"What's the point of ancestors who only turn up when it suits them?"
— Snaptooth about StarClan in Graystripe's Vow, page 36

Snaptooth is a golden tabby tom.[2]

Snaptooth is a kittypet, and a former ThunderClan warrior who served under Bramblestar's, the impostor's, and Squirrelflight's leaderships in the lake territories. He was born to Cinderheart and Lionblaze as Snapkit along with his siblings Flykit and Spotkit, and has three older siblings; Fernsong, Hollytuft and Sorrelstripe. He was renamed Snappaw and apprenticed to the young warrior, Finleap. Afterwards, he became a warrior named Snaptooth. Snaptooth left ThunderClan with Graystripe, Flywhisker, Flipclaw, and Thornclaw to go on a wander, and he ultimately decided to leave his birth Clan and become a kittypet with Flywhisker.

History[]

In the A Vision of Shadows arc[]

River of Fire[]

Twigpaw makes the journey back to ThunderClan with Finpaw, and Sparkpelt leads them to the camp. When the two young cats enter, Twigpaw sees her old Clanmates again, her gaze passing over Cinderheart, and Blossomfall. As they sit at the nursery's entrance, their kits frisk around their paws, play, and wrestle. A short time later, sickness begins to fall on ThunderClan. Alderheart is worried about Snapkit and his siblings, since they have started venturing out of the nursery. He recalls how keen they are to exploring, but imagines what strength they might need to ward off sicknesses.
As the medicine cats herd cats to the nursery, Alderheart sees Cinderheart with her kits, Blossomfall, and Ivypool. Blossomfall tells Briarlight, her sister, and one of the sick cats, that the kits can help with her exercise, and they hurtle themselves at the brown she-cat excitedly. Daisy stops them with her tail, and the small cats scramble over her; the cream she-cat warns them to be gentle.
A storm breaks out overhead ThunderClan's camp, with rain and lightning. Alderheart swiftly goes to the nursery, and as he enters, the ginger tabby gazes at Cinderheart, sheltering Snapkit, Flykit, and Spotkit from the cold. Blossomfall asks where they should go, and Alderheart suggests the elders' den, since Graystripe and Millie will be happy to see kits. The medicine cat sends the two queens with their kits to the warmer den, and races away back to the medicine den.
Alderheart wonders what might happen if the current raging sickness gets passed on to Cinderheart or Blossomfall's litters, but Cinderheart spent the night with Snapkit and his siblings in the elders' den. Alderheart ends up heading back to the nursery, having remembered Ivypool giving birth, and meets the silver-and-white she-cat's litter fondly. After a quick checkup, the young tom moves on to Cinderheart and her kits.
He notes that Snapkit, Flykit, and Spotkit are much older and bigger then Thriftkit, Bristlekit, and Flipkit. Cinderheart begs Alderheart not to disturb her sleeping son and daughters, as, according to the queen, they don't sleep much. Despite this, the gray she-cat strokes her resting kits affectionately, adding that she wouldn't want them any other way. Daisy says that Cinderheart's kits will be apprenticed quickly, and Alderheart agrees.
Sometime after, Dovewing, a former ThunderClan cat who left and joined ShadowClan, comes back from disappearing with Tigerstar. Alderheart recalls the gray she-cat eagerly listening to the news about Cinderheart and Ivypool's new litters.

The Raging Storm[]

