This page contains Squirrelstar's personality and relationships. It contains conjecture due to being based off of general novel themes, and all statements must be sourced.

Personality[]

"I know the warrior code is important. I never would have broken it if I hadn't felt I was doing the right thing. I hope the mistakes I've made, I've made out of love."
―Squirrelflight to the cats of StarClan Squirrelflight's Hope, page 350
Squirrelstar is feisty, passionate, scrappy, and expressive.[1]
Squirrelstar has a fiery spirit and has been compared to fire.[2] In her youth, she was very talkative, obnoxious, impulsive and enthusiastic, which often got her into trouble.[3] She can also be stubborn; once she decides to do something, she does it, and will not be dissuaded even by those closest to her.[4] Although she has matured and gained wisdom from experience, Squirrelstar has maintained her independent nature, and can still be stubborn, impulsive, stressful and somewhat harsh at times.[5][6] Despite this, she is very benevolent and good-hearted; as noted by Brambleclaw and Rock, she does everything for a good reason.[7] In fact, she is an extremely loyal, brave, compassionate, and generous cat; she is fiercely devoted and very caring to her Clan and her loved ones, especially her sister Leafpool and her mate Brambleclaw.[8] Squirrelstar is kind and merciful to any cat, regardless of where they're from.[9] This is shown by her defending and helping the Sisters despite not knowing them very well.[10]
Despite her love and respect for her Clan, her mate and her other loved ones, Squirrelstar is willing to challenge and even deceive them if she believes it to be the right choice. Although she is generally well-meaning, she can still be blunt with her opinions, often to the point of tactlessness, harshness, and occasional downright rudeness and hypocrisy,[11][12] which sometimes negatively affects her personal relationships[13][14]. The most notable example of Squirrelstar's willingness to risk the trust of her Clanmates and loved ones is the lie she told to the entire Clan, including Brambleclaw, that Leafpool's kits were hers and his by blood.[15] She did this to save Leafpool from losing place her place as medicine cat and possibly being exiled from the Clan, and to protect her kits from being punished for their mother's mistakes. However, it should be noted that Squirrelstar did this only reluctantly, and after much pushing on the parts of both Leafpool and StarClan themselves, as she knew it was a betrayal of her Clan and her mate's trust.[16][17] When the truth finally came out, Squirrelstar stood by her decision, insisting that she only did what she had to do. Nevertheless, she deeply regretted the pain she'd caused, and was especially devastated by the fact that her lie drove her and Brambleclaw apart.[18] Although they eventually reconciled, it is implied that Squirrelstar never fully forgave herself for hurting Brambleclaw so deeply.[19]

Relationships[]

Firestar and Sandstorm[]

This section needs expansion. You can help the Warriors Wiki by adding more info.

Squirrelstar loves her parents very much. Firestar was often worried about his daughter's feisty and independent attitude, but knows she's a great warrior.[20] Sandstorm was worried when her daughter went missing on the quest to find Midnight but was relieved when she returned.[21] Squirrelflight was heavily affected by her father's death[22] and she was momentarily reunited with her parents in StarClan when she was piled on by a rockslide with Leafpool.[23]

Leafpool[]

"She was loved. I loved her. Her final act was to save a litter of kits. They were kits of an outsider—a stranger to our land, and to our code. But Leafpool saw every life as important, and she died saving something she cherished most of all—kits. She told me to tell you that she always loved you as your mother and she always will. She only lied to protect you. She said that she'd never forgive herself for the pain she caused you, but I hope she finds peace in StarClan, because she deserves to be happy. Leafpool was the best littermate I could have had. I will miss her so much, but I know that she will always be with me, watching from StarClan."
―Squirrelflight at Leafpool's vigil Squirrelflight's Hope, chapter 28
Sandstorm

Squirrelkit and Leafkit with their mother, Sandstorm.

