- Leafshade asks Spotpaw what she can smell, and she replies the stream and WindClan. When asked from her mentor where the borders are, Spotpaw is unsure, so Leafshade and Rosepetal explain to not get too close and how the rain has made the markers more faint. Leafshade turns and tries to scent out the markers, making Spotpaw impatient. She moves closer to Stempaw, wanting to be noticed by him, and asks how they could get closer to WindClan's border. Spotpaw explains that since the markers aren't fresh, it's WindClan's fault and it wouldn't be their fault if they cross them.
- However, Spotpaw turns around and Leafshade criticizes her for joking around, and how apprentices shouldn't be messing around over border issues. She tells her she needs to show respect to her and the other Clans, and informs how Darktail took over ShadowClan because the apprentices weren't being respectful, angering Spotpaw. Rosepetal tells Leafshade to not be too hard on Spotpaw, as they don't know what the time when Darktail was alive was about, but Leafshade growls the apprentices would have to completely depend on them for training. Spotpaw sarcastically acts like Leafshade, and is glad when Stempaw laughs.
- Spotpaw brings mice to Millie and Graystripe, and then goes to get a sparrow for herself. She gives some to Stempaw, who comments Spotpaw was very brave in wanting to go near the WindClan border, to her joy. Spotpaw admits all along she did know where the markers were, but she was pretending she didn't. When asked about being rebellious, Spotpaw shrugs it off, feeling thrilled that Stempaw thinks about her that way. She looks around and sees the camp busy, enough so that no one would notice their conversation. Stempaw comments that Leafshade was concerned about apprentices rebelling against their mentors that she mentioned Darktail, and Spotpaw assures him that she wouldn't be fooled if someone like Darktail came. Stempaw scoffs that Spotpaw wouldn't be able to take him down, but she says that she is brave, like when she neared WindClan's border. However, a voice tells them they are mouse brains, and that they are too young to fight rogues. Spotpaw recognizes Shellpaw, and says she is tougher than him. Bumblestripe tells her that she shouldn't be rebellious against her mentor, to be a noble warrior. He and Shellpaw leave camp, making Spotpaw furious.
- Spotpaw felt another idea come into her head, and asks Stempaw to come follow them, telling him it would be fun to look at Shellpaw’s training, and that it wouldn’t be spying. Stempaw agrees, thinking they are both sneaky. Checking their mentors aren’t watching, the pair sniff out Bumblestripe and Shellpaw’s scent, following it out into the forest and ignoring prey on the way. Spotpaw stops when she hears Bumblestripe’s voice, who was teaching Shellpaw how to leap. She steps on a leaf and it crunches, but neither Bumblestripe nor Shellpaw notice her. Spotpaw growls that Bumblestripe isn’t very attentive after all, and Stempaw agrees, commenting he should learn to be a better warrior.
- She moves forward, deciding to teach Bumblestripe a lesson, and Stempaw tries to stop her. However, she is already moving forwards, thinking about what Leafshade has taught her on sneaking up and stalking prey. Spotpaw tries to get Stempaw to see how good she really is, even though she is barely an apprentice. Thinking she would leap for Bumblestripe’s back with claws sheathed, she begins to run forwards and leaps up. However, she sees gray fur flash before her eyes, and Bumblestripe grips her and slams her onto the ground, teeth showing and claws looming over her deadly. Spotpaw cries that it’s only her, and that she was only playing.
