Chapter description[]

Squirrelflight hunts with Leafpool, Twigbranch, Finleap, and Honeyfur, and the two sisters reminisce about their apprentice days. Leafpool manages to catch a sparrow, and the two share it. Leafpool asks if Squirrelflight has visited Sparkpelt recently, and the ThunderClan deputy worries about her daughter's disinterest in her two kits, Flamekit and Finchkit, though Leafpool insists that Sparkpelt just needs time. The conversation moves to Bramblestar, though Squirrelflight worries about asking her mate about having more kits, reflecting that they only spend time together playing with Flamekit and Finchkit. She is also concerned that Bramblestar blames her for the Clans' poor relationship with the Sisters. Twigbranch, Finleap, and Honeyfur return with their own prey, amused by Leafpool's catch before resuming their hunt. Squirrelflight confides with Leafpool that she's nervous about tonight's Gathering.
Tensions are already high by the time ThunderClan arrives at the island; Leafstar is puzzled by the hostility though Bramblestar mentions there has been border concerns. The Gathering begins, and Tigerstar announces how ThunderClan has given WindClan its territory back, prompting the other Clans to reshuffle their borders once again. He declares that the Sisters must be driven out from their camp to make room for SkyClan, though Bramblestar argues that keeping peace between the Clans cannot be achieved by declaring war against the Sisters. Leafstar asks why they cannot wait for the Sisters to leave, though Harestar and Mistystar argue against her. Leafstar reluctantly agrees that her Clan will move only after the Sisters are gone. Fueled by Bramblestar's lack of objection, Squirrelflight begins to speak up when Bramblestar silences her. The ThunderClan leader refuses to join in the war but acknowledges that ThunderClan will not stop Tigerstar. Leafstar suggests sending Tree to mediate along with herself and Squirrelflight, and the yellow tom reluctantly agrees in order to keep the peace. After the Gathering ends, Squirrelflight feels heartbroken when Bramblestar refuses to acknowledge her as they leave.