Despite being polar opposites in personality,[3] Squirrelflight and Leafpool are as close as can be. They even shared some sort of link where they knew each other’s feelings, though that link seems to have faded over time.[4] They obviously have a very strong bond, and Squirrelflight even agrees to take Leafpool’s kits and raise them, deceiving the entire Clan into believing that they are hers.[24][16]
When their lie is finally revealed, Squirrelflight and Leafpool support each other, and Squirrelflight tries to explain why she had to help her sister.[25] The two sisters keep each other company for many moons afterwards, while the most of the Clan shuns and distrusts them.[26] After finally being forgiven, Squirrelflight and Leafpool spend many moons as deputy and medicine cat of ThunderClan, and Leafpool supports Squirrelflight during the Clans' conflict with the Sisters.[10] However, the two sisters end up buried in a rockslide, and go to StarClan.[27] There, they are reunited with Hollyleaf and Firestar and Sandstorm, and Leafpool is happy. However, Squirrelflight wants to get back to her Clan. Squirrelflight survives in the end, and her spirit returns to her body, but Leafpool dies, and Squirrelflight mourns for her sister.[19]

Brambleclaw[]

Squirrelstar's and Brambleclaw's relationship has been very unstable over the years. As an apprentice, Squirrelpaw dislikes Brambleclaw, seeing him as an arrogant, bossy know-it-all, while Brambleclaw regards her as a quarrelsome nuisance.[3] They often bicker, and on one occasion almost to the point of violence when Squirrelpaw swipes her paw at Brambleclaw for accusing her not listening, although their fight is stopped by Firestar.[28] However, during their journey to and from the sun-drown-place, Squirrelpaw and Brambleclaw gradually grow closer and become friends.[29] They eventually develop affection for each other, and spend a lot of time together.[30]
However, when Brambleclaw starts to befriend his arrogant and ambitious half-brother, Hawkfrost, Squirrelflight gets angry with him. They get into multiple arguments, as Squirrelflight repeatedly urges Brambleclaw to see the ambition in Hawkfrost, but he doesn’t listen to her, which makes Squirrelflight even more angry and causes her to lash out at him.[13][31] She also distances herself from Brambleclaw and begins to grow closer to Ashfur.[32] After seeing Brambleclaw chatting with Hawkfrost several more times, including at a Gathering, Squirrelflight's anger and frustration with Brambleclaw increases, and she again warns him that Hawkfrost is untrustworthy, but he again refuses to listen. Disappointed that Brambleclaw doesn't agree with her and taking this as a sign that he cares more about Hawkfrost than her, Squirrelflight angrily, but sadly, ends her relationship with Brambleclaw, insisting that it won't work, despite Brambleclaw's protests.[11] Afterwards, Squirrelflight reflects several times on how she wants to trust Brambleclaw, but lost all trust in him when he befriended Hawkfrost, whom she firmly believes can never be trusted. Squirrelflight feels and asserts both to both Leafpool and Brambleclaw that she and Brambleclaw can never be together if he trusts Hawkfrost more than her.[33]
However, after Brambleclaw helps and comforts her during a search for Leafpool, Squirrelflight begins to wonder how much Brambleclaw really means to her, finding herself unable to answer the question if she would leave her Clan for him[34]. After a deadly battle with badgers, Squirrelflight and Brambleclaw reconcile and become mates,[35] with Squirrelflight explaining to Ashfur that she is better-suited for Brambleclaw. When Ashfur brings up Brambleclaw's heritage, Squirrelflight firmly retorts that she will judge Brambleclaw by his own actions, not his father's. Later, Squirrelflight and Brambleclaw talk through their problems concerning Hawkfrost, with Squirrelflight coming to understand that while Brambleclaw has kinship with him, he is still loyal to ThunderClan.[36]