"He's fun. He can be slow, but he listens and he works hard. He's going to make a good warrior."
―Finleap on Snappaw The Raging Storm, chapter 5
Snappaw is now an apprentice with Finleap as his mentor. Twigbranch sees him helping Finleap move a branch to the edge of the training clearing. She comments how Snappaw isn't complaining, unlike his sister. Snappaw drops the stick, saying that Finleap told him moving sticks would make him strong, and he meows that he wants to be the strongest apprentice in ThunderClan. He pricks his ears when Finleap suggests they battle train, and rushes to join Flypaw, who crouches and bares her teeth.
Snappaw has his belly flat to the ground and hisses at Flypaw, while she hisses back, and Finleap steps between them, saying they won't win any battles by making faces. Snappaw mews they were being fierce. While Twigbranch stalks Flypaw to see how she does in an ambush, the apprentice watches her brother and Finleap train. When they're finished, Finleap praises Flypaw, but Twigbranch cautions that she still has a lot to learn. Snappaw weaves around his sister, meowing that they both have loads to learn, and that Finleap taught him how to dive under a cat's belly. He tells Twigbranch she should teach Flypaw how to do it, and goes on to say Finleap said he's a natural.
After he and Flypaw finish clearing the rest of the sticks, they check the ShadowClan border, where they find Puddleshine trapped beneath a bundle of silverthorn. Snappaw and Flypaw fetch help back at camp.
Twigbranch asks Finleap if he gets along with Snappaw. Finleap says that his apprentice is fun and going to be a great warrior, even if he is slow at times.
Twigbranch notices that Finleap did not come back to camp after training Snappaw. Snappaw tells her that Finleap had something he wanted to do before returning to camp.
Flypaw tells Twigbranch that Snappaw was supposed to do battle training with Finleap, but his mentor was not in his nest. When Flypaw and Twigbranch see Finleap again with the SkyClan patrol, the apprentice tells him that Snappaw was looking for him. Snappaw and Spotpaw are seen trying to look over the heads of their Clanmates when the patrol arrives at camp. Cinderheart wonders why Finleap was with the patrol when he was supposed to be training Snappaw.
Snappaw, Flypaw, and Eaglepaw chat at the back of the Gathering patrol. Flypaw hopes the other Clan apprentices will be at the gathering, and Snappaw says to wait until they see the battle skills the two apprentices have learned. When Flypaw spots the other apprentices, she takes off, with Snappaw following her. Snappaw is seen showing Dapplepaw a hunting crouch.
Snappaw and Finleap are practicing battle moves at the training ground as Twigbranch and Flypaw go hunting.

Lost Stars[]

"Lazy furballs! Let's show them the rabbit and make them feel really ashamed of themselves."
―Snaptooth to Bristlefrost when they catch Berrynose and Mousewhisker not hunting Lost Stars, page 199
Snaptooth is in a patrol with Berrynose, Mousewhisker and Bristlefrost. He helps Bristlefrost catch a rabbit and after Bristlefrost makes the kill, he praises the catch and suggests showing it to Berrynose and Mousewhisker. Upon finding out where they were, they notice they aren't hunting and Snaptooth calls them lazy. Snaptooth eventually accidently sneezes, giving away the fact that they were spying. The two older cats praise Bristlefrost, to which she responds saying Snaptooth helped, and he ducks his head, pleased.

The Silent Thaw[]

Snaptooth plays moss-ball with Flipclaw and Dewnose while waiting for Squirrelflight to order patrols. When she and Bramblestar appear, Snaptooth, Dewnose and Flipclaw offer to hunt.

Veil of Shadows[]

Snaptooth is summoned by Berrynose alongside Dewnose and Sorrelstripe to help Bramblestar when he is ambushed by the rebels.

Darkness Within[]

Bristlefrost: "Flipclaw you don't mean that!"
Snaptooth: "Maybe he does. And maybe I agree with him."
Squirrelflight: "Then maybe you both should go."
—Snaptooth advocating to go on a wander Darkness Within, page 69
Snaptooth attends the vigil for the fallen warriors. Later, he, Flywhisker and Flipclaw listen in with interest on Thornclaw's argument with Lionblaze; the older warrior questions the current status of ThunderClan's leadership, with Squirrelflight and Lionblaze as acting leader and deputy respectively. When the Clan discussion moves onto StarClan, Snaptooth accuses StarClan of only showing up when it suits them and they did nothing to warn the Clans about Ashfur. When Flipclaw decides to go on a wander, Snaptooth agrees with him and decides to join him, along with Flywhisker, Thornclaw and Graystripe. Squirrelflight asks if they plan on coming back, but the group is unsure. She gives them her consent, but warns them they will no longer be ThunderClan cats if they don't return within a moon. Their Clanmates are silent as Snaptooth and the others leave the camp. Later, Bristlefrost despairs how ThunderClan has changed since Snaptooth and the others have left.

