Bumblestripe scolds Spotpaw and tells Leafshade and Rosepetal about what happened.
Stempaw tries to defend her, but Bumblestripe tells him that it was his fault too.
Bumblestripe accuses Rosepetal and Leafshade of not paying enough attention, and Spotpaw tries to defend them, but Leafshade cuts her off.
Rosepetal and Leafshade decide on their punishments, and they also decide to train them separately.
Lionblaze and Cinderheart tell her that it is more important to be loyal than to be alert, and Bumblestripe could have seriously hurt her and if he did, he would be distrusted by the Clan.
Spotpaw admits that they are right, and Cinderheart says that a warrior must think before they act.
Lionblaze explains that disloyalty within ShadowClan was what caused Darktail's takeover, and Cinderheart says that Spotpaw can serve as a good example for the kits.
Spotpaw promises to do her best.
Spotpaw is doing her apprentice duties, and Leafshade is no longer angry.
Bristlekit and Thriftkit are curious about her duties, and Bristlekit wants to be like her when she becomes an apprentice.
She visits Bramblestar to clean out his den, and he starts to talk about his apprentice days and having Firestar as his mentor.
Spotpaw admires how even Bramblestar looks up to others and tries to improve, and thinks that her parents were right about how she must be a good example.
Squirrelflight organizes a patrol, and Spotfur notices how Bristlefrost does not display her usual enthusiasm.
Spotfur stops Stemleaf, and he hesitantly explains that Bristlefrost asked him to become mates. Looking at Spotfur, and continues that he said no.
Stemleaf confesses his love for her, and Spotfur reciprocates his feelings. The two cats press muzzles, and Spotfur soon leaves for a patrol.
When they return, Squirrelflight tells Spotfur to give Bramblestar some fresh-kill in the medicine den.
Stemlaf informs her that Bramblestar was acting strangely and suddenly fainted.
In the medicine den, the leader burns with fever. Bramblestar makes Spotfur confirm that the prey is not poisoned, but his anger soon falls away, and he apologizes, looking lost.
Spotfur tells Stemleaf and Snaptooth about Bramblestar, and Stemleaf shares her concerns, but Snaptooth says that the leader is fine.
As Bramblestar does not get better, Stemleaf asks Spotfur to be his mate, saying that he does not want to wait anymore; Spotfur accepts.
Tigerstar and Shadowpaw arrive claiming that Shadowpaw was told to leave Bramblestar in the snow to cure him.
Although the Clan is doubtful, they agree, as there is nothing left to try.
The next day, Squirrelflight returns, announcing that Bramblestar died.
Four warriors later bear his body back to camp, and Spotfur feels helpless, as StarClan may have abandoned them.
ThunderClan later holds a vigil for the leader, and as the vigil ends, Bramblestar suddenly moves. To their disbelief, the leader is alive.
The camp is sunny, and prey is plentiful. However, Spotfur is anxious as Bramblestar enters, since the leader has been behaving erratically.
Bramblestar asks why Lilyheart did not catch prey and accuses her of not following the code.
Despite others’ protests, the leader says that Lilyheart will sleep alone on the moor.
Spotfur convinces her parents to go on a patrol with her, and she is frustrated that they are not worried.
Cinderheart and Lionblaze tell her that they must give Bramblestar some time first.
It is raining, and Spotfur recalls how Bramblestar had announced that he and Squirrelflight would eat first.
When Lionblaze says that thanking StarClan is useless since they may not be listening anymore, Bristlefrost cuts in that they might be waiting for the Clans to follow the code.
The two cats stare at each other, and Spotfur and Lionblaze then chase a rabbit.
However, Bristlefrost says that they were on WindClan territory, and Lionblaze argues with her.
Bramblestar is furious when they return, and he and Lionblaze angrily argue.
Spotfur cuts in that many cats have broken the code before, including Squirrelflight, who lied about Leafpool’s kits.
She listens in shock as Bramblestar announces that she cannot talk for a quarter moon, and Lionblaze will be exiled for that length of time.
