«Earth watched as Snail and Chestnut walked down the hill and out of sight. They didn't look back. They were hurrying, eager for whatever came next.»

Sunrise stops Earth from taking prey from the hole, saying that Snail and Chestnut get first choice. Earth thinks gloomily that they start their wander that night, leaving The Sisters to find their own path.

That night, Snail and his brother follow Hawk up the hill, steps light and tails high, as if anticipating their wander. The Sisters begin their ritual for sending toms away, with Moonlight touching her nose to the brothers' ears in turn, followed by the Sisters each giving their own goodbyes. Hawk presses her face to both her sons, eyes closed as if memorising their scents. When it's Earth's turn, he remembers how Snail and Chestnut were only a couple moons older than him, and had organised the games they played and raids on the prey-hole.

Awkwardly wishing them luck, Earth says that they might meet each other on their wanders someday. Chestnut non committedly says they might, seeming to look past Earth down the hill before exchanging an excited glance with Snail, as Earth notes the brothers seem like they can't wait to start their wander. Moonlight dips her head to the two toms, telling them to listen to the land and act as its guardian, and go with their love. Snail and Chestnut nod, and Moonlight completes the ritual. Walking down the hill, they don't look back, hurrying as they start their walk through the night.
