"Softpelt fought for the impostor, not against him."
Icewing to Rootspring and Harelight about Softpelt in Darkness Within, page 44

Softpelt is a dark[9] gray she-cat.[6]

Softpelt was a RiverClan warrior under Mistystar's leadership in the lake territories. She was born as Softkit to to Lakeheart and Lizardtail alongside her littermates, Dapplekit, Harekit, and Gorsekit. She was apprenticed as Softpaw to Mintfur, and when RiverClan's camp was caught on fire, Softpaw was rescued by a ThunderClan apprentice, Twigpaw. After becoming a warrior, Softpelt mentored Splashpaw. During a battle instigated by the impostor, Softpelt was killed, and became a ghost, unable to find StarClan. Ashfur imprisoned her ghost in the Dark Forest.

History

In the A Vision of Shadows arc

The Apprentice's Quest

During a Gathering, Softkit and her siblings are mentioned by Mistystar to have been born to Lakeheart as healthy kits.

Darkest Night

Softpaw is now an apprentice, along with her siblings, with Mintfur as her mentor.

River of Fire

"Softpaw and Havenpelt ought to have another dose now, but I think I'll have to delay it until sunhigh."
―Willowshine's thoughts on Softpaw and Havenpelt River of Fire, page 3, Bonus scene
When RiverClan is escaping from the fire from their camp, Mistystar is hesitant to leave any cat behind. However, she sees the sense in evacuating the area because it's unsafe. As she begins to gather her cats together, they hear a desperate yowl coming from the other side of the stream. Twigpaw spots a RiverClan apprentice tottering towards the bank and gasps when she sees her pelt is completely away on one side. The apprentice attempts to reach the log to cross the stream, but by now the fire has reached the far end of it. As the flames leap up in her face, the she-cat yowls for help, because she can't get on the log.
A horrified RiverClan cat shrieks out Softpaw's name, and Twigpaw darts back across the log. The ThunderClan she-cat jumps across the flames at the far end, her paws landing on hot ash. Twigpaw approaches Softpaw, who is crouching in front of her with her eyes closed and ears flattened. The ThunderClan she-cat reassures her that she'll get out and grabs the young cat by the scruff. Twigpaw carries her to the burning end of the log and swings her backward. This momentum launches Softpaw high above the flames, and she lets out a squeal of alarm. Softpaw lands on the log, her paws skidding on the slick surface. Twigpaw cringes, expecting her to fall into the stream, but the apprentice regains her balance and scurries across the log. Shimmerpelt and Mistystar meet her on the other side, covering her ears with licks.
Later, Alderheart mentions how Twigpaw had saved Softpaw, and Violetshine is surprised, stating that's great. She turns and looks at the RiverClan apprentice crouching by the stream, noting that she's battered, but out of danger. She notices that Softpaw gazes at Twigpaw, her eyes full of gratitude.
In the bonus scene, Softpaw is one of the cats who have become ill from a vomiting sickness. Willowshine thinks that she and Havenpelt need another dose of watermint, but will have to delay it until sunhigh. Curled under a thorn tree in moss filled nests, Softpaw keeps moving around in her sleep as if she's having a nightmare, moaning in pain. After Willowshine has a vision of the RiverClan camp burning, she returns to the real world, hearing only the gray apprentice's groans of pain instead of fire.
The day after as Willowshine worries about the supplies of watermint, she notes that while Havenpelt has recovered, both Curlfeather and Softpaw are still in their nests in the medicine cats' den.

The Raging Storm

"RiverClan is well. Softpaw got caught in a strong current that carried her close to the rapids. Dapplepaw managed to drag her out in time, but she swallowed a lot of water."
―Willowshine describing how Dapplepaw saved his sister The Raging Storm, page chapter 13
At the medicine cat half-moon meeting, Willowshine reports that all is well, save for one incident. She notes that Softpaw almost got carried away by the rapids, but was saved by her brother, Dapplepaw.

In The Broken Code arc

The Silent Thaw

Softpelt has now become the mentor of Splashpaw.

Veil of Shadows

"[…] Dappletuft's kin huddled together at the back of the crowd; every one of them looked ashamed and miserable."
―Dappletuft's kin when his treachery is revealed Veil of Shadows, page 220
Her brother, Dappletuft, is killed during a failed attempt on the impostor's life. Mistystar announces at a Gathering that they buried Dappletuft like a rogue without a vigil, and Softpelt and her kin mourn quietly. Later, after a devastating battle between the Clans, Softpelt is killed. Rootspring spots the ghosts of those who died lurking at the Gathering, where they are unable to find StarClan.

Darkness Within

"We can ask no more of our warriors than that. We come to honor those who gave their lives to defend the way of life they believed in."
―Leafstar about the fallen warriors at Gathering Darkness Within, page 45
Softpelt's apprentice, Splashpaw, is now mentored by Minnowtail. During a Gathering, Softpelt is mentioned by her brother, Harelight, as he is glad that Mistystar sent some RiverClan cats to the Gathering; he thinks that it would be good to honor Softpelt. Rootspring reassures the new ShadowClan warriors, Icewing and Harelight, that Mistystar let Softpelt's kin come to the Gathering. Icewing growls, stating that Softpelt fought for the impostor, not against him, and Harelight mournfully said that he would have been there for both Softpelt and Dappletuft, whatever happened. Squirrelflight starts the Gathering, letting the Clan cats mourn for the cats who had died in the previous battle, holding a small vigil for them.

The Place of No Stars

Mothwing advises Willowshine to call on Softpelt's spirit to guide her into the Dark Forest. However, Willowshine dies, and Mothwing blames herself, fearing that Ashfur may have intercepted Willowshine's call to Softpelt to kill her. Softpelt's spirit is one of the many trapped in the Dark Forest and under Ashfur's control.

Quotes

"Help me! I can't get on!"
―Softpaw when the log catches fire River of Fire, page 170

"Mistystar had to send some cat so she wouldn't offend the other Clans. And to honor Softpelt."
―Harelight about his sister when RiverClan comes to the Gathering Darkness Within, page 170

Harelight: "[Mistystar] might forgive us eventually and ask us back too?"
Rootspring: "Mistystar let Softpelt's kin come to the vigil. That's close to forgiveness, isn't it?"
Icewing: "Softpelt fought for the impostor, not against him. Do you suppose [Mistystar] would have let them come if Dappletuft had been the only warrior to die?"
Harelight: "I would have been here for them both, whatever happened."
—Harelight, Rootspring, and Icewing discussing Mistystar and the fallen RiverClan warriors Darkness Within, page 44