When asked to pretend to be the mother of Leafpool's kits, Squirrelflight initially refuses because it would violate Brambleclaw's trust.[17] However, she is eventually convinced that it is the only option to protect Leafpool and her kits, and reluctantly agrees to deceive the entire Clan, including Brambleclaw, for the rest of her life.[16] For seasons afterwards, Squirrelflight and Brambleclaw raise the kits together and love them. Squirrelflight shows her love and respect for Brambleclaw several times, being one of the few cats to genuinely support him and happily cheer for him when he is allowed to remain deputy despite Graystripe's return[37], and fiercely defending Brambleclaw when Ashfur fails to speak up when the stressed Brambleclaw accidentally assigns him to two patrols at the time.[38]
However, when Squirrelflight’s deception is finally revealed, Brambleclaw feels deeply betrayed and breaks up with Squirrelflight, much to her distraught.[25] For moons afterward, they barely speak to each other, though Brambleclaw occasionally shuts Squirrelflight down when she speaks out in public, much to her shock and sadness.[39][26] Squirrelflight deeply regrets breaking Brambleclaw's trust and hurting his feelings, and misses her former mate dearly.[18] However, Squirrelflight makes no attempts to reconcile with Brambleclaw, partly because she believes he will never forgive her,[40] and partly because she feels that she deserves his anger as her punishment for all the pain she's caused.[41]
However, Bramblestar eventually grows to understand that Squirrelflight does everything for the best of reasons, and he lets her back into his life as his deputy.[22] Squirrelflight accepts his offer, and the two eventually become mates again, and have their own kits together.[42] For many moons, they are very happy together, and hardly ever argue. However, their relationship becomes strained yet again when Squirrelflight expresses her desire to have more kits and makes a major suggestion to the other Clans without speaking to Bramblestar about it first, inadvertently upsetting him. Squirrelflight is disappointed that Bramblestar doesn't want kits as much as she does. She stressfully wonders if Bramblestar will have a second family after her death and even questions if he loves her anymore.[43] Tensions between them increase when Squirrelflight defends and seems to favor the Sisters over ThunderClan, and continually goes behind Bramblestar's back and undermines his authority, stressing him out as he tries to keep the relations between the Clans peaceful.[44] However, they make up after Squirrelflight almost dies in a rockslide.[8]
When Bramblestar suddenly dies, Squirrelflight is so overcome with grief that she refuses to take up leadership, but is overjoyed when he revives.[45] She initially convinces herself that the reason he's acting oddly is just a result of the trauma of losing a life and does her best to comfort him, but gradually becomes suspicious. When Rootpaw tells her that the real Bramblestar is trapped as a ghost, Squirrelflight believes him, and agrees to help ShadowClan reveal the impostor’s true identity and restore Bramblestar to leadership.[46]
Squirrelflight's determination to get Bramblestar back clashes with her duty to keep ThunderClan safe.[47] She is desperate to see him again and continually tries to convince the Clans not to kill his body, even though Ashfur is using it to cause trouble for them. When the Clans decide to kill him, Squirrelflight is distraught and seriously considers helping Ashfur escape so as to save Bramblestar's body. As noted by Rootspring, this proves that Squirrelflight is willing to give up everything for Bramblestar's sake. In the end, it is only Bristlefrost and Rootspring's argument that Bramblestar would have put his Clan first that convinces Squirrelflight to very reluctantly let go of him.[48] Squirrelflight is devastated when she believes that the Clans have killed Bramblestar's body, but then briefly relieved when she finds that Ashfur, still inhabiting it, has escaped. When Ashfur confronts her, begging her to be his mate, Squirrelflight once again affirms her love for Bramblestar, insisting that he was always the right mate for her, and thus refuses to be with the cat who caused his death.[49]

Lionblaze, Jayfeather, and Hollyleaf[]

This section needs expansion. You can help the Warriors Wiki by adding more info.

