Squirrelstar is a dark ginger[1] tabby[28] she-cat[1] with one white paw,[29] a squirrel-like, bushy tail,[12] and green eyes.[1]
Squirrelstar is the current leader of ThunderClan in the lake territories. She was born as Squirrelkit to Firestar and Sandstorm alongside Leafkit. As an apprentice, Squirrelpaw was mentored by Dustpelt. While her sister was calm and patient, Squirrelpaw was independent, stubborn, brave, and fiercely passionate, which often got her into trouble. She followed Brambleclaw on the journey to the sun-drown place, where the two grew close. When the Clans arrived at their new home by the lake, she was given her warrior name, Squirrelflight. She became mates with Brambleclaw, much to her close friend Ashfur's dismay. Unbeknownst to the rest of the Clan, Leafpool gave birth to Crowfeather's kits, and Squirrelflight protected her sister by raising the kits as her own. She and Brambleclaw raised Lionblaze, Jayfeather, and Hollyleaf; however, after the truth was revealed, Brambleclaw was furious about being lied to, and the two broke up. Squirrelflight also mentored Foxleap and Rosepetal.
After the battle against the Dark Forest, Brambleclaw became leader and appointed Squirrelflight as his deputy as a display of forgiveness. Following the Great Storm, Squirrelflight mentored Stormcloud, a former kittypet. She and Bramblestar eventually had kits of their own: Alderkit, Sparkkit, Juniperkit, and Dandelionkit, though only Alderheart and Sparkpelt survived to adulthood. Squirrelflight eventually came at odds with Bramblestar when she defended the Sisters from ThunderClan and was almost killed by a rockslide. StarClan allowed her body to heal, but Leafpool stayed in StarClan, and died. After Bramblestar's unexpected death, Squirrelflight took over his duties but she relinquished them when he was revived. When she discovered Bramblestar was being possessed, she was exiled by the false leader and took refuge in ShadowClan.
After deposing the impostor, Squirrelflight rejoined ThunderClan and became its acting leader, which drew conflict from the Clan as she did not have nine lives. She revealed Ashfur as the identity of the impostor, and struggled to keep her Clan together, advocating for the return of Bramblestar's spirit. However, she somberly accepted his permanent disappearance, but Ashfur kidnapped Squirrelflight through the Moonpool, bringing her to the Place of No Stars, where she learned that Ashfur planned to destroy the Clans in the name of his love for her. With the help of Rootspring and Shadowsight, Squirrelflight and Bramblestar returned to the living world, and Ashfur was eventually defeated. Squirrelflight continued to serve as Bramblestar's deputy until he decided to step down from leadership, rising as Squirrelstar with Ivypool as her deputy.

The New Prophecy
- "Yes, O Great One. I shall do exactly what you say. And when we come back empty-pawed, maybe you'll admit that I was right."
- ―Squirrelpaw to Brambleclaw Midnight, page 16
- After hearing Midnight's message, the six cats return home and she helps lead the Clans on the Great Journey to the lake territories. Firestar rewards her with her warrior name, Squirrelflight, for her courage and service to the Clans. While the Clans settle into their new territories, Brambleclaw becomes very close to his half-brother, Hawkfrost. Squirrelflight distrusts Hawkfrost and their relationship greatly, and after multiple arguments with Brambleclaw, they break up. She finds comfort in her friend, Ashfur, though she does not reciprocate the romantic feelings he has for her. When Brambleclaw saves Firestar from a fox trap set by Hawkfrost, she grows to trust Brambleclaw again, becoming mates shortly after.
Power of Three
- "Kill them, then. You won't hurt me that way. If you really want to hurt me, you'll have to find a better way than that. They are not my kits."
- ―Squirrelflight to Ashfur Long Shadows, page 276
Omen of the Stars
- "Brambleclaw, I'm sorry. You have to understand that I never intended to hurt you. I loved you, and was proud to raise these kits with you. You were a wonderful father. […] Don't throw away everything just because you are angry with me!"
- ―Squirrelflight to Brambleclaw The Last Hope, page 201
A Vision of Shadows
- "You know as well as I do, that a medicine-cat apprentice has to be just the right cat."
- ―Squirrelflight to Jayfeather The Apprentice's Quest, page 69
The Broken Code
- Squirrelflight: "I'm not going along with any of this."
- Ashfur: "Don't be mouse-brained. It will all be worth it when I control the forest and StarClan. We can be together, and I'll forgive you for betraying me to the Clans."
- The Place of No Stars, pages 178-179
- Squirrelflight takes over Bramblestar's duties as he falls ill, and when he dies, she is overcome with grief, refusing to take up leadership. When he is revived, she is overjoyed, returning to her position as deputy. She later becomes suspicious of the way her mate is acting towards the codebreakers. When Rootpaw and Bristlefrost tell her that Bramblestar is a ghost and ThunderClan's leader is an impostor, she tries to inform the other Clans, but her plot is discovered by the impostor, who exiles her. Squirrelflight goes to ShadowClan and informs Tigerstar, who allows her to stay in ShadowClan until the impostor is dealt with. She helps lead the exiled cats, and is heavily adamant about keeping the impostor alive until Bramblestar can be restored to his body. She also fakes her death to make the impostor stop looking for her.
- During the battle for ShadowClan, she leads the rebels into battle, and upon seeing her, the impostor is subdued and defeated by Tigerstar. Squirrelflight then becomes ThunderClan's acting leader, choosing Lionblaze as her deputy. At a Gathering, after contemplating the impostor's actions and personality, she realizes his true identity as Ashfur, coming back as vengeance for choosing Bramblestar over himself. Squirrelflight's authority is challenged by some of her Clanmates who question the nepotism present in the Clan's leadership lineage, and pressure her to give up on Bramblestar. After the Sisters discover the spirits of their fallen Clanmates in pain and agony with no sign of Bramblestar, the Clan leaders decide to murder Ashfur in Bramblestar's body. Rootspring and Bristlefrost comfort her as she accepts her mate's death, but while seeking comfort at the Moonpool, Ashfur escapes from ShadowClan's prison and kidnaps Squirrelflight through the Moonpool, entering the spirit realm.
- Lionblaze succeeds her as acting leader, though his leadership falls apart as the Clan falls into further turmoil, and Graystripe takes over instead. Ashfur attempts to convince Squirrelflight to be with him, and even has her mate's possessed spirit attack her when she refuses Ashfur's affections, but Squirrelflight remains firm in her choice of mate and further condemns Ashfur for all that he has done. Shadowsight distracts Ashfur for both Bramblestar and Squirrelflight to escape, and Rootspring and Snowtuft later help Bramblestar reunite with his body. Squirrelflight and Bramblestar escape the Dark Forest and return to the living world. She resumes her deputy duties, and requests Graystripe to deliver a message to Ashfur from her that she never loved him and will only love Bramblestar. After Ashfur's death, Squirrelflight mourns Graystripe's death and welcomes Bramblestar's return.
A Starless Clan
- "But ShadowClan didn't have Squirrelflight. She is an amazing warrior, brave and resourceful, and she loves her Clan; she will be a remarkable leader. She already led ThunderClan when I was trapped in the Dark Forest. Now she will keep ThunderClan safe and together."

