- The cold of leaf-bare makes Spotfur shiver. One shrew remains on the fresh-kill pile. Squirrelflight tells Thornclaw, Lilyheart, and Spotfur to go on a border patrol and mark the border with ShadowClan. Lilyheart says that she is starving and asks if her patrol can wait until the hunting patrol comes back with some fresh-kill, and Squirrelflight agrees that she'll send out more hunting patrols. The hunting patrol comes back, with lots of fresh-kill. Stemleaf heads toward her, and Bristlepaw eagerly bounds in front of him. Spotfur wonders if she was like that when she was an apprentice. The gray apprentice asks Stemleaf how he caught the squirrel. Stemleaf says that Rosepetal was a great mentor, and that Clanmates work together. Bristlepaw’s ears prick with excitement as Stemleaf shows her how he caught the bushy squirrel. Thornclaw calls for Spotfur, who follows him out of the camp.
- At the warriors' den, Stemleaf asks if it will always stay like this, and Spotfur reassures him that StarClan will guide them. Stemleaf says that they will come back, once the Moonpool melts. The two warriors exchange worried glances, and the she-cat tells herself that StarClan would never abandon them. Spotfur hears Dewnose scolding his apprentice, Thriftpaw. Alderheart tells Dewnose that it was an accident. Thriftpaw responds that she just wanted to help Baykit. Alderheart tells Thriftpaw never to give a kit herbs, and Dewnose comments that she also ruined the supply of marigold. Alderheart offers to take Thriftpaw outside so they can search for some marigold the next day, but Dewnose says that she must go now, and by herself. The apprentice agrees, saying that she wants to make it right.
- The spotted warrior walks back and forth, watching the entrance restlessly. Thriftpaw was still not back. She tells herself that Dewnose made a mistake sending Thriftpaw to find the marigold on her own. Stemleaf reassures her, though Spotfur can tell that he did not believe what he was saying. The she-cat goes to Dewnose, and tells him that they have to find Thriftpaw. The tom reluctantly agrees, and Stemleaf comes too. Honeyfur, who was listening, tells Spotfur and Dewnose that she is coming as well. The four warriors head towards the lakeshore. They start yowling Thriftpaw’s name, but there is no reply. Dewnose blames himself, and Spotfur stubbornly says that they will find her. The warriors call for Thriftpaw again, and there is still no reply. Stemleaf points out that they knew the route that Thriftpaw would have taken. Spotfur agrees, and says that the group needs to retrace her paw steps. The warriors turn around and start heading toward camp.
- Spotfur decides that she won't give up. The she-cat thinks for some time, then asks what Thriftpaw would do if she couldn't get home, and replies to her own comment that she'd want to find somewhere safe. Stemleaf asks where she would go that felt safe. Spotfur responds, saying that she would probably want to go somewhere like a den, or someplace sheltered. The warrior thinks about the fallen tree, where the apprentices learn fighting skills. She suspects that Thriftpaw is there. The warrior shares her thought with the rest of the group, who all consider the idea. When the warriors get there and yowl Thriftpaw's name yet again, and there is a response.
- Back at camp, Jayfeather scolds Thriftpaw and her mentor, and Spotfur and Stemleaf talk about the incident. They decide to talk to Bramblestar about what happened. The discussion goes well. Spotfur thanks Bramblestar, and pads out of his den with Stemleaf, remarking that they work very well together.