"I will love these kits as if they were my own. I already do! I will never take them from the Clan, you will see them all the time, and they will know you are my kin so they will always be close to you. Remember what Feathertail said: These kits deserve parents who can be proud of them, who can raise them among their Clanmates as fine warriors. Brambleclaw and I can do that. And the secret of their birth will die with me, I promise."
―Squirrelflight to Leafpool Leafpool's Wish, chapter 9
Squirrelstar raises these three as if they were her own kits, and truly loves them. When she reveals the truth about their parents to them, they feel betrayed and ignore her. She is dismayed, and tries to reconnect with her kits, but they reject her. However, eventually, all the cats involved with the secret come to terms with the past, and mostly forgive each other.[50]

Sparkpelt, Alderheart, Dandelionkit, and Juniperkit[]

This section needs expansion. You can help the Warriors Wiki by adding more info.

Squirrelstar loves all her kits. She is proud of Sparkpelt and Alderheart for what they have accomplished, and mourns for her two kits that died, Juniperkit and Dandelionkit.[51] She sees them in StarClan when she goes there temporarily, and briefly gets to spend time with them before she goes back to ThunderClan. She is sad to leave them, but knows that she’ll be with them again someday.[52]

Dustpelt[]

Sandstorm: "What didn’t she do? Slipping out of camp to hunt on her own...getting stuck in bushes, falling into streams...I remember Dustpelt saying to me once, ‘If that kit of yours doesn’t shape up, I’m going to claw her pelt off and hang it on a bush to frighten the foxes!"
Sparkpaw: "He wouldn’t have."
Sandstorm: "No, of course not. But Dustpelt had to be tough with her. He saw how much she had to offer her Clan, but he knew she wouldn’t live up to her potential unless she learned discipline."
—Sandstorm reflecting about Dustpelt The Apprentice's Quest, page 16
Dustpelt is Squirrelpaw's mentor, picked specially by Firestar to try and counter Squirrelflight's feisty personality.[42] While Dustpelt is often strict with her, he saw her potential and wanted her to succeed, though this did not stop Squirrelpaw from continually testing her mentor's patience.[source?] When Squirrelpaw helps lead the Clan to their new home in the quarry, Dustpelt sought out Firestar and recommends to him about making her a warrior and is incredibly proud when she becomes one.[53]

Ashfur[]

"I know you think I've never forgiven Brambleclaw for stealing you from me, but you're wrong, and so is every cat that thinks so. My quarrel is with you, Squirrelflight. It always has been."
―Ashfur's confrontation with Squirrelflight Long Shadows, page 273
Squirrelpaw and Ashfur were average Clanmates, up until she went traveling to the sun-drown-place. In that time, Ashfur worried for her, being one of the few cats to greet her warmly when she returned.[54] After moving to the lake territories, the two developed a supportive and playful friendship.[55] [56] However, Ashfur wanted to spend an increasing amount of time with Squirrelflight, usually being the first to approach, even while her focus was elsewhere.[57][58]
Ashfur became overprotective of Squirrelflight. He fought her battles for her and defended her against their Clanmates, specifically Brambleclaw, much to the frustration of the independent she-cat[59][60] as she needed her closest companion to match her feisty personality, not contain it.[source?] As Ashfur's romantic feelings became clear, Squirrelflight briefly questioned her own feelings but ultimately wanted to remain friends.[61]
Although Squirrelflight explained this as kindly as she could, Ashfur wouldn't accept her answer. He repeatedly stated he loved her and even attempted to guilt-trip her by bringing up Bramblestar's heritage. However, he soon began ignoring her entirely, even with simple greetings, leaving Squirrelflight guilt-ridden.[62] Her guilt turned to anger when Ashfur accused her sister Leafpool of lying about her vision of Bramblestar's deputyship, which provokes Squirrelflight to almost attacking him.[63] Seasons on, Squirrelflight and Ashfur seemingly learn to tolerate one another, despite occasional moments of tension.[64]
However, Ashfur later reveals his hidden vendetta went to the extreme, confessing to the four attempted murders of Squirrelflight's family members and swearing to humiliate her at the Gathering. This was all in an attempt to make her feel the same pain he felt at her rejection.[65] When Squirrelflight begs him not to expose the secret, Ashfur doesn’t care to listen, intending to get her exiled.[66]
After Ashfur’s murder, Squirrelflight is unsettled by both his death and the praise he received from his Clanmates, unknowing of his crimes.[67] When she temporarily went to StarClan, Squirrelflight was confused and uncomfortable to discover Ashfur was there, questioning why he didn’t end up in the Dark Forest. She reluctantly dismissed it when Hollyleaf explained he'd apologized to StarClan. The former friends turned enemies awkwardly didn't say a word to each other, and Squirrelflight wasn't sure if she could ever forgive Ashfur.[27]
Ashfur comes back to the Clans in the form of Bramblestar, wanting Squirrelflight to become his mate. After Squirrelflight refuses, he drags her against her will through the Moonpool and into the Place of No Stars.[49] Now trapped with Ashfur, Squirrelflight continues to harshly reject him, refusing to take the blame for all the things he's done when he tries to guilt-trip her. Even when he mind-controls Bramblestar's spirit into attacking her, Squirrelflight refuses to submit to Ashfur. She is eventually able to escape Ashfur.[68]