The Place of No Stars[]

Flipclaw brings back the terrible news of Snaptooth and Flywhisker being kittypets. Hollytuft calls the pair traitors, causing Cinderheart, Snaptooth and Flywhisker's mother, to defend her kits.

In the Super Editions[]

Squirrelflight's Hope[]

After completing his training, Snappaw earns his warrior name of Snaptooth.

Graystripe's Vow[]

"Would you ever want to have kits with Flipclaw? Be honest with him. He's looking at you like a fox looks at a rabbit!"
―Snaptooth to Flywhisker about Flipclaw Graystripe's Vow, page 64
Snaptooth, Flywhisker, and Thriftear rest beneath the Highledge when Squirrelflight comes bounding down and asks them to go on a hunting patrol as the fresh-kill pile is low. However, Snaptooth and the other younger warriors ignore her, with Snaptooth yawning. Eventually, Squirrelflight's glare gets them to begrudgingly oblige, and Graystripe questions why Thornclaw, who was watching the incident nearby, did not say anything to support Squirrelflight's order. Later, Thornclaw and Lionblaze get into a heated argument about ThunderClan's leadership and its apparent nepotism, as Squirrelflight and Lionblaze are both kin of Firestar and Bramblestar. Snaptooth, Bristlefrost, Sorrelstripe, Flywhisker, and several other warriors surround the two older warriors to watch. He questions the point of listening to StarClan if they are silent, and agrees with Flipclaw about going on a wander away from ThunderClan along with Thornclaw, Flywhisker and Graystripe. His father, Lionblaze, begs for them to not act hastily, but Snaptooth insists they are not. Squirrelflight allows them to leave, but with the condition of one moon to return if they wish to remain within the Clan.
The group agrees to hunt before leaving Clan territory, but Snaptooth lets slip that they plan on leaving the Clans to a passing SkyClan patrol. While Hawkwing casually wishes them well, Graystripe and Thornclaw scold the younger warrior for slipping. The group splits up to hunt, with Snaptooth and Flywhisker bringing back a thrush and blackbird respectively. When Flipclaw hints at his feelings for Flywhisker, Snaptooth bluntly asks his littermate if she plans on having kits with him and she explains she does not wish to have kits at the moment. Flipclaw quietly suggests that maybe she would feel differently about him one day, but Flywhisker firmly denies his attempts at romance, and Snaptooth snorts in amusement. When Flywhisker reveals that she is interested in becoming a kittypet, Snaptooth is surprised at first, but angry that his sister would give up her freedom. Before the two littermates can argue further, Thornclaw abruptly leaves the group to wander on his own. Graystripe tells the younger cats that they must each decide where to go, with Graystripe wishing to go to the mountains with the Tribe of Rushing Water. Snaptooth and Flywhisker follow Graystripe and Flipclaw for a short bit before the two littermates part ways.

In the Novellas[]

Spotfur's Rebellion[]

