- Spotfur yowls to her siblings, happy to hear her own voice again after her quarter moon of silence, although Lionblaze had not returned from his exile yet. Snaptooth and Flywhisker look at her warmly, and her sister says they should look for mice. Spotfur purrs that she is glad she can talk again, and Snaptooth answers that everything would go back to normal. The spotted she-cat tenses and thinks about how she and Stemleaf had decided to speak to cats about how Bramblestar was acting. She hesitantly begins, and asks them if they think how their leader acted was normal. Snaptooth asks what she means, and and she describes how he is angry, obsessed with the code, and that her and Stemleaf had decided to get cats to stand up to him. Her littermates look at her in horror, and her brother argues that StarClan gave Bramblestar nine lives, and Flywhisker adds that if they turned against their leader, StarClan would never come back. She asks them if they would follow their leader no matter what, and Snaptooth answers that he is loyal, and she should be too. She replies that sometimes it could mean standing up to their leader. Flywhisker urges her not to and asks if she remembers what they had heard about Darktail and ShadowClan, and it was because they were not loyal. Spotfur replies that she thought Bramblestar was breaking the code, but Flywhisker disagrees. The golden tabby tom asks if it was all because she was punished, and Spotfur objects, wondering why they did not believe her. Her littermates then run off, leaving her wondering if another cat might listen.
- Later, Spotfur and Stemleaf find Thriftear, and Spotfur asks if they could talk to her. She thinks to herself that the Clan looked fine, even though they seemed subdued. Thriftear is afraid, and asks what they wanted to say. They whisper their concerns, and Stemleaf asks if she agrees that they should work together to make ThunderClan back to how it used to be. The Clan the she-cat agrees, but then looks at them and asks if this was so that they could report her to the ThunderClan leader. Spotfur is shocked, but then sees Bristlefrost watching them. She then realizes that even the pale gray she-cat's littermates were not safe. Spotfur thinks that while they are unable to trust Bristlefrost, they are not capable of hating her either. Thriftear murmurs that they are not able to change anything, and Spotfur and Stemleaf answer that they can, even though they do not know how.
- At the lakeshore, Spotfur explains to Twigbranch and Finleap that many of them do not agree with Bramblestar's actions. Twigbranch looks miserable, saying that she switched Clans, but she had never been disloyal. Spotfur purrs in sympathy, and the gray she-cat wails that they named her as a codebreaker, and Spotfur thinks about Shadowsight receiving the list of cats. Stemleaf muses that the list seemed strange, and Finleap replies that Bramblestar was taking it seriously. Spotfur thinks about how smug the leader looked when forcing them to swear their oath and when he exiled cats. Stemleaf reminds them of Lionblaze's exile and how Sparkpelt was punished. Spotfur shivers, and adds that he didn't even care when Sparkpelt got attacked. Finleap worries if he will be exiled next, and Twigbranch says that Leafstar would not take her back. Finleap comforts her, and Spotfur answers that ThunderClan was falling apart, and soon other leaders would follow him. Stemleaf adds that they are going to meet with others and form a plan, and asks them if they were with him and Spotfur.
