was staring into pools of pure water!"
Squirrelflight: "I see."
Onestar: "Smoke and I became...more than friends. She loved to hear my stories of Clan life; she couldn’t get enough of them. She was happy to be my mate, but of course I only ever saw her in the Twolegplace. There was no way I could have brought her into camp. […] Everything was fine, until I found out that Smoke was expecting kits. She came to find me on the moor. Thank StarClan that I was out hunting alone, and I came across her not too far from the border of our territory! Smoke was almost ready to give birth. She told me that she wanted to join WindClan, so that her kits could be brought up as warriors. You see, I’d told her such wonderful tales of Clan life, as if it was all adventure and massive piles of prey. I had not mentioned all the times we nearly starved to death in a harsh leaf-bare, or how often we might get terrorized by dogs or Twolegs...or how heart-breaking it was to lose a Clanmate."
Violetpaw: "What did you say to her?"
Onestar: "What could I say to her? I knew there was no way I could bring a kittypet into WindClan. I would have been in terrible trouble for mating with her in the first place, and even worse, I knew that if Tallstar did let Smoke stay, she would have seen me as I really was. Just an ordinary warrior, not the heroic cat I had made myself out to be. And anyway, Smoke was so soft and delicate…. She would never have survived a moon out on the moor."
Squirrelflight: "So you sent her home?"
Onestar: "I sent her home. I told her to go back to her Twolegs, where she would be safe. Her relationship with me was over. She argued for a while, but at last she left, and I told myself I’d had a lucky escape. I stayed away from the Twolegplace after that, and I never expected to hear from Smoke again."
Bramblestar: "But you did."
Onestar: "Yes, Smoke came to find me one more time. She had a single kit with her, and she told me that after our last meeting, when she was still on her way home, her kits had come. She didn’t have any help—not from a cat, not even from a Twoleg. All but one of her kits—our kits – had died. Smoke went back to her Twolegs, but only for a short time. As soon as her kit was old enough to leave her, she brought him back to me. She begged me to at least take him into camp, while he was still young enough to learn the ways of the Clans. And I...I refused. I was too worried about how I would have to explain to Tallstar. Smoke turned on me then. She told me that she would raise the kit by herself, and teach him to hate the Clans who had rejected him."
Bramblestar: "Wait. This kit—are you saying that he grew up to be Darktail? That Darktail is your son?"
Onestar: "I tried to tell myself that I was protecting Smoke and her kit. I thought that whatever she said when she was angry, she would take him and go back to being a kittypet, and their lives would be better that way."
