Chapter description[]
- Spotfur looks at the cats and ask if they know the plan. She shivers in the rain but also from fear. Conefoot grimly answers that Spotfur and Stemleaf would convince Bramblestar out of camp, and then they would attack. Dappletuft and Kitescratch are uneasy, and the she-cat says that although Mistystar would be angry, it was the right thing to do. Spotfur meets Stemleaf's gaze, and she thinks to herself that they would be driven out. For a moment, she feels sad but then thinks that someday the others would understand their intent. The spotted she-cat pads through the territory, and she quietly asks Stemleaf if they would lose their home if they succeed. The tom shakes his head and says that one day the other Clans would understand, and they would raise kits in ThunderClan. Spotfur imagines the future, and warmth rises inside of her.
- As they get closer to the camp, Stemleaf asks where they should hide, but Conefoot tells them to be quiet. They hear Bramblestar talking to Bristlefrost about Berrynose. She looks through the branches and sees the leader looming over the young she-cat. Spotfur beckons the others forward, and Bristlefrost gasps as sees her. Bramblestar turns around, and Spotfur screeches to attack. She claws at the leader but is kicked away, and Dappletuft swipes at Bramblestar's throat. The dark brown tom tells Bristlefrost to get help, and she runs away. The five cats fight Bramblestar, and the leader slashes at Dappletuft's chest. The RiverClan warrior gives a soundless wail, and the other cats redouble their attack. Spotfur's mind is full of bloodthirsty joy as she fights the impostor and thinks to herself that they would have their leader back.
- Spotfur hears an angry yowl, and she realizes a patrol has come. She is pinned by Shellfur, whose green eyes are furious until he sees something else. She stands up, and Stemleaf is on the ground as Bramblestar's paws slash his throat. Spotfur wants Stemleaf to get up, but he is motionless. She notices that Conefoot was down too, and Spotfur leaps at the impostor's throat. More warriors run at them, Bristlefrost in the lead. Kitescratch yowls that it's over, and when Spotfur sees Stemleaf's body in silence, the tom shoves her. He says that they could not help anymore, and she draws in a breath then runs away with Kitescratch.
