Chapter description

Squirrelflight asks what Bramblestar will tell the Gathering about them providing refuge for the Sisters. Bramblestar replies that he will say nothing, as he will let the others do the talking with nothing to say. Thornclaw asks what they should do if they are asked about the Sisters, and Bramblestar states that they should lie. Bristlepaw says that they should've sent the injured Sisters home already, but Alderheart responds. He says that Sunrise needs more time to heal. Bristlepaw suggests sending home the uninjured Sisters, and Squirrelflight bristles, stating that they want to stay with their campmate. Thornclaw asks why they should care about what the Sisters want, seeing as the big group of she-cats didn't care about what the Clans wanted when they held Squirrelflight captive. Alderheart states that Sunrise will go home in a few days, and that it's no big deal.

The cats settle down, and Bramblestar begins the Gathering. He is immediately cut off by Tigerstar, who states that they have an enemy at their border, and they should react. Squirrelflight asks about what enemy, and Tigerstar says that they held Squirrelflight and Leafstar hostage, and permanently wounded one of ShadowClan's warriors. Bramblestar asks what had happened. Tigerstar explains that the Sisters were on ShadowClan territory, and they shredded Strikestone's ear, causing him to lose his hearing. The Gathering erupts, calling the Sisters all kinds of bad names. Squirrelflight and Leafstar protest, but Tigerstar rebukes, and the rest of the cats agree with him. Squirrelflight asks Hawkwing why Tigerstar is causing trouble.

Hawkwing explains. Squirrelflight asks of his opinion, and he states that the Sisters will be gone in a moon, so there's no point in fighting. Bramblestar silences the Gathering, and states that the Sisters are retreating, and there is no point to fight a retreating enemy. Tigerstar rebukes about how the Sisters are strong enemies, but Bramblestar calls for the use of the Clans' mediator, Tree. Tree states that he prefers to stay out of this because of his relationship with his mother and the Sisters. Squirrelflight agrees, telling the cats that she and Leafstar had seen the tension between him and his mother, and they decide to use him as a last resort.

Bramblestar manages to convince Tigerstar and the other leaders to wait for a sign from StarClan, as the starry cats had been silent lately. On their way back, Bramblestar berates Squirrelflight for forcing her to lie, and they talk about the plan forward. The conversation ends with Bramblestar angrily ordering Squirrelflight to make Sunrise and her campmates leave tomorrow.