A few days later, Stemleaf and Spotfur whisper to each other that the punishments are not right, and they must do something about Bramblestar.
Spotfur, Snaptooth, and Flywhisker are happy that Spotfur's quarter-moon of silence is over, although Lionblaze has not returned yet.
She then recalls how she and Stemleaf had wanted to ask others about Bramblestar's actions.
She hesitantly asks them about Bramblestar's behavior, describing his anger and obsession with the code.
Her littermates are horrified at the prospect of standing up to their leader.
Snaptooth and Flywhisker urge her to be not rebel, and disagree that Bramblestar is breaking the code. Spotfur wonders why they will not listen to her, and they run off.
Spotfur and Stemleaf later find Thriftear, who is afraid. They explain their concerns, and although the she-cat agrees, she is also suspicious.
Spotfur then realizes that Bristlefrost is nearby, and thinks how the she-cat cannot be trusted nor hated.
Spotfur and Stemleaf are adamant that they will somehow change the situation.
Later, Spotfur ask Twigbranch and Finleap about Bramblestar's actions, and Twigbranch is miserable because she was named a codebreaker.
Although they find the list strange, Bramblestar is taking it seriously and also severely punishing even minor mistakes. Spotfur reflects on how he does not seem to care when it comes to those he exiles.
Spotfur says that ThunderClan is falling apart, and she and Stemleaf are banding cats together to form a plan.
Spotfur, Stemleaf, and the cats they invited to the secret meeting are gathered in a clearing.
They discuss Bramblestar’s actions and whether StarClan wants the codebreakers to be punished as much as they are.
The cats begin to argue, and Stemleaf states that they must depose Bramblestar before he does more.
They begin arguing if it is possible to get rid of Bramblestar, and Rootpaw suggests that the leader’s strange behavior may be caused by something during his death.
Spotfur is confused and horrified, and the others question if it may be Shadowsight. However, Cloverfoot says that Shadowsight would not be so evil.
Spotfur then catches sight of Bristlefrost, and they prepare to run. However, Bristlefrost declares that she wants to join them.
She desperately explains that she knows they want to depose Bramblestar, and she found out about the meeting through overhearing Spotfur and Stemleaf.
Rootpaw and Bristlefrost state that Squirrelflight already suspects that Bramblestar is an impostor; the pale she-cat suspects that the impostor lured Sparkpelt to be attacked.
The situation grows worse a moon later—Tigerstar is the only leader willing to fight, and Squirrelflight and many others are in hiding. Spotfur and Stemleaf wonder if killing Bramblestar is the only way.
Bristlefrost enters the camp, upset, Bramblestar after her. The leader states that Squirrelflight died, and begins to wail. She whispers to Spotfur that the deputy is still alive; faking her death was the only way to make Bramblestar stop searching.
The rebels meet again—Shadowsight was found badly injured, and cats suspect that it was Bramblestar’s doing.
Squirrelflight pleads to not kill Bramblestar.
Stemleaf lies that Squirrelflight is right, but tells Spotfur that she would never agree to lose the last of her mate, and they must independently form a plan.
They are ready a few days later, and although Spotfur is afraid, she knows it is the only way.
She and Stemleaf sleep in the same nest the night before they will attack.
Spotfur sits in the exiles' camp, recalling Stemleaf's death.
Tigerstar, Twigbranch, Spotfur, and Kitescratch discuss Bramblestar and who Bristlefrost is loyal to.
Squirrelflight says that she told Bristlefrost to defend Bramblestar.
Lionblaze and Jayfeather hiss that the attack made the situation worse, and Squirrelflight should not defend an impostor.
Later, Spotfur is numb with grief, and Squirrelflight sits next to her.
The deputy still does not want to attack the impostor, but commends her and the others for their courage.
Squirrelflight tells Spotfur to keep fighting, and they will one day take back ThunderClan.
Spotfur is doubtful, but then thinks that all she and Stemleaf had wanted was to be the best warriors they could, and whatever happens, the future of ThunderClan still matters and is worth protecting.
Spotfur echoes that they will one day take back ThunderClan.
