Snow Tail is born to Kite alongside his littermates, Trout Fur and Willow Stream, just as their mother finds River Ripple's group, wanting to join so her kits could grow up in a safe place. Later, River Ripple watches Trout Fur, Snow Tail, and Willow Stream play with the older kits, Drizzle and Pine. River Ripple and Night discuss potential trainers for the five kits, with Night suggesting Croak for Snow Tail to help encourage him. Two days later, River Ripple guides the five kits over the frozen river to explore after Snow Tail and Drizzle snuck out of camp on their own. Snow Tail asks River Ripple why Drizzle didn't change her name like her family, and the leader explains that she prefers being named Drizzle. When Thunder and Clear Sky arrive, River Ripple instructs Drizzle and Pine Needle to take the younger kits back to camp.

Moons later, Snow Tail fishes with Kite Wing and Croak. After Arc's arrival, Night encourages Riverstar to get his mind off things by patrolling with Snow Tail and Croak since the young cat enjoys it when the Clan leader is around to watch his training. While staying with the Cats of the Park, Riverstar wonders how Snow Tail's training is going and if he is becoming more confident. When Riverstar and Drizzle return from their journey, Shattered Ice points out how the Clan has built a den just for the young apprentices to sleep in. Snow Tail later shares tongues with his littermates while Kite Wing chats with Finch. Later, Riverstar performs apprentice ceremonies for Snow Tail and his littermates, officially naming Croak as his mentor. Snow Tail is nervous to attend his first Gathering, and he later practice battle moves with Dawn Mist.

Riverstar: You three kits were the first to be born into RiverClan. We are stronger for having you, and I hope that one day you will have kits in your turn and make RiverClan stronger still. You've been sleeping in the apprentices' den for a while, and Croak, Dawn Mist, and Moss Tail has been training you. But it's time we acknowledge it formally. From tonight, Croak will be Snow Tail's mentor, Dawn Mist will be Trout Fur's, and Moss Tail will be Willow Stream's. I hope that, very soon, you will become warriors too.
