Chapter description[]

After swimming in the darkness, Squirrelflight emerges in the ThunderClan camp. To her surprise, her Clanmates are unaware of her presence. In the nursery, Daisy plays with Flamekit and Finchkit while Sparkpelt sits vacantly in her nest. Squirrelflight attempts to rouse her daughter from her grief, but Sparkpelt is unable to hear her. In the medicine den, Jayfeather and Alderheart feel hopeless about Squirrelflight's and Leafpool's recovery. Hoping that Jayfeather might hear her, Squirrelflight apologizes for deceiving him when he was a kit, wanting to live to continue being his mother. His pelt smooths a bit, and Squirrelflight is hopeful that part of him heard her. Bramblestar laments not listening to Squirrelflight about the Sisters and forgetting how much he loved her. Alderheart excuses himself to get some fresh air, and Squirrelflight follows him outside of the camp. Realizing that nearby prey can sense her, Squirrelflight chases a squirrel in front of Alderheart as a sign of her coming home, though Alderheart doesn't seem to understand.
Wondering about what happened to the Sisters, Squirrelflight's spirit suddenly finds herself in the Sisters' old camp where Hawkwing organizes the building of their new camp. Near the cave where the landslide had occurred, Squirrelflight meets Blade, a fellow ghost who informs her that the Sisters were taken away by the Clan cats to their camp after the battle. She sudenly feels an abrupt pang, but ignores it. In SkyClan's camp, Squirrelflight finds Moonlight gravely wounded, and Fidgetflake and Frecklewish are concerned about infection. Fidgetflake mentions how Violetshine is currently nursing Moonlight's three kits in the meanwhile. While Fidgetflake cannot see Squirrelflight, he notes that he can smell ThunderClan. Tree arrives and asks if Moonlight needs prey, though he is shocked at the sight of Squirrelfight's ghost. Realizing that some can cat finally see her, Squirrelflight follows Tree outside of camp. The yellow tom apologizes for her death, though Squirrelflight reveals that she is currently walking in between life and death. He asks about Moonlight, who has been unconscious for days. Squirrelflight suddenly feels the pang again, and Tree notes she is fading. As she disappears, Squirrelflight asks Tree to tell Bramblestar that she loves him and he must continue to lead ThunderClan without her.
