"…Did you ever see animals like the ones in that Twoleg den? Did you know that you could reach another afterlife by passing through a hollow tree? […] Then you can see that the world is bigger than you know. […] And so is the afterlife. You're despairing over the loss of Bristlefrost based on what the Clans know. But the Clans don't know everything. It only took this one journey into the mountains to convince you of that."
— Stalk Purr to Ivypool about Bristlefrost in Ivypool's Heart, page 263

Stalk Purr is a tabby wildcat she-cat.[6]

Ivypool's Heart[]

"Now I understand why you Clan cats urged us to escape from the Twolegs in that vile den. I can't imagine how I would have felt if the Twolegs had taken these kits away from me. I'm so grateful to you for making sure that I didn't have to find out."
―Stalk Purr to the Clan cats Ivypool's Heart, page 290
Stalk Purr is a wildcat under Twoleg captivity with her mate, Tumble Leap. She is pregnant and close to kitting; she tells the questing cats it is her third litter, but none of her previous two survived. The two wildcats were once part of a larger group, but Twolegs destroyed their home, and the others left them behind to search for a new territory. When Whistlepaw draws StormClan's symbol, she and Tumble Leap are startled and reveal that their group originated from StormClan. Whistlepaw describes her vision of the Star Tree and asks about its location, but the wildcats sadly reply that they no longer know where it is. However, she recalls that the tree stands alone in a clearing with waterfalls and a stream leading up to it. Stalk Purr also mentions that only the elders could receive guidance from the ancestors, which may be a reason for the decline of their kind. Ivypool urges the wildcats to join them on the Clan cats' quest, but they reply that their Twoleg is terrible but still provides basic necessities—something her future kits will need. The warrior reminds them that the Twoleg may take her kits away, but just then, the Twoleg comes for feeding time. Tumble Leap whispers for the cats to hide.
After the cats leave, they follow Stalk Purr's descriptions and find the Star Tree. In the land of the ancestors, Galestar urges them to free the wildcats and reunite them with their kin over the mountains because their kind once helped her. She also reveals that their kits will be named Pounce, Stretch, and Hunt and will be taken by the Twolegs. The questing cats return to the wildcats. They are initially incredulous, but soon believe it when they hear the names of their future kits. The two wildcats agree to join Ivypool and the others at the thought of living in a Clan with their kits again.
Two sunrises later, they prepare to escape with Stalk Purr and Tumble Leap. As the Twoleg arrives to feed the animals, the wildcats attack him while the Clan cats chase his dog as a distraction. As they run out of the den, Stalk Purr and Tumble Leap are unsure if they can jump over the wall, but they do so effortlessly. They identify freshwater, and Stalk Purr explains that wildcats believe the elements each have spirits that will come to their aid when needed. Rootspring replies that he greatly respects them. They settle to hunt; Stalk Purr kills a gull by the sun-drown-water, impressing the Clan cats. Before they eat, she states they must bow their heads to thank the spirits for the prey. They then reflect on meeting Galestar and how fortunate it was for the Clan cats and the wildcats to be united.
A few days later, they arrive at a crest overlooking a forest. Ivypool notices Stalk Purr's worry, and she responds that she is conflicted over whether she has made the right choice for the livelihoods of her kits. Thinking about Bristlefrost, the Clan cat says that it is just part of being a parent, and Stalk Purr states that above all, her kits will be free. Ivypool mentions that she has also lost a kit before and confesses that she feels trapped in her grief. Stalk Purr says that she is comforted that her kits are not truly gone even if they cannot be seen. Ivypool sadly explains that Bristlefrost's spirit died in the Dark Forest, but Stalk Purr points out many things that Ivypool discovered on the journey. The wildcat states that the world—and the afterlife—are vaster than she knows, and Bristlefrost may be gone according to the Clans, but the Clans do not know everything. Ivypool gasps as she realizes the truth in Stalk Purr's words. She looks upon the landscape, reflecting that perhaps she will find Bristlefrost in unexpected ways, as her daughter's spirit can now take on any form. She thanks Stalk Purr, and they proceed to a Thunderpath.
At the Thunderpath, Rootspring orders the cats to stay back. A monster roars by, and Rootspring explains that he can see the ghosts of those who died on the Thunderpath, and they warned him not to cross. A ghost leads them to a safer location, and they cross there. However, a group of Twolegs find them, and the cats flee toward a river. Just then, Stalk Purr's kits begin to come. They find a more sheltered place for the queen, and Ivypool, Dovewing, and Icewing fetch ferns, moss, water, and a stick while Tumble Leap stays with his mate. Hunt and Stretch are born that evening. However, her third kit is motionless, and Stalk Purr wails in dismay, but Whistlepaw then gently swings the kit by the base of its tail. Pounce squeaks, and the wildcats celebrate their newborn litter.
The next day, Stalk Purr and Tumble Leap proudly watch their kits. Stalk Purr thanks the Clan cats for freeing them, and the two wildcats also explain that their kits will receive the second half of their names from their ancestors. Ivypool and Icewing depart to find the wildcat group. When the elders agree to welcome the new family, Ivypool, Icewing, and a few wildcats return to where the other cats are. Prowl Sleek introduces herself and those with her to Stalk Purr and Tumble Leap. They enter the ancestors' land, and Prowl Sleek informs the spirits of the new family joining them. Stalk Purr's kits receive their ancestor guides and full names, and Purr Roll and Leap Growl then step up. The spirits explain that they are Stalk Purr's and Tumble Leap's guides; the four cats are glad to be reunited. As the spirits fade, Stalk Purr thanks the Clan cats for leading them to a true home. She departs with the other wildcats and bids farewell to the Clan cats.

Quotes[]

"We told you, our Clan doesn't really exist anymore. I don't think you'll be able to find more of us. Our numbers have been dwindling for many, many moons. Tumble Leap and I can remember friends and kin of ours who left on their own quest, to find help, but they never returned. In the end, things got so desperate that lots of cats went off in different directions. For all we know, Tumble Leap and I are the last two wildcats left."
―Stalk Purr about the wildcats Ivypool's Heart, page 195

"We were raised to believe that we're deeply connected to the elements—earth, water, and air—and that each element has spirits: spirits of our ancestors. As long as you honor those spirits, the elements will present themselves to you when you need them, or the spirits will protect you from them."
―Stalk Purr to the Clan cats about wildcat beliefs Ivypool's Heart, page 251

Stalk Purr: "We can cope, but you're right that we're worried. As I said before, this isn't the first time I've been carrying kits. I've lost two litters before this. Back then, I felt that taking the Twoleg's food was my best chance of birthing healthy kits, but I was wrong. And now you said that Galestar told you the Twoleg would have taken these kits away if they did survive...I just feel so guilty. What if I made the wrong choice for these kits? Or what if I made the wrong choice before, and doomed my previous litters?"
Ivypool: "It's hard to know if you're doing the right thing for your kits. That will always be true. Unfortunately, it's just part of being a parent."
Stalk Purr: "That's true. And I have to remember: Out here I don't have a regular food supply, but at least I am free. If my kits are born healthy, no one can take them away from me. They'll be free, too. that's so important."
