"I was waiting, but then I realized Bramblestar wouldn't want us to wait. If bad things are going to happen, I want you beside me. And if good things are going to happen, I still want you beside me. No cat knows what's coming, but we never do. I don't want to wait any longer."

Chapter description[]

Although the sun is shining again, the leaf-bare is still extremely cold. Squirrelflight asks Twigbranch to take a patrol to the abandoned Twoleg nest. The gray she-cat asks Bristlefrost to come with her. However, Bristlefrost says that she has a thorn in her bedding that she needs to get out. Spotfur is curious, as Bristlefrost is always enthusiastic to help her Clan. Spotfur turns to Stemleaf, who averts her gaze. Twigbranch asks Stormcloud if he would like to go with her, and he agrees.
Stemleaf is about to volunteer to go as well, but Spotfur stops him, and asks if he knows what is up with Bristlefrost. Stemleaf hesitantly answers that she is unhappy because of him. Spotfur is confused. Stemleaf looks awkward, and tells Spotfur that Bristlefrost had told him that she had feelings for him, and asked if they could be mates. Spotfur's stomach drops, and the tom says that he told Bristlefrost he couldn't be her mate because he already knew which cat he wanted. Stemleaf looks at Spotfur, and then away again. She is surprised, and asks Stemleaf if he meant her. Stemleaf blinks at her, and confesses his love for her, who agrees and says that she loves Stemleaf as well. The two cats stare at each other, and Stemleaf takes a step forward, pressing his cheek against Spotfur's. A cat calls for her to go on a hunting patrol, and Spotfur tells Stemleaf that she has to go.
The patrol returns with only a few voles and sparrows. Spotfur drops her catch on the fresh-kill pile, and sees Bristlefrost, who is curled up next to Rosepetal. She thinks to herself that she isn't sorry that Stemleaf loves her, but is sorry that it hurt Bristlefrost. Spotfur sees Stemleaf padding out of the warriors' den, and forgets Bristlefrost for a moment. Before Spotfur can speak to Stemleaf, Squirrelflight, who is talking with Jayfeather, tells her to give Bramblestar some fresh-kill in the medicine den. Spotfur obeys, and asks if he's sick. Squirrelflight tells her that he isn't well. The spotted she-cat takes a vole from the fresh-kill pile, and starts to pad over to the medicine den. Before she can get there, Stemleaf starts walking beside her. The warrior informs her that while Bramblestar was leading the hunting patrol, he was acting strangely and suddenly fainted.
In the medicine den, Alderheart sits next to his father anxiously. He looks up when Spotfur enters, and asks her if Squirrelflight sent her. The spotted she-cat nods, and steps a little closer to Bramblestar's nest. She asks if Bramblestar is awake, and when Alderheart doesn't reply, she feels Bramblestar's body. The leader is burning with fever. The ThunderClan leader raises his head, and he angrily asks Spotfur why she was there. The warrior answers that she brought fresh-kill. Bramblestar asks if it is poisoned, and Spotfur denies it, her fur bristling. Bramblestar makes her prove it by tasting it herself. Spotfur obeys, and takes a small bite of the prey. The warm flesh fills her mouth, and she passes it to Bramblestar, who apologizes and says that he keeps forgetting where he is. Alderheart tells Spotfur to leave the medicine den, and she does. Stemleaf and Snaptooth ask what happened, and Spotfur tells them. Snaptooth dismissively says that sickness makes every cat strange, and what happened to Bramblestar was regular. He adds that he once thought he could fly, but Spotfur thinks to herself that her brother never acted differently. Stemleaf asks if she's okay, and she insists that she is not overreacting. The tom tells her that she is not, but the leader will be alright.
Bramblestar becomes even sicker, and now is completely motionless and unresponsive. Flywhisker and Spotfur are both worried, and she thinks to herself that Squirrelflight is barely holding the Clan together. The next day, the leader does not wake, and Alderheart tells her that he still has a fever. Her heart sinks, and the Clan waits anxiously in the camp. Stemleaf then approaches her, and meows that he wants Spotfur to be his mate. She blinks, and the toms tells her that he does not want to wait anymore, and he wants her with him no matter what happens. She realizes that Stemleaf is right, and answers that she feels the same way.
At sunset, Tigerstar and Shadowpaw come into the camp saying that the medicine cat apprentice had a vision. They claim that they should leave Bramblestar in the snow, but Spotfur is doubtful. Squirrelflight rejects this, but ThunderClan is in a bad situation and the medicine cats have tried everything. Alderheart argues that it is the only thing left to try, and Jayfeather snarls but after a Gathering where Shadowpaw has another vision, the Clan consents. Finleap, Molewhisker, and the medicine cats carry the leader out of camp, but Finleap is worried. Spotfur says that Shadowpaw must be right, as he has no reason to lie. She still fears that he may be wrong, and Molewhisker feels like it will be his fault if the leader dies. Stemleaf meows that it is not anybody's fault. The Clan is awake the entire night, and the deputy slips out of the camp. She returns during the day, and in a strained voice, states that the leader is dead.
Past sunhigh, four warriors bring Bramblestar's body back as the Clan watches, a few yowling with grief. Spotfur stares bleakly at his body, and she helplessly thinks that she could've done something. Shadowpaw must have been wrong, and StarClan had abandoned them. After sunset, ThunderClan gathers for a vigil, and those who knew Bramblestar best say that he was brave and a good leader. Spotfur barely hears what is being said and is instead in disbelief. The youngest warriors then speak of their memories with the leader, and she meows that he listened to her, despite her inexperience. The vigil ends, but Bramblestar suddenly moves. She thinks to herself that it must have been the wind, as there should only be a short period between two lives. However, Bramblestar moves again, and then raises his head and blinks. The Clan is stunned but also joyful, as the leader is alive.
