- Splashnose is an ancient ShadowClan queen. Since ShadowClan's camp is so wet, she must lick the mud out of Driftkit's and Fallowkit's belly fur almost everyday.
- Splashnose sends the kits outside to go play. Without her knowing, Driftkit plays with the last piece of prey on the fresh-kill pile, a mouse, making it unfit to eat. Sunnytail, the ShadowClan deputy, reports this to Splashnose angrily. She responds calmly, trying to tell her they didn't know it was the last piece. Lilystar overhears, and scolds Driftkit. Splashnose tries to spare her son from the Clan leader's harsh words, but Lilystar silences her with a flick of her tail.
- Suddenly, an owl swoops down, and Splashnose screeches in alarm. Driftkit is too terrified to move, staring at the white bird, waiting for the movement of being swept into the air. The cats run, but the owl is already aiming for Driftkit. Then, instead of taking him, it takes the mouse at his paws. Splashnose runs to him as soon as the owl flies away, and she fusses over him, asking if he's alright, and calls him precious. Driftkit shrugs away from his mother, thinking that fierce warriors didn't get fussed over every time they won a battle, so her son mutters he's fine.
