- Squirrelpaw and Leafpaw venture out into the forest on their very first day as apprentices. Dustpelt explains to his eager apprentice that there is more to being a warrior than hunting and fighting, and that she must know every inch of their territory. Cinderpelt echoes Dustpelt's explanation to Leafpaw since she needs to know the location of various herbs. While Cinderpelt shows her apprentice some nettle leaves, Dustpelt shows Squirrelpaw some rabbit tracks. Before he can further explain, Brambleclaw bursts through the ferns. He gently teases Squirrelpaw and Leafpaw as tiny little kits learning to become big kits. Squirrelpaw insists they are proper apprentices now, and Brambleclaw humors her with an apology. Dustpelt chastises Brambleclaw for teasing them and takes him aside to discuss a prior border patrol.
- While the adults talk, Squirrelpaw hears a rabbit in the nearby undergrowth and chases after it despite Leafpaw's warnings. Dustpelt calls out a warning, and Leafpaw chases after her sister. In her haste, Leafpaw accidentally shoves Squirrelpaw over a ledge and the two sisters fall into the river. They grab onto a floating log and leap to the safety of a tree's roots. The drenched pair climb to the ground, but Squirrelpaw realizes they are lost. She attempts to scent the air for anything familiar and notices a Twoleg nest nearby. They realize they must be close to Sunningrocks and decide to follow the river home, but to stay under the shelter of the trees to avoid the hawks.
- As they walk, Squirrelpaw grumbles how she ruined their first day as apprentices and she will undoubtedly be punished. She worries how the rest of her Clanmates will laugh at her, especially Brambleclaw. Leafpaw adds that she will probably be punished too, but at least they will get through it together. As sundown approaches, they hear Dustpelt, Cinderpelt, and Brambleclaw calling for them. The Clanmates are reunited, and while Dustpelt praises their teamwork, he knows they will work well together picking ticks off the elders and cleaning nests. Brambleclaw apologies for teasing them earlier, and Squirrelpaw appreciates his apology. As they head home, Squirrelpaw realizes that she and her sister will walk different paths, but despite that, they will always have each other.
