“Well, if Bramblestar weren't yowling about punishment all the time, the Clans could find a better way to deal with the codebreakers. Bramblestar is trying to make us act like Darktail's Kin. He wants us to turn on one another. But warriors aren't cruel. They never have been. Bramblestar must have bees in his brain. We have to get rid of him before he spoils the Clans forever.”

Chapter description[]

Spotfur and Stemleaf had spoken to some cats privately for a few days, and invited them to a secret meeting at the greenleaf Twolegplace. She thinks to herself that she did not expect so many cats to come, as many who had spoken up still seemed doubtful. However, cats from every Clan had arrived, including Frecklewish, Twigbranch, Breezepelt, Rootpaw, Tree, and many others. They look wary, and Spotfur is nervous. She thanks them for coming, and says that it is important they are here. Breezepelt questions if they can stop what is happening, and Whorlpelt adds that nothing would be happening without Bramblestar. Sneezecloud agrees with them, but Frecklewish says that he seems to have StarClan's support, and cold shoots through Spotfur. She hears twigs crackling, but does not see anybody. Rootpaw meows that perhaps StarClan does not want the codebreakers to suffer as much as Bramblestar made them, and Spotfur says that not everyone knew what they did wrong. The cats begin to argue, and she winces at the noise. Stemleaf breaks in, and states that without Bramblestar, the Clans could find a better way to deal with codebreakers. He continues that the leader is trying to make them act like the Kin, and they must get rid of him.
There is a silence, and Spotfur wonders how the Clan would be without Bramblestar, and the other cats begin arguing about whether it is possible. Finleap meows that the old Bramblestar would never be like this, and Rootpaw suggests that perhaps something happened when he was dead. The spotted she-cat is confused, and Tree steps forward, stating that something occurred when the leader was dead, and the cat that returned is not Bramblestar. Stemleaf asks what he means, and he explains that he saw and spoke to the leader's ghost. Everyone is confused, and Frecklewish begins to argue. The yellow tom replies that the current ThunderClan leader is an imposter that's using his body while the real ghost is stranded. Spotfur is horrified, and thinks about how terrible it is to be unrecognized and to have an intruder using his voice. The others argue about whether it may be Shadowsight, but she thinks that he would not do something so evil. Cloverfoot meows that the medicine cat would not do anything dishonest, and Spotfur hears another crack of twigs. Stemleaf announces they would find out more about Shadowsight's visions, and the cats begin to leave.
The bushes suddenly rustle, and Spotfur sees Bristlefrost's blue-green eyes. Twigbranch screeches for them to run, as the she-cat would report them. Heart pounding, Spotfur thinks to herself that she would be exiled, but Bristlefrost declares that she came to join them. The others are uneasy, and Spotfur wonders if she is lying. The pale gray she-cat tells her that she knows they want to get rid of the leader. Her eyes are pleading, and Spotfur wonders if she still has feelings for Stemleaf, and asks how she found out about the meeting. Bristlefrost answers that she heard Spotfur and Stemleaf talking, and Spotfur snaps that she is spying. She then feels annoyed and guilty, and Bristlefrost desperately explains. Rootpaw states that they are going to ask Shadowsight about his visions, and Bristlefrost sadly mews they would need more powerful cats. She continues that there is another ThunderClan she-cat who already suspects, and Spotfur is confused. She states that it is Squirrelflight. Rootpaw and Tree explain that the deputy already suspects the truth and Bramblestar's ghost had sent a message through Tree. Bristlefrost says they must do something, for the impostor tried to kill Sparkpelt. Somebody had lured dogs there, and she suspects that it is of Bramblestar's doing. Spotfur now feels more hopeful, as the deputy must act.
A moon later, things are even worse. Stemleaf whispers that perhaps killing Bramblestar is the only way, and Spotfur hisses that they can't talk about it in camp. Squirrelflight, Lionblaze, Jayfeather, Twigbranch, Crowfeather, and Mothwing are hiding in the abandoned SkyClan camp. The deputy had tried to persuade the other leaders, but only Tigerstar is willing to fight. The ShadowClan leader believes Shadowsight had been murdered by the imposter. Spotfur asks if the leader's body is killed, there may be a a chance for him to take it back, but Stemleaf does not know. The entire Clan is distraught, and Bristlefrost is upset as she enters camp. Cinderheart asks if she is alright, and Stemleaf whispers she was out with Bramblestar. They had been searching for Squirrelflight, and the leader enters the camp, dirty and unkempt. He states that Squirrelflight was killed on the Thunderpath, and begins to wail. The Clan is sad and shocked, and Bristlefrost whispers to her and Stemleaf that she was actually still alive. She realizes that it is a smart plan but cannot help feeling sorry for the leader.
A few days later, the rebels meet again and find out that Shadowsight has been found badly injured, but alive. Tree tells them that Bramblestar may have lied, or even attacked the medicine cat. The cats argue if he would really murder someone, and Stemleaf murmurs that the leader would. Crowfeather yowls that they must kill Bramblestar, but Squirrelflight pleads for them to wait until Shadowsight is conscious. She realizes that the deputy will never kill his body, no matter who is in it. Stemleaf tells the the ginger she-cat that she is right, but Spotfur knows he is lying. As they leave the meeting, Spotfur asks why he agreed with Squirrelflight. He answers that it will never be official, because Squirrelflight cannot bear losing the last connection to her mate. She realizes the tom is right, and they must make a plan.
A few days later, they are ready. Spotfur is afraid, and Stemleaf asks if StarClan will come back if they kill the leader. She answers that she doesn't know, and she thinks to herself that all she wanted was for the Clan to be united, and to be a good warrior. She wonders what kind of Clanmate would attack their leader, but them realizes that he is not her leader. The she-cat says that it is the only way, and tomorrow, everything would change. They curl together that night in one nest.