"He's our leader. I'm a loyal warrior, and you should be too."
―Snaptooth to Spotfur when she talks about Bramblestar Spotfur's Rebellion, chapter 7
When Bramblestar makes the choice to evacuate ThunderClan's camp due to a potential flood, Snappaw presses himself against his sister, Spotpaw, shivering as they make their way through cold water. Spotpaw runs her tail along Snappaw's back, and tries to assure him that things will be okay and that they, and ThunderClan, will be safe. Despite the fear in Snappaw's gaze, he relaxes his shoulders and joins ThunderClan on their way to a temporary camp. Soon after, Spotpaw sees him returning to ThunderClan's temporary camp alongside Birchfall and Finleap, with mice hanging from their jaws. Spotpaw raises her tail in greetings to her littermate, welcoming him back to camp.
Snappaw, now called Snaptooth, waits for Spotpaw, now named Spotfur, outside of Alderheart's den. The golden tabby tom, alongside Stemleaf, asks Spotfur how Bramblestar is doing due to his illness. Spotfur tells them that Bramblestar has become a tad strange, scary, and saying that the ThunderClan leader felt like he was lost and had no idea where he was. Snaptooth says that sickness can make them feel bizarre, recalling a time when he was ill and that he thought he was an eagle. Spotfur is hesitent to laugh and purr, still concerned for her leader, but Snaptooth assures her that Bramblestar will be fine and that there is nothing to worry about. Snaptooth later talks to Spotfur when they see Squirrelflight leaving camp to go and see Bramblestar on the moorland. Snaptooth tries to be encouraging, saying that perhaps Bramblestar has finally recovered from his illness. Despite his encouraging words, Snaptooth, alongside Spotfur and Stemleaf, later sits vigil for Bramblestar. The leader was mistakenly killed while sick by the ShadowClan medicine cat apprentice, Shadowpaw.
After Spotfur serves her punishment by a newly revived Bramblestar, Snaptooth is thrilled to be able to talk to his sister again. He mews that things can finally go back to normal, after the she-cat had been forbidden to talk to any of her Clanmates, or any other cat, for a brief period of time. They are joined by Flywhisker, who is just as thrilled to be able to talk to Spotfur again. Spotfur, very concerned about how Bramblestar has been acting, finally decides to talk to Snaptooth and Flywhisker about her concerns. She explains that she does not think Bramblestar has been acting normal, and Snaptooth does not agree with what Spotfur is saying and fiercely defends his leader. He protests and says that StarClan gave Bramblestar nine lives to lead ThunderClan with. He goes on to say that he is a loyal warrior, and that Spotfur should be as well. Flywhisker frets about Spotfur's words as well, worrying that if they turn on Bramblestar, StarClan would never return to the lake. They plead with Spotfur not to do anything, saying that it sounds like she is trying to rebel against Bramblestar and ThunderClan. Snaptooth narrows his eyes and looks at Spotfur, wondering if she was not like this because Bramblestar punished her. Spotfur denies this, and although Snaptooth and Flywhisker do not believe her, they still act like siblings and want to race Spotfur to the oak tree.
During one of the many fights with the rebel group and Bramblestar's cats, Snaptooth joins in the fight alongside Sorrelstripe, Berrynose, Dewnose, and Bristlefrost. Spotfur panics, worrying that Bristlefrost has turned against the rebels by bringing Snaptooth and the others. Despite this, Kitescratch urges the rebels to flee, saying that there was no way they could help their fallen friends. Spotfur looks and sees three bodies on the ground, that of Dappletuft, Conefoot, and Stemleaf. They turn away from Snaptooth and the others, fleeing from the fight.

Daisy's Kin[]

Daisy recalls that Snaptooth had been one of the cats who had left ThunderClan on a wander. She wonders if she should have gone with Snaptooth and the others that day.

Trivia[]

Interesting facts[]

  • Snaptooth has WindClan blood through Crowfeather.[59]
  • During the scene where Thornclaw and Lionblaze argue about ThunderClan's leadership, which occurs in both Graystripe's Vow and Darkness Within, one of Snaptooth's lines is edited in Graystripe's Vow to avoid revealing the identity of the impostor; Snaptooth asks, "What's the point of ancestors who only turn up when it suits them?" in the aforementioned book.[60] However, in Darkness Within, Snaptooth asks, "What's the point of ancestors who only turn up when it suits them? They could have saved us a lot of trouble if they'd warned us that Ashfur had come back."[61] This was mostly likely done to withhold revealing the true identity of the impostor for the release of Darkness Within, which was released two months after the release of Graystripe's Vow.[note 1]

Mistakes[]

  • His name is misspelled as "Snapptooth" in the allegiances for Squirrelflight's Hope. [64]