- «Pride surged through him as he looked at the tiny scraps of fur. He had so many hopes for them: good hunting, happiness, perhaps even leadership of their Clan. Though he had been a kittypet, his daughters were Clanborn through and through. His blood would run through ThunderClan for many seasons to come, even when he no longer walked the forest.»
- —Firestar's thoughts about his newborn daughters Firestar's Quest, page 510
Squirrelflight and Bramblestar looking forward to their future family
- Bramblestar: "Squirrelflight…I just wanted to say…I wanted to thank you for everything. For supporting me over the badger battle. For welcoming the kittypets I brought back. For—for raising three wonderful cats that I'm so proud of."
- Squirrelflight: "We did it together."
- Bramblestar's Storm, page 465
- In Bramblestar's Storm, Squirrelflight and Bramblestar guide the Clan through the Great Storm. She gently reminds Bramblestar of his leadership duties, and he wonders how lost he would be without her. Squirrelflight is not too impressed when Bramblestar brings a few kittypets to ThunderClan to seek shelter from the flood and notices how close he and Jessy are getting. She supports Bramblestar's decision to help ShadowClan and Tawnypelt with badgers, noting how she would do anything for her sister. One of the kittypets, Frankie, becomes her apprentice. Meanwhile, Jessy helps Bramblestar realize the bond he and Squirrelflight share and the two reconcile their relationship. Moons later, she happily reveals to Bramblestar that she is expecting his kits.
- "Being a good deputy doesn't mean blindly following orders. It means standing up for what I believe, and this time, I believe I'm right."
- ―Squirrelflight's arguing with Bramblestar Squirrelflight's Hope, page 145
Squirrelpaw and Leafpaw
- In Squirrelflight's Hope, hoping to settle border disputes between the Clans, Squirrelflight and Leafstar travel outside Clan borders to find a suitable home for SkyClan. They discover the Sisters, a strange yet friendly group of she-cats, who plan to leave their territory once Moonlight's kits are weaned. Squirrelflight's strong desire to have another litter and her sense of justice for the Sisters drives a wedge between her and Bramblestar, who is trying to stabilize the fragile peace. She and Bramblestar find a brief serenity while nurturing for Sparkpelt's two kits after Larksong and Flickerkit pass away.
- When the other Clans decide to forcefully drive out the Sisters, Squirrelflight and Leafpool have a terrible dream forewarning them about Moonlight's kits. They help Moonlight deliver her kits, but the outnumbered Sisters fiercely defend their camp from the Clan warriors. While saving Moonlight's kits during a cave in, Squirrelflight and Leafpool are fatally injured and walk in StarClan. Determined to return to Bramblestar and Sparkpelt, Squirrelflight chooses to return to ThunderClan. She and Bramblestar reconcile, and the Clan mourns for Leafpool.
- "I chose you to be deputy because I was impressed with you: your leadership qualities, your motivation, your courage. But lately you haven't seemed like yourself, and to be honest, you haven't done a great job of supporting me through all this trouble with Splashtail."
- ―Squirrelstar seeing Ivypool off on her quest Ivypool's Heart, chapter 3
- When the Clans call an emergency Gathering, Squirrelstar leads Ivypool, Jayfeather, and Alderheart to the island. The leaders discuss Whistlepaw's vision, and Squirrelstar agrees to the proposed quest to discover the vision's meaning. She allows Ivypool to represent ThunderClan, and appoints Cinderheart as temporary deputy in Ivypool's stead. As Squirrelstar sees Ivypool off, she explains the reasoning why she chose Ivypool as her deputy, and hopes the quest will help Ivypool heal.

- "I will love these kits as if they were my own. I already do! I will never take them from the Clan, you will see them all the time, and they will know you are my kin so they will always be close to you. Remember what Feathertail said: These kits deserve parents who can be proud of them, who can raise them among their Clanmates as fine warriors. Brambleclaw and I can do that. And the secret of their birth will die with me, I promise."