Hawkfrost[]

Squirrelflight has never liked or trusted Hawkfrost, especially after it was revealed that he was the son of Tigerstar. As an apprentice, she does briefly feel sympathetic that he never got the chance to know his father, but Squirrelpaw quickly pushes the feeling aside, as there's something about Hawkfrost she doesn't trust.[69]. She dislikes the RiverClan tom's arrogance, ambition, and tendency to challenge his deputy Mistyfoot, seeing them as signs of untrustworthiness[13][70] and refuses to even entertain the idea that he could be friendly or trustworthy[30]. Her mistrust eventually becomes a source of conflict between her and Brambleclaw when the latter befriends Hawkfrost despite Squirrelpaw's misgivings of him.[13] Ultimately, Squirrelflight's distrust of Hawkfrost is proven to be right when he tries to murder Firestar for power.[71]

Nightheart, Finchlight, and Flickerkit[]

«Squirrelflight nuzzled the kits harder, purring, as longing hollowed her belly. If Sparkpelt didn't want these kits, she would take care of them as if they were her own.»
—Squirrelflight as she interacts with her grandchildren Squirrelflight's Hope, page 260
Squirrelstar loves her grandchildren very much, and when Flickerkit and the kits' father, Larksong, passed, she helped take care of them while Sparkpelt grieved, which helped her end her desire for another litter.[72] Squirrelflight believed Flamepaw and Finchpaw would be great warriors when they grew older.[73] When Squirrelflight was on the verge of death, she thought of Flamepaw and Finchpaw, and how she would miss them if she stayed in StarClan.[74]

Moonlight[]

When Squirrelflight and Moonlight first meet, the latter is hostile towards Squirrelflight because she and Leafstar trespassed on the Sisters' territory. She even decides to keep them prisoner in order to prevent them from bringing their Clanmates to the territory, despite their promise not to do so until the Sisters leave.[75] However, Moonlight and Squirrelflight quickly warm up to each other, sympathizing over their different lifestyles and becoming somewhat friends.[76][77] Squirrelflight considers Moonlight to be a reasonable cat, and feels pity for her because she is pregnant. However, she is shocked when Moonlight stubbornly refuses to leave the Sisters' territory in order to avoid a battle with the Clans, even though it puts her kits in danger. After Squirrelflight and Leafpool save her kits from a cave-in, Moonlight, now a ghost, asks Snow to thank Squirrelflight for her efforts.[78] Moons later, Moonlight encourages the Sisters to go to help the Clans, part of the reason being that Leafpool and Squirrelflight had supported the Sisters.[79]
